Member Canada ... $2.00 per year Timmins, In the weekly letter, "The Canadian Legion in the Poreuâ€" pine" the secretaryâ€"treasurer of the Timmins branch this week again calls attention to the unfortunate fact that many returned soldiers are out of employment while to their hardship in this particular they have added the irritation of seeing men of alien birth in full employment and prosperity. 1t can not be denied, despite some partisan politiral propaâ€" ganda, that there is serious unemployment conditions not only in the North but generally throughout Canada. It is true that the Dominion Government‘s immigration policy, or lack of policy, is responsible for the present conditions. At the same time, there is little use in calling attention to that fact except with the hope of avoiding similar poor policy in the future. In the meantime present facts and condiâ€" tions must be faced. The effort should be centred on dealâ€" ing with the matter so that the country and the Canadian people should suffer as little as possible. It would be a good thing for the cause of justice and fairplay, and so of advanâ€" tage to Canada and Canadians, if some method along the lines suggested by the secretaryâ€"treasurer of the Legion could be followed, whereby the preference in the matter of emp‘loyment could be given to returned soldiers and other specially loyal Canadians. This is the attitude that has been adopted by the head officials of all the mines and most of the other large industries in the North Land. There are conditions that perhaps make it difficult always to follow out such a preference but it‘s an idea that is always well worth keeping to the front. It should be noted that some of those usually referred to as "aliens," on account of their foreign birth or foreign nationality are not aliens at all, but have become good Canadian citizens. There are others, however, who make use of the prosperity they have found in this country to advocate the abolition of the forms of government and religious beliefs that former generations of GCRAVEL AND SAND â€" AND PLACER Mrs. McGee received a telegram last night from Ottawa informing her that her son, Murray McGee, had died in the city yesterday. No details in reâ€" gard to the sad news were given, but the death was sudden and unexpected, as Murray McGee had not previously been ill. He had just come over to Ottawa from New York, his sisters beâ€" ing in the capital city. Mrs. McGee left toâ€"day for Ottawa. Murray McGee was wellâ€"known in the town and disâ€" trict, having been in newspaper work here and also on the staff of the brewâ€" ery warehouse as government inspector for a time. He was for many years ressdient of Timmins. The sympathy of all will be extended to Mrs. McGee and family in their sad and sudden bereavement. Death of Murray McGee Reported From Ottawa As will be noted by the advertisement elsewhere in this issue income tax reâ€" turns for all individuals, corporations and joint stock companies should be sent in to the Income Tax Inspector, Daly Building, Ottawa, not later than April 30th. To act promptly in this matter is to avoid chance of heavy penâ€" alties. The accident occurred about 6.30 a.m. Te police were promptly on the score and did all possible to assist in caring fcr those in the maccident. Reports of thc:e in the accident sustaining fracâ€" tured legs and cther injuries do not seem to be founded on fact, according to the informaticn of the officials. Accident on Highway Opposite Mcintyre Sunday The Cochrane town council at its last session passed a resolution expressing the great loss sustained by the town of Cochrane and the district generally in the death of Otto Thorning, and extending sincere sympathy to Mrs. Thorning and family in their bereaveâ€" ment. (FORMERLY RAYNOR‘S GARAGE) GUTTA PERCHA TIRES AND TUBES PRESTâ€"Oâ€"LITE BATTERIES AUTO ACCESSORIES TIRE REPAIRS BATTERY REâ€"CHARGING Phone 15 British people gave their lives to maintain. It does seem unfortunate and undesirable that the real alienâ€"with ideas foreign to all British ideals and hopesâ€"should enjoy prosâ€" perity while the men who fought for the maintenance of the Empire should not know where to find their daily bread. Last week in Sudbury the unâ€"British attitude of some aliens was shown by an attempt to break up a peaceable assembly of loyal Canadians. There was the further unâ€"Britsh anâ€" nouncement by the aliens that hereafter they would not permit any but their own type of alien to address a meeting in Sudbury. If anyone is to starve in this country or to be in want, it does seem that it would be better to have the disâ€" loyal in this position rather than returned soldiers or other good Canadians. In the past the mines and other industries have shown the right attitude and no doubt between the industries and the Legion and others, plans will be perâ€" fected for the benefit for all concerned, SnbA W sttfi Last week The Advance published a threeâ€"inch editorfal note in reference to the stand taken by J. A. Bradette, M.P.. In reviewing the pleasing mystery novel, "Streets of Shadow," by Leslie McFarlane, The Advance last week sugâ€" gested that this talented North Land author might well write a novel depicting the life and spirit of the North. In a note this week to The Advance the author thanks this paper for its review, but modestly pleads that he is waiting to attain the superior craftmanship that such a subject deâ€" serves before he attempts the North Land novel. . Those who read "Streets of Shadow" will note a skill and effecâ€" tiveness with the pen that will tempt to the belief that it is modesty rather than craftsmanship that is holding back the North Land novel. SERIOUS CHARGE DROPPED AGAINST YOUNG MAN HERE At police court this week when the charge of rape preferred against Cecil Knott was called the Crown Attorney asked that the case be withdrawn. This was what friends of ‘the young man had expected, there being a genâ€" eral belief that he was not guilty of any such crime. No evidence was submitâ€" ted and the magistrate gave the acâ€" cused his freedom at once. An ordinary drunk paid $10.00 and costs. A similar amount was paid for a case of reckless driving. The case 0 a man charged with being drunk in charge of a car was remanded for a week. Applications will be received by the undersigned for Stencgrapher in Town of Timmins Tax Office.
