Expech Service Will be in Force Inside of Five Years from Now. Present indications are that Hailey-j bury will be a port of call on a coast to coast air service planned for the Dominion for mail service. At present there is a mail service by air maintain- ed between Moncton, N.B., and Mon- treal. There is also one from Montreal to Ottawa. Also there are services by air between Montreal and Toronto. Hamilton, Windsor and Detroit. Next year a survey is to be made to establish ALL A _.-- an air mail service between Ottawa and Winnipeg, and Haileybury is ex-‘ peoted to be on this route. In speak- ing of the proposed new air mail lines, The Haileyburian last week said:â€" “Some interesting information in re- gard to the plans being formulated by the Post omce Department and the Department of National Defence was given to The Haileyburlan last week by Col. G. B. Holmes, head of the aerial branch of the latter department. who was in town in connection with the proposed improvement to the harbour here with a view to making it a suit- :zbie airport. “Colonel Holmes, with Mr. J. A. Ver~ nettc, of the Department of Public Works. took some soundings in the harbour and gathered other informa- tion, which is being embodied in a re- port to the government. The project had been placed before both depart- ments at Ottawa by a deputation of local men who were introduced by Hon. W. A. Gordon. “In regard to the plans for the airi mail service, Colonel Holmes stated that eventually there would be a service from coast to coast. He looked for . this to be completed and in operation! in ï¬ve years’ time. Next year a survey will be made of a link between Ottawa and Winnipeg and it is thought probâ€" able that the route to be chosen will be up the Ottawa Valley to a suitable point and thence on to the west. With this idea in mind Colonel Holmes, under whose direction this survey will be made, took measurements of a proposed landing ï¬eld at Farr’s Park, to the ! west of the town, and stated that that location would be an ideal one for an air mail station. There was plenty of room and the fact that it is handy to the railway and not too far from the post ofï¬ce made it just about what is required. he said. “Colonel Holmes said that at present an air mail service is being operated between Moncton, N.B., and Montreal and ‘from the latter city to Ottawa: also between Montreal, Toronto, Ham- ilton, Windsor and Detroit. A portion of this latter route, from Hamilton to Windsor, is lighted for night flying. There is also a regular service over a lighted route from Winnipeg west, with stopping places at Regina, Moose Jaw, Lethbridge and Edmonton, and a sur- vey of the route between Lethbridge and Vancouver, across the Rocky Mountains to Vancouver. “The starting point of the link be-l tween Ottawa and Winnipeg will be at Pembroke, Colonel Holmes stated-and he believed that the route up the Qt- tawa Valley and through Haileybury would be a highly satisfactory one from what he knows of the country. He was quite conï¬dent that the whole cross continent system would be inaug- urated in a few years and that aerial trafï¬c would prove a big factor in the future development of Canada, as it had already proved its importance in exploration and other work." North Bay Nugget:â€"The proposal of the North Bay Relief Association to close the Government liquor store for three months is not likely to strike a popular not-e. Toronto Mail and Empirezâ€"The three party system is said to be partly to blame for the political condition in England, under which a minority party holds ofï¬ce. If so, it must be said to the credit of politicians that they are not responsible. Every politician be- lieves at heart that the best of all pos- sible systems would be that of a single party. O.
