R. Bryne, at Kapuskasing. John Paul Gaudreau, of Opazatika was inâ€" stantly killed by a car driven by Clerâ€" mont Roy, of the same place, and E. C. Walker of Troquois Falls, with Forâ€" tunat Cyrenne and George Comfort, went to Kapuskasing hospital, when Walker‘s car piled into a grader driven by Comfort. Roy later was arrested on instrucâ€" tions from Magistrate Tucker and reâ€" leased on $2,000 cash bail. According to the officer‘s report, the Roy car was said by eyeâ€"witnesses to have been travelling at a high rate of speed when it struck the little boy as he crossed the road, and the child‘s body was earried 54 feet six inches. Roy is said to have swerved his car in an effort to avoid striking the boy, but caught him while traveling on the driver‘s left hand side of the road. Opazatika is a few miles west of Kapuskasing. In the other accident, which hapâ€" pened a few hours before, Walker and Cyrenne were in a car driven by the former, while the grader, in a hollow of the road, was travelling slowly west in Fauquier township, east of Kapusâ€" kasing. Anocther automobile had passâ€" ed the grader and had met Walker on the top of a hill, but the dust from this car and from the grader below blindâ€" ed Walker‘s vision, the report states, and his car piled into the government road machine. Walker sustained fracâ€" tured ribs and cuts on the face and head, Cyrenne had face cuts and bruises and a neck artery cut, while WITH REX LEASE, TOM MOORE, LUCILLE BROWNE Electric thrills in a stirring melodrama of the men who ride the rails. Committee to be Set up to select Applicants for Farms. ha ment ly hay Ifi. .A severa Still ancther thought arises in conâ€" nection with this plan. In every town of the North there are large numbers of unemployed, many of them foreignâ€" ets who came here to go on the farm. These foreigners often howl that they were ‘"invited to Canada," but only very little investigation shows that they were here for years under false pretences. They came here to work on farms but if they went at all to farm work titey soon quit it for work in the mines or running stores or crowded into the mining areas of the North and thus created an unemployâ€" ment situation that would not normalâ€" ly have arisen. In working out the plan now put forward by the Government, there are several things that are worthy of conâ€" sideration. For instance, it is regretâ€" table that the limit has been placed at 1000. According to suggestions from udbury and North Bay there is reaâ€" on to think that the full quota of 1000 night be filled from those two cities ind adjacent towns, leaving nothing for the rest of the North. Another thought that is sure to obtrude itself on those who know the situation is the hard place already occupied by setâ€" tlers already on the land. The quesâ€" tion naturally arises:â€"‘If new men are to be assisted in establishing themâ€" selves on the farm, will help be given those in dire need who have for years been trying to establish themselves on homesteads in this North?" mously came to the would be absolutely care of the distres ment by direct rel however, that son done by way of givi it is casy to see that they had no inâ€" vitation at all along the lines Cthey adopted. Their competition has had much to do with creating the present sconditions and now, in many cases after sending their money overseas for years to foreign lands, they are deâ€" manding that the country keep them:. How would it be to weed out these gentlemen at this time? Why not deâ€" port all those who are determined ncet to be decent citizens of the country? Then ask the other (practically all of them accustomed to farm®labour} to go on the land as they pretended to deâ€" sire to do when they came to this counâ€" try? Those who refuse> might be either deported or jailed. There is not any doubt but that a lot of these felâ€" lows are capitalizing their present unemployment and are attempting to sponge on the people of Canada. A year or two more and they will be so expert it will not be possible for them to return to fair work under fair comâ€" ditions. ment dy direct relle!. it Was however, that something might done by way of giving experienced 1 mers an opportunity to return to land with a moderate amount of h "Although final details of the agt ment have not been worked out tler comes To return to the aancouncement made last week by Premier Henry, it may be said that the statement as issued by the prime minister is as follows:â€"â€" Result of Negotiations. "For some time negotiations have been taking place between the Dominâ€" ion and the Provincial Governments in reference to a land settlement scheme. Large sums of money have been spent in construction work by the Dominion Government and the Proâ€" vincial Government individually during the past two years, and both governâ€" ments have very generously assisted municipalities in municipal undertakâ€" ings, All this was intended to relieve unempoyment by providing work. This effort has been fairly successful, and, if the depression had only lasted for one or two years, it might have been â€" sufficient, but unfortunately there is everyv‘evidence that the period been â€" sullicient, there is every‘evide of depression will least next winter, a: ernments nor the the means to cart same scale. If theâ€" municipalities contribute an equal amount, there will be available about enough to take care of oneâ€"thousand families in the province of Ontario. "‘The amount to be advanced canâ€" not be used for the purchase or rental of land, but it is hoped that it will make a sufficient amount available to. start some experienced people on the land. "The personal selection of families for this scheme is regarded as being most essential. Experience in land setâ€" tlement schemes has shown that only those with farming exprerience and suitable physique are likely to succeed. For this reason the agreement provides thiat a selection committee must be set up whose duty will be to consider apâ€" plications from municipalitiee and to daécide whether persons recommended by the municipalities are suitable and the amount of the grant that will be available for the purpose. "It will be seen that the first step must be made by intending settlers applying to their municipalities, and if the municipalitiese are willing to help to a limited amount, an equal amount may be available from the Dominion and the province if the parties are the odd accident as follow:sâ€""Rather an unusual accident occurred on the Elk Lake highway in Dymond Townâ€" ship when. E. Bouchard was hit by fyâ€" ing stones and knocked unconscious. Bouchard, with a companion, were driving with a horse and open riec and met a car travelling at fast clip on a recently constructed curve at Chesâ€" ters Corners on which workmen were putting the completing gravel surface. One of a shower of stones shooting from under the tires of the passing car caught the unfortunate man about the temple inflicting a gash along the heac of considerable length and rendering him unconscious. He was rushed to the Red Cross hospital, New Liskeard, in one of the workmen‘s cars, where he is still a patient. The driver of the car doing the damage is unknown and proceeded on his way apparently unâ€" aware of any accident." UNO PARK FARMER SUFFERS ODD ACCIDENT ON HIGHWAY E.
