News of a very sad occurrence comes from Cochrane. According to this news Mrs. John Rae, living in the township of Clute, about eight miles from Cochâ€" rane, was found by her husband some nights ago hanging in the barn. On the evening in question Mrs. Rae had visited her sister who lived not far away. On her return she went to bed as usua@l. Later in the night she got up to attend to her threeâ€"monthsâ€" old baby and when she did not return to SETTLER‘S WIFE HANGS SELF IN BARN NEAR COCHRANE bed her husband became anxious As his wife had not been in the best of health He got up to look for her and not being able to find her in the house he went to the house of a neighbour not far away and enquired there for her. These neighbours hod not seen anything of Mrs. Rae and so the search for her was carried on. Eventually the barm was searched and the husband found the unfertunate woman hanging dead. The body was still warm but all efforts to revive life were unavailing. VICTORIA EVERGREEN PLAYGROUND A Christmas Cheer fund was started recently by the Cobalt Kiwanis Club with the purpose of giving Christmeas hampers to deserving people who hapâ€" pened to be in hard luck this Christâ€" mas. After the fund was open for a week or so, the committee of the club having the collection of the fund in charge reported that only one single dollar had been subscribed. It is hoped, however, that with Christmas drawing nearer every day the Christâ€" mas spirit will become more evident and the donations will come in all right. Mrs. Rae was about 31 years cof age, and survived by one child about three months old and ancther fifteen months Mrs. Rae had acted somewhat oddly about a year previously for a time, but had seemed to recover her health in the meantime wuntil some days before the tregedy when she appeared to be depressed and melancholy. C. G. Williams, a wellâ€"known mining engineer, formerly supintendent of the Hollinger Mine, gave evidence in the case as to the value of the ore. Questioned as to what he int'ended doing with the ore, Viggliotti stated he intended, if possible, to take it across the line and sell it to the United States mint. A letter signed by Viggliotti found in the grip was given in evidence and read in part: "We must watch ourseives while this stuff is in Toronto without compromising ourselves with anyone." There were five packages of ore found in Viggliotti‘s bag weighing 183 ounces valued at between $14 and $15 an ounce or total value of approximately $2,â€" 700. Viggliotti said he paid $1,931 in cash for the ore as the seller would not take a cheque. According to despatches from Toronâ€" to on Tuesday, Joseph M. Viggliotti, Detroit banker, and Joseph Bruno, Toâ€" ronto jeweller were convicted on a charge of illegal fossession of highâ€" grade ore Monday at Toronto, and reâ€" manded in custody till December 19 for sentence. Viggliotti, testifying in his own deâ€" fence, stated that he purchased the gold ore found in his cwn bossession from a government official in South Porcupine, Ont., stating he thought the official had a legal right to sell it. Judge John Boyne, of the Recorder‘s Court, Detroit, and Judge Marshner, of Wayne County Circuit Court, gave character evidence on behalf of Vigâ€" gliotti. 44640090040 Banker and Jeweller Found Guilty of Mlegally Having Highâ€"Grade Ore.
