And in the quiet evening hour I know she prays for me, And prays that God will keep me safe In the land across the sea. ‘Timmins, Ont., April 12th, 1930. s (By an Exile) My thoughts they often wander To that land across the sea, Where an aged mother‘s waiting With a smile to welcome me. I can see her resting often In that same oldâ€"fashioned chair, But there‘s furrows in her forehead And there‘s silver in her hair. BEWARE THE RED WOLF! The Homeland THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO Pay Only Down There is no doubt but that the deâ€" velopment of the far north will be oi general advantage to Canada. Accordâ€" ingly matters concerning this far north should engage the attention not only of the provinces concerned but of the Dominion Government as weill. This is the proper attitude taken in an editorial article in the last issue of The Northern Miner.. This item reads as follows:â€" ASK WIRELESS STATIONS FOR AID OF PROSPECTORS "Threeâ€"quarters of the area of Canâ€" ada is unpopulated except for 5,000 Esâ€" kimos, Indians and a few hundred whites. The only hope that there will ever be any change from this condiâ€" tion lies in the efforts of aerial prosâ€" pecting companies. It was prospectors who founded the cities and towns of what is commonly known as the North and it is prospectors who will populate the New North. "Surely the Government of Canada should have a deep and eager interest in the effortsy‘ of the prospectors who are trying, at considerable risk, to build Canada‘s great unexplored areas into regions producing wages and wealth for the rest of the country. True enough, many officials at Ottawa are giving wholeâ€"hearted assistance, but their assistance is too often limited by departmental policy over which they have no control. In the big things the government must give leadership. Wireless Would Increase Chances for Safety of Prospectors in the North,. Dominion Government Asked to Assist. "It has been asserted that the Doâ€" minion Government, as a government, is not as sympathetic, as helpful, as it might be, toward these New North prospecting efforts. Perhaps it is not nearly as helpful as are the several provincial governments in their fields. Many think there is a lack of appreciaâ€" tion of what mining men can accomâ€" nlish for the Dominion‘s welfare, perâ€" haps too much of a disposition to conâ€" sider the Northwest Territories as nothâ€" ing more than a fur farm. Such a nolicy would leave the Territories unâ€" changed from their position of the last twenty centuries. When prospectors and mining men are opening up the heart of Africa surely this great Doâ€" minion, progressive and energetic, should encourage, and reduce the hazâ€" ards, of the task of prospecting its far north. ‘ the mining possibilities of the Northâ€" west Territories, or are slow to recogâ€" nize the valiant work being done by mining men. We have seen too many displays of assistance from the heads ! and officials of the Mines and other ‘Departments. We know that they are anxious to see the New North made inâ€" to a highly useful part of Canada. "For the past few months prospectâ€" ing organizations such as Consolidated Smelters, Dominion Explorers, N.A.M. E. and others, aided by western Boards of Trade, have been endeavouring to get the Ottawa Government to make prospecting safer by the establishment of a few more wireless stations. No great capital expenditure is asked. The money involved is less than a mining company frequently spends on a single prospect. Some of the companies have taken their own wireless outfits into the North and have operated them in the interest of the lives of their rgen and other prospectors and others. ut these outfits do not readily knit into an efficient chain of wireless communicaâ€" tion or thoroughly assure the aerial prospector that all his flights will not be leaps into the dark. The governâ€" ment operation of wireless stations at strategic points, planeâ€"hops apart, netâ€" working the distant north, would be the surest possible insurance against trageâ€" dies and one of the greatest helps the government could give. The governâ€" ment is not being asked to provide something for nothing. . There would be considerable revenue from messages. LMoreover, meteorological work would be immeasurably assisted, to the great benefit of farmers and others. "‘The present system of a private staâ€" tion here, a government station there, leads to confusion. Despite the best efforts of officials, there can be no effiâ€" cient coâ€"ordination. ~"We believe that once seized of the great need of coâ€"ordination the authâ€" orities will be prompt to act. And action will be widely applauded. "In view of the millions of dollars being spent by private companies in prospecting the Northwest Territories, the assistance the government is being asked to give is small. The request is not a selfish one, it is something that will work out to the benefit of the whole Dominion and throw a safeguard over the lives of the courageous Canaâ€" dians who are now speeding out into a new season‘s hazards." Ottawa Journal:â€"A Toronto girl was chased by a muskrat which had eviâ€" dently become confused and supposed itself to be in Sault Ste. Marie. TEMAGAMI INDIAN DIES IN HOSPITAL AT HAILEYBURY The Haileyburian last week says:â€" "Josetih Catt, aged about 27, an Indian resident of Temagami died in the hosâ€" pital of the Sisters of Mercy here on Monday, April 7th. He had been a patient in the institution for about six weeks, having suffered an attack of pneumonia a ‘few months ago, from which he failed to recover. An affecâ€" tion of the nose and ear was the imâ€" mediate cause of death. The body was taken to Temagami on Tuesday for burial." A despatch from Haileybury says that a special institution for Northern Ontario, in which children from this section of the province subject to epiâ€" leptic fits could receive proper treatâ€" ment for their ailments is advocated by Inspector John McCracken, of the Children‘s Aid Society of Temiskaming, and he is considering a suggestion that the help of the Associated Boards of Trade of the district might be enlisted in order to bring the