"‘The Ontario Government has givâ€" en evidence of its desire to help to proâ€" vide such supplies. It proposed severâ€" al years ago to coâ€"operate with the Dominion Government in the payment of bounties on iron ores mined in Onâ€" tario and delivered to beneficiating plants or blast furnaces. Failing to secure the consent of the Dominion Government to this plan, the Ontarlo Government now contemplates the inâ€" troduction of legislation providing for the payment of a purely provincial subsidy. . The new Ontario research foundation and research workers in the laboratories of the Dominion departâ€" ment of mines, it has been announced, are undertaking investigations of the probiem of smelting lowâ€"grade iron ores, Mr. Edward Turnbull has been carrying on experiments in Ontario with a method of electrical smelting Ontario ores and now the Musco semiâ€"direct steel process is to be tested. Success of the efforts of the Ontaris Government, of experts and of busiâ€" ness men to find means of utilizinz Ontario ores would be very beneficial to this province. It would lead to the establishment of a labourâ€"employing iron mining industry, would free the Ontario iron and steel industry from dependence on foreign sources of supâ€" plies of ore and would keep in Canada money now spent elsewhere in the purâ€" chase of iron cre." Ontario Seeking Ways to Use Its Iron Ores In an editorial article dealing with the announcement that a new process had been discovered that would permit the utilization of the lowâ€"grade iron ore deposits of Ontario, The Toronto Mail and Empire says:â€" About $1300 Realized From Bazaar Last "The announcement that group of Canadian business men has acquired the right to introduce into Canada a new method of manufacturing iron and steel from the lowâ€"grade iron orss and that the method, known as the Musso semiâ€"direct steel process, is to be tested in the laboratories of the National Research Institute in Oitawa, is of interest to Qntario. This proâ€" vince possesses in its northwesteinm disâ€" tricts extensive deposits of iron ore, a number of which are in localities comâ€" paratively easy of access. Unfortunâ€" ately the ore is for the most part 0o‘ low grade. It requires spécial treatâ€" ment or "beneficiation" to make it suitâ€" able for use in the manufacture of iron and steel. For that reason, and beâ€" cause highâ€"grade ore from mines in the United States lhas been obtaingable for Ontario iron and steel plants, the iron deposits of this province have remainâ€" ed to a large extent unexploited. While that is so, it has been recognizâ€" ed that if economical methods of "utilizâ€" ing Ontario ore could be devised, they would be advantageous to the iron and steel industry and to the province at large. Furthermore, they would be a means of protecting the Ontario iron and steel industry from the consequâ€" ences of curtailment of its supplies of raw material from the United States. Of the possibility of such a curtailment the Ontario Iron Ore Commission, apâ€" pointed some years ago, spoke in its report. With that possibility in mind. the commission urged that efforts be made to provide domestic sources of ore supplies for the iron and steel industry in Ontario. mu\\x\sxx\ssmmx\xs\mm\vxmx\“mxs»\\xx\\fi There was a good attendance at the tea and sale of work and homeâ€"cookâ€" ing under the auspices of the Ladies Aid of the United Church on Saturâ€" day last.
