MZlâ€"*+ z80 PLANS FOR PREVENTING _ INFANTILE PARALYS!S Miss Helen McNurchy, MD., Chief of the Division of Child Welfare, Gives Valuable Advice to Curb Spread of Disease A year or so ago there were a coup!e of cases of infantile paralysis in Timâ€" mins, but since that time there have been no further cases. One of the cases was that of a young man who came here from the South and who no doubt contracted that diseases elseâ€" where. The health authorities here saw that every precaution was takei and evidently precautions are of value in this disease as in all others. Reâ€" cently there has been a regular epiâ€" demic of infantile paralysis in Ontario and Quebec. Ottawa has had an usuâ€" ally large number of cases. Last week there were some cases reported in Pemâ€" broke. To prevent the further spread of the disease Miss Helen McMurchy, MD.., Chic?f of the Division of Child ; What seems to be the matter with the ‘child? He has a headâ€"ache. His apâ€" | petite is poor. He is tired. He seems ‘billious. He may complain of feeling | sick or may vomit. Diarrhoea may OCâ€" | cur at first. Sometimes he complains \ of pain, sometimes of a sore throat. \He may be constipated and may not \ pass as much water as usual. Usually \he is thirsty, and flushed and feverish. !Perha,ps he is cross, peevish and irritâ€" | able. His eyes may look dull. He may | be too sleepy, though bright when rousâ€" ed up. His neck or his back may be stiff and painful. Sweating around the mouth. Sleep may be disturbed by twitching. His hand may shake a litâ€" MD., Chicf of the Division of Chil We‘lfare, Oitawa, has prepared an arti cle dealing with precautionary meas ures, and this article should be given th widest possible publicity in the publi interest. The following is the articl by Miss McMurchy:â€" Be Prepared or it may be as long as two weeks. The average time of being not very well, before there is any paralysis, is about 4 or 5 days. The early signs ofâ€" ten come suddenly. A sick child should be in bed. A child who has any of the above sympâ€" toms is sick, and needs rest, quiet and goxd nursing. He should be in bed. Rest is the best treatment. It will do him gcood and it will protect the other members of the family from taking the disease, because no one but the Mother or Nurse should go into the sick room. Dishes and clothes used in the sickâ€"room should be boiled after use or scalded with boiling water. When you know that there are cases of any contagious disease, such as Inâ€" fantile Paralysis, in the city or town, village or district where you live, and when you see that one of your own children is not very well, be sure you keep that child in bed and do not let the other children go into the room tle where he is Send for the Doctor Send for the Doctor. NOW is thei only chance you have to protect your child from the danger of paralysis.} You have heard that there are casesl of Infantile Paralysis about. Your child is not very well. Perhaps tomorâ€" row or even tonight he may show a little weakness of one of his arms or legs. Then it will be too late to preâ€" vent paralysis. NOW is the only time. Doctors all over the world have been trying for years to find something to prevent this paralysis and they have found it. Send for your Family Docâ€" tor or your Medical Officer of Health,‘ if yvou have not a Family Doctor. | THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO By advertising in the newspapers for the name and address of any person who has had an attack of Infantile Paralysis, the Research Committee in Winnipeg was fortunate in getting the assistance of many Donors who were willing to help those who were threatâ€" ened with paralysis. Some of them had the attack a few months or years The man who would never walk again. before and one Donor had an attack thirtyâ€"three years before. In each case the serum was tested and very precauâ€" tion taken. The total number of Donâ€" ors in Manitoba was 113. They were paid a reasonable sum for their serâ€" vices. This was also done in Montreal recently. x Doctors have the knowledge, th: training, the skill, and they can get the serum necessary for cure. They can get the coâ€"operation of the‘ Public Health Authorities, the practising phyâ€" sicians and the general public, who would do anything to protect their children from this dread disease. The Results Kruschen Salts is obtainable at drug and department stores in Canada at 75¢. a bottle. A bottle contains enough to last for 4 or 5 monthsâ€"good health for halfâ€"arâ€"cent a day. In Manitoba the serum was given to fiftyâ€"seven children who were begirnâ€" ning to be ill, before paralysis happenâ€" ed. Not oneg of these fiftyâ€"seven children died and only four had parâ€" alysis after recovering from the attack. The other fiftyâ€"three children recovered completely, with no paralysis. Think of That. Among eightyâ€"seven other children who had the disease in Manitoba and who either did not get the serum treatâ€" ment at all or got it too late, that is. after the paralysis had happened, there were 17 deaths. PFortyâ€"eight of these children had paralysis after recovery Only twentyâ€"two recovered completely. Get Ready It is not too soon for every Public Health Department, every Hospital and every University to make plans. What will you do if a case of Polioâ€"myelitis is reported in your City or District toâ€" morrow? Where is your nearest Laâ€" boratory? What are the names and addresses of the Donors the>â€"Laboraâ€" tory will call on if and when the time of need comes? Talk this over with your own Family Doctor or with your Medical Officer of Health Is there any serum ready? Be Advised If you hear of contagious disease m your district, keep the little children at i home. Do not let them go to picnics| or parties, or play with a lot of other j children, or run on the street or go to| the movies at a time when cases of i contagious disease are about. I Always wash the children‘s hands well before meals. Boil milk for three minutes before you give it to the children. Do not let your children put penells or other articles in their mouths. It is a dangerous habit. Saliva may thus be carried from one child to another and may cause infection. Kissing on the mouth is also dangerous. Saliva passess through one mouth to another and may carry infection. Your own Doctor, or your own Mediâ€" cal Officer of Health or the School Docâ€" tor, or the School Nurse will advise about attendance at school. Schools are sometimes closed for a short time to stop the disease from spreading. Travel in public conveyances such 3as cars and buses is often restricted durâ€" ing an epidemic. Measures of quaranâ€" tine are enforced by the Medical Offiâ€" cer of Health. Be Careful Sometimes a child has a very slight case of Infantile Paralysis and gets better almost immediately and no one knows it. Th child may spread the disease. A healthy child may have the germ which is the cause of the disease in his mouth, throat or nose and yet not be ill at all. That Healthy child may thus spread the disease. ‘This shows how careful we must be to prevent the disease from spreading.
