A move is on foot in Canada and United States to have no open season for ducks this fall, or at most, only a very few weeks. Officials from Washington have been in Ottawa talking the situation over with the representatives of the Parks Branch of the Department of Interior, and have returned to advise President Hoover. Dr. Harrison F. Lewis, Chief Migratory Bird Officer for Ontario and Quebec, has received instructions from Hon. Thomas Murphy, Minister of Inâ€" terior, to interview the chief game offi« clais of the Provinces of Eastern Canâ€" ada, to explain the critical situation to them and decide how far Canada will be prepared to go in the maiter when discussions with Washington are reâ€" newed. The drought in Saskatchewan, and | to a less degree in the other Prairie Provinces, is responsible for the situaâ€" tion. Wild ducks are happily unconâ€" cerned with laws of citizenship and imâ€" migration. Most of them on this conâ€" tinent are born in Canada and die in the United States. This summer calamity befell the Prairie ducks. They arrived in their accustomed breeding grounds to find their favourite waterâ€" courses dried up. Many of the birds died, and many others, they survived, reared no broom of ducklings, according to reports coming in to the department. Accordingly, aâ€" comparatively few Prairie ducks will return south this autumn. The black ducks which breed in Eastern Canada have had a fairly gsood year, and will go south in about normal numbers, but it is feared that if the thousands of hunters concenâ€" trate on the black ducks they will be very nearly exterminated as well. 86 it is proposed to cut the open season this year to the minimum, or wipe it out altogether for this year.