matter more forâ€" cibly to the attention of the provincial authorities. SPECIAL INSTITUTION FOR CHILDREN WITH EPILEPSY MINING HOUSES BURNED DOWN AT COBALT LAST WEEK The shaft house, rock house and oreâ€" sorting house of. the Aguanico Mine at North Cobalt were completely destroyâ€" ed by fire shortly after midnight on Wednesday of last week. Operations at the property, from which heavy shipments of cobalt have been made lately, will be affected for more than a week, it is stated at the mine. The cause of the blaze is unknown, but the flames spread to one large buildâ€" ing about 100 feet in length, and two stories at one end, to the shaft house, rising some 60 feet from the ground. They were of frame construction. Inâ€" surance was carried, it was said, but it is understood that the amount of inâ€" surance carried was not large. to every packege 252 STOGK EXGHANGES MAY YET HOLD PUBLIG CONFIDENCE History of Other Stock Exchanges Show That Properly Conducted Exchanges May MHold Public Regard on Their Own Merit. Recent developments in regard to the stock exchanges in Ontario have arousâ€" ed public interest. While it is true that nothing has developed that was not generally known, or believed at least, before the investigations and court actions took place, still the proseâ€" cutionsâ€"entered some weeks ago seem to have specially directed public attenâ€" tion to the attitude many of the stockâ€" booking houses and their methods of doing business. It is a common thing to hear people ask what will be the outâ€" come of the prosecutions recently inâ€" stituted. It may be said that at least some inkling to what is likely to hapâ€" pén is given by an editorial in a reâ€" cent issue of The Financial Post, of Toronto. In the editorial â€"referred to The Financial Post presents the case about as follows:â€" "The recent revelations of scandals on certain exchanges in Canada have had the effect of weakeninig public conâ€" fidence in all stock exchanges. Even the Montreal Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange have suffered somewhat in the esteem of investors, This, of course, is inevitable. It has always been the experience that honest and well conducted business houses have suffered from the faults and misâ€" demeanors of others, although, of course, to a lesser degree. "The ethical standards of the Toronâ€" to and Montreal Stock Exchanges are high. Their rules and regulations proâ€" vide fair treatment for investors. Members of these exchanges, adhere to proper brokerage standards. "Those other exchanges that showed themselves lax in the governing of the conduct of their members and who permitted serious and inexcusable eviis to fourish will be required by new proâ€" vincial laws to cperate on sounder lines in the future. But legislation is not. the safest assurance that the investor can have. The exchanges themselves must try by their action and the pubâ€" licity that they give to their action win ‘public confidence just as the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Montreal Stock Exchange, (and it may be noted also the Montreal Curb market) have won the confidence of the large majorâ€" ity of investors and have merited the confidence of others. Way of the World" in the Morning Post.) â€" _ I have lately read of a new dance that is coming to Europe. It is corming from the Congo, and a troupe of dusky performers will be brought over to show us how it should be done. This is scarcely remarkable, for all our modâ€" ern dances seem to have a negroid origin, and the music to which we foot them has a savage taint. I am sure that in time the craze will pass aifiter the manner of its kind, else I should fear that we are indeed racirg back into barbarism. Exchange:â€"Finland has made a start toward the suppression of city noises by forbidding the use of motor horns in the town of Aabo which has demonstrated that the horn is no more necessary on the automobile than it was on a fiacre, or oneâ€"hourse bus or a hay wagon. News of the demonstraâ€" tion reached Norway, and in conseâ€" quence the Royal Automobile Associaâ€" tion of Oslo has proposed that in every city of that kingdom the use of the horn shall be done away with, and the attention it involved redirected to skilâ€" ful driving. "The London Stock Exchange had its origin in Jonathan‘s Coffee House at the end of the 17th century. One hundred. years later, when Dr. Johnâ€" son wrote his famous dictionary, ne defined a stockâ€"jobber (as tney were then called), as a "low wretch who gets money by buying and selling shares in the funds." Today the Lonâ€" don Stock Exchange has won public favour and its committee is ever alert to its responsibility to its investors. "Stock exchange practice has been a slow development and its highway of progress has been marked by many obstacles and many byâ€"paths. "‘The New York Stock Exchange, which is today probably, the piremier stock exchange of the world, was the scene of many early scandals. When the New York Exchange was founded in 1792 and brokers met under a butâ€" tonwood tree at 68 Wall Street, they felt no obligation to any one but themâ€" selves. Today the New York Stock Exâ€" change recognizes an important obligaâ€" tion to the general public and to inâ€" vestors. As J. Edward Meeker, the economist of the exchange, said recentâ€" ly, "The Stock Exchange makes no claim to perfection. It is still deeply concerned with improving many of its methods and is strugglingâ€" with the stubborn vestiges of ancient abuses. Yet in its integrity of purpose and is efficiency of operation and in its broad economic usefulness it can today invite comparison with any other business inâ€" stitution in this country." "There is not a stock exchange :n Canada that cannot make itself a useâ€" ful instrument in ‘public finance. In the meantime while some of them are going through periods of trouble and reâ€"organization public confidence should not be denied to those that have already achisved the higher plane." "‘The New York Curb Market bore a very unsavory reputation for many years, but through the courage ant stubbornness of some of its more farâ€" sighted members it has won public recognition.
