RIVER $23,000,000 Piant to be Built North of Cochrane. To Supply Power for Sudbury Area. â€" Big Venture Announced. About a years ago The Advance made reference to the possibility of the Onâ€" tario Government filling the needs of the Sudbury area in the matter of power by utilizing the power resources north of Cochrane. At the time The Advance made the reference there were people who expressed the opinion that the plan was not practical and there were doubts expressed as to whether the Government had ever considered such a plan. It appears now that the information given The Advance at the time was well within the range of the practical. Anncuncement to uphold this was made last week at Toronto. In a despatch from Toronto ‘ast Saturâ€" day it was said that announcement of outstanding importance in connection with the development of Northern Onâ€" tario was made Friday night by Preâ€" mier G. H. Ferguson in the purchase by the Ontario Hydroâ€"Electric Power Commission on 40â€"year contract, of 100,000 horsepower from the Hudson‘s Bay Power Company, a subsidiary of the Abitibi Power Paper Company. The agreement approved by the Hydro Commission late Friday and which follows months of negotiations, involves the immediate construction by the Abitibi Company of a $23,000,000 development on the Abitibi River, 65 miles north of Cochrane, and the buildâ€" by the Hydro Commission of a $3,500,â€" 000 transmission line to Sudbury, where the power will be made available at $22 per horsepower, mainly for the purpose of the rapid progress of mining operâ€" ations. Completion of the development and delivery of power is expected late in the fall of 1931. In his statement the premier said lignite coal from the government field at Blacksmith Rapids will play an imâ€" portant part in maintaining the Abiâ€" tibi Company‘s power system at the 275,000 horsepower production peak. The power will enable the government immeasurably in the handling of the lignite, gypsum and clay deposits which it now has under exploration. The contract necessitates, on the part of the government, construction of a five or sixâ€"mile railway spur from the present northerly extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway to the point on the Abitibi River where the power sites to be harâ€" nessed are located. Mr. Ferguson stated the paper comâ€" pany has undertaken to make use of Canadian materials and Canadian laâ€" bour in its plant construction and this he believes will aid materially in reâ€" lieving the prevailing unemployment situation as well as giving impetus to both industry and commerce. Approximately $30,000,000 will be exâ€" pended on labour and materials before the end of 1931 on the project, states Mr. Ferguson. The company‘s conâ€" struction, plus the transmission lines the hydro plan building and the $3,500,â€" 000 being spent by the province on the James Bay extension of the T. N. O. Railway are the major items constitutâ€" ing this amount. wWIDE CHOICE BODY STYLES IN DE SOTO LOWâ€"PRICED CARS Mr. Ferguson‘s statement solves the bullish trend of Hydro stock on the local market in the recent sessions. Many conjectures of mergers, new power development plans and other possibilities involving the company have been piut forward as reasons for the series of advances in the price of the shares. Friday last week Abitibi advanced a further three points to a new high price for the year at 411. be hooked up with the transmission line, and joined up with Southern Onâ€" tario systems. Plymouth is cne lowâ€"price car in which quality is safeguarded in this way. In producing the famour "Silverâ€" Dome" engine, with which the Plyâ€" mouth car is powered, precision meâ€" thods rarely found in lowâ€"priced car manufacture are followed. . Plymouth production engineers have reduced the human factor, or "human equation," and the variableness that goes with it, to a minimum. Every Plymouth engine is tested beâ€" fore, rather than after, it goes into the chassis, just as is done with highâ€"pricâ€" ed cars. Afterwards it may be too late to remedy deficiencies. Motors that do not measure ur! to the fixed standard for Plymouth are rejected. Thus, every car leaves the factory with a tested and proven power plant. While it may seem at first glance that every engine, built to certain specifications both as to materials and capacity, should really deliver the powâ€" er expected of it, and perform satisâ€" factorily, there are certain human facâ€" tors which must ‘be considered. In orâ€" der to guard against oversight or imâ€" perfect workmanship on the part of any man or the assembly line, tests are made of every Plymouth engine. Afâ€" ter the motor is assemibled, it is run under its own power for two hours and the tatuets and other parts adjusted. It is then lifted off the conveyor into one of a dozen dyamometer booths along the line and checked for quietâ€" ness and power. These booths are soundâ€"proof, so that the motor gets an "ear test." The power capacity is also measured, to make sure that the motor is delivering the horsepower called for. The power actually delivered by Plyâ€" mouth metors is usually two or three horsepower above the requirement. 1929 Chevrolet Coach almost new After the motor is placed in the chassis, and the completed car is rolled off the line, there is a third test. This final check is made ‘"on the rolls," as the automobile treadmill used for simuâ€" lating a road run, is called. In this final test the carburetor is checked and the idling speed, electrical equipment, and so forth inspected. If the engine successfully passes all of these tests, the car is released for deâ€" livery. The entire car is, of course, also checked over at this final inspecâ€" tion. The result is that Plymouth, in addition to being the only lowâ€"priced car with a fullâ€"size body, is also the real quality car of the lowâ€"price field. is now president of the Davey company Of the thirteen musical selections given each Sunday during the Davey hour, ten are oldtime melodies and the other three are taken from the classics or â€" semiâ€"classics.
