After the picture pianneu had roused considerable interest there came months when nothing more was sard about it. Mr. McCall left here for a business trip to New York and did not come further North than Haileyâ€" bury where the author of the story was spending the summer. Many have asked The Advance what was doing in regard to the proposed motion picture production. One man, knowing that much of the productiion was to take place in Kamiskotia, enquired if the nroducer was waiting till the railway Talkie" Movie to be Filmed in District Not to be Proceeded With for Immediate Present. producer wWasy wWdilills extension was built WA AC to Kamiskotia. «AAA VY eA J i However, the {ollowing paragraph, unâ€" | TIMMINS DID NOT DO MUCH "Plans for Picture Suspended â€" for der the heading, ‘Breed of Pioneers,‘ Time," appeared in The Haileyburian | last week and may answer the quesâ€" tions thst may be asked in the matter: "Unexpected difficulties attendant on obtaining the use of "talkie" equipment some of the daily have caused temporary suspension of plans for making the motion picture production of "The Breed of Pioneers," aceording to George McCall, director and producer, who was in Haileybury last week. It was planned to make the the TALKING ABOUT ITSELF In an editcrial note last week The Kirkland Lake Northern News said:â€" "Judgoing from the writeâ€"ups of Northâ€" ern Ontario issuing from the pens of newspaper who recently made a tour of the counâ€" try, Timmins is the whole north counâ€" try, and any other community is a mere adjunct. Well!l Why not? The Timâ€" mins town council, Board of Trade and Kiwanis Club were alive to the opâ€" picture as the first Canadian sound and portunity of entertaining these visitors, dialogue film this year, but inasmuch | and seeing that they were told all there as bush fire scenes comprised a major part of the scenario it would have been necessary to bring sound equipment in â€" to the bush country. It was discovered that the expense of this would be pracâ€" tically prohibitive, inasmuch as the outdocor sound apparatus as at present | perfected necessitates the‘ use of heavy | trucks which could not be brought far from centres of population. While no stone was left unturned to put the | was to tell about that town and disâ€" trict, Timmins gets a boost. In this way Timmins reaps the reward of free advertising in the papers represented, as a result of its wakefulness while other communities with just as much, if not more, to show to visitors slept, or at least dozed and let the visitors pass by. Among the latter unfortunâ€" ately was Kirkland Lake. Why?" J. Kelly, local merchant, in converâ€" sation with The News this week told of meeting a bull moose, apparently a four year old animal, as he was reâ€" turning from Cobalt to Kirkland Lake on Sunday night. When near Roseâ€" grove, about 9 pm. the moose came out on to the road and stood in front of the car seemingly attracted and dazed by the headlights, It was not until the lights were put out that the animal moved away and allowed Mr. Kelly to continue his journey. Toronto Mail and Empire:â€"The Otâ€" tawa Journal says some pungent things about the Hudson Bay railroad and concludes its editorial: "Most of us will be listening to the harps of the angels long before much grain is shipped to Europe through Hudson Bay.‘ ‘In the midst of despair the Journal is very optimistic. THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO In reply to the implication in this | Y‘ paragraph it may be said thit in the| $2 case referred to Timmins made no | 21 attempt to create any improper imâ€"| "C pression as to importance of Timmins. ‘th Indeed, emphasis was given to the fact | of of the immensity of the North. Emphasis was placed on | O the need for roads for the North,| C especially for settlers, the need for| N assistance to settlers, ard the need for| W a completion of the belt line of roads ) . for the North. If this is making out Timmins to be the whole North Counâ€" itry. then the North Land surely has ‘no fault to find. The Advance feels that the reference in The Northern| News is made in no unfriendly spirit,| and it is taken in the same friendly way, but the implication that might be taken from the item by those who do not know the point The Northern News is endeavouring to make is so far from the facts of the case that it is worth correction. The Northern News no doubt feels that Kirkland Lake! should have been on the itinerary of the daily editors‘ tour, and The Adâ€" vance agrees with this. The more towns of the North visited the better the impression given of this country. Timmins does not wish to be considâ€"| ered the whole of the North, but it does strive to have visitors impressed with the idea that the North Land is the most important part of this proâ€" vince. i | SUCCESS 15 YOURS Word was received last week at Coâ€" balt of the death at Lubbock, Texas, of the brother of Mr. Geo. Mitchell, the wellâ€"known Cobalt barrister. The late Mr. Mitchell was in his 62nd year. He was a graduate of Queen‘s University in 1896. For four years following his graduation he was a professor of milk testing at the Guelph Agricultural Colâ€" lege under Prof. Black, who was at that time the manager. He also was representative for the department of Argiculture of New Brunswick for two years. During the past number of years Mr. Mitchell has been conducting a dairy machinery manufacturing busiâ€" ness in Texas. The remains are being brought to Lansdowne, Ontario, for burial in the family plot in the cemeâ€" tery thore. He is survived by four brothers, one sister, his wife and three children. BROTHER OF GEO. Por the third time within 1ewW | weeks an Elk Lake man was last week brought to the district jail at Haileyâ€" | bury, it being suspected that he might be mentally affiicted. Some weeks ago, this man, who had previously been a quiet and orderly citizen, began to act in such a way that the people of Elk Lake were worried about his condition and eventually he was taken in charge by the police and removed to the disâ€" trict jail at Haileybury. At the jail he . was quiet, rational and reasonable, and accordingly was allowed to return home Aboout as soon as he got back to Elk Lake, however, he again acted in pecuâ€" liar way, and for the second time was taken to the district jail at Haileybury This time he was kept under observaâ€" tion for some time and doctors examinâ€" ed him in regard to his sanity, but he seemed to be recovered and apparently sane and normal, so he was allowed to go once more. Some days ago Comâ€" plaint from Elk Lake was to the effect that he was abnormal again and after investigation the police brought him for the third time to the district jJail, where once more he seemed to be fully sane. According to the stories from Elk Lake the man doesn‘t act very normally there. He has been known, ‘they say," to kneel down in the middle of the road or walk and offer up prayâ€" ers to the sun. Another charge made against him is that he went naked to the river to swim. Apparently, the people of Elk Lake would consider the iDoukhobors were crazy. Probably the people of Elk Lake are right in both cases. This time the unfortunate man should have a very thorough study ‘ made of his condition. If it is found, heir imout IN JAIL FOR THIRD on CHARGE OF INSANITY made of his condition. If it is found, as would appear from the stories narâ€" rated. that he is sane in jail and inâ€" sane outside, effort should be made to keep» him sane.
