The late Mr. Lonsdale had been in Timmins sincte last September. Death was due to heart faiiure. (The late Mr. Lonsdale was 55 years of age. The funâ€" eral took place on Sunday with Maâ€" sonic honours, <the late ‘Mr. Lonsdale being an valued member of the Order. system has met with enthusiasm and interest from coast to coast. In every city visited the newspapers have devotâ€" ed columns of space to accounts of his lectures and explanations cof his sysâ€" tem. The Vancouver, British Columbia, Star had an interview with Mr. Culâ€" bertson in which he paid tribute to British bridge players. He also noted that Canada was showing spy:cial inâ€" terest in bridge. "Incidentally," he said, "the hardest bridge problem ever published was solved by a Canadian, Dr. Roberts, of a small Ontario towh." Discussing Canadiar bridge, Mr. Culâ€" bertson voiced the opinion that Canaâ€" dian representatives will participate in the next championship in the United States." HIRAM LONSDALE PASSES AWAY AT TIMMINS JUNE 12 It is interesting to note that Dr. E. L, Roberts, of Timmins, who has won prizes and distinction at bridge, uses and endorses the Culbertson system. To The Advance Dr. Roberts said he believed its general adoption would greatly increase the interest and popuâ€" larity of bridge. HARPEST BRIDNGE PR’)BLKM o * BY A CANADIAN At the present tims bridge experts seem to be geénerally agreed that stanâ€" dardization of* ccn:ract bidding is grea‘ly to be desired. In The Bridge World, the resognized world authority on bridge, there was a recent editorial in which it is stated that "for many months there have been evidences that the movement for standardization on the basis of the Culbertson (approachâ€" forcing) system was gaining tremendâ€" ous headway." Reference is made also to the fact that standardization has been adopted by leading players and teackers of bridge. "This naticnal, and in fact, worldâ€"wide standardization has come not through the authorities but in spite of them. It is a development that has been forced by the contract players of the United States, of Canada, of Great Britain and of the world. Once they have understood the simpliâ€" city and accuracy ¢of the Cuilbertson Standard system, their acceptance of its principles as a guide to contract bidding has been well nigh universal."
