It is doubtful if among all the poliâ€" tical howlers, selected to represent the viewpoint of smallâ€"minded and selfâ€" centred municipalities, this could not be chosen for the booby prize and we trust it escapes the Premier‘s waste paper basket on that account only. It does not appear to have dawned upon the intelligence behind this abâ€" surd resolution that the Chicagoâ€"toâ€" Europe flight was a private venture and that the choice of any route across Canada was subject to permisâ€" sion of the Federal Government to the convenience and comparative safety of The Editor, Porcupine Advance Timmins, Ontario. This week The Advance received the following letter, cleverly written and sarcastic, and all that, but, perhaps, itself needing a little sarcasm in reply: * Cochrane, Ontario, July 27th, 1929 Cochrane Council Upholds Towns Value as an Airport Resolution Passed Regarding Chicagoâ€" toâ€"Europe Flight. Seems to be That Government Officials Interfered at Last Minute to Have Cochrane Sideâ€"Tracked. â€" Cochâ€" rane Citizen Writes Sarcastically About the Matter. . 380 THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO r to have dawned e behind this abâ€" t the Chicagoâ€"toâ€" a private venture Lp VIERY day more and more carâ€" owners are swinging over to the use of Cyclo Gas (Noâ€"knock) Motor Fuel . . . Red Indian Motor Oil . . . Marathon Hiâ€"test Gasoline. Available Loyalty to a cause, or to the interâ€" ests of a striving:â€" town or city by the people thereof, is in most cases to be admired, but in the above imstance it has far exceeded the bounds of proâ€" priety and commonsense, as it preâ€" cludes all recognition of the rights and good judgment of the parties engaged in the flight and is both undignified and humiliating to the citizens of any town or city within the bounds of the British Empire. If it becomes the duty Oof Premier Ferguson or the Ontario Government to investigate matters of such trivial and nonsensical a nature as this in the interests of individual municipaliâ€" ties, we should immediately set about petitioning kind Heaven to dwarf our bodies to fit our intellects, so that we might become in reality the Lilliputian people immortalized by Dean Swift in "Gulliver‘s Travels." When we have reached this stage of development we might then approach Premier Ferguson with the following resolution :â€" 1. Whereas the Lilliputians of the Town of Lilliput have suffered serious inconvenience, loss of prestige, and trade because of the neglect of the adâ€" jacent States to recognize their imâ€" portance and stragetic location among the nations of the world. 2. And whereas they are desirous to be seen, heard and understood before the Council chambers of the League of Nations, and before all other official bodies wherein peoples of like int#rests are usually seen, heard and underâ€" stood. any public expression of resentment, as shown in the resolution referred to, reflects shamefully upon the good sense and feelings of the entire comâ€" munity. Be it therefore resolved It is hereby understood and agreed that Doctors and Nurses will be always in attendance at such meetings and should any or all of such tourists sucâ€" cumb to the ordeals to which they are subjected, resuscitation will be immediâ€" ately applied, and should that fail such tourists will be assured of any interâ€" ment themselves or their relatives deâ€" sire. If the matter is to be taken so seriâ€" ously, why not be fair to the town council of Cochrane? Or is there some rule against that? As The Advance 1. That legislation be immediately enacted compelling all tourists enterâ€" ing Canada at any point along the 3000 niles of international boundary to visit the Town of Lilliput. And be it further resolved:â€" 1. That said tourists be compelled to distribute freely of their wealth and appurtenances thereof among the inâ€" habitants of said Town of Lilliput, for the encouragement of business and the development of industry, and that all amounts so distributed shall be exâ€" clusive of all purchases from Governâ€" ment Control Stores and Warehouses. 3. That said tourists be compelled| to attend at least one meeting of the Board of Public Worries, and attenâ€" tively listen to the momentous ques-l tions therein discussed, taking such | reference notes as justified by the ela-’ borate descriptions of illimitable reâ€" sources, the turning of the first sod, and such other things that all tourists] should know and believe to their souls! health. It is hoped by the above legislation the Lilliputians of the Town of Lilliput will obtain the notoriety and developâ€" ment they apparently enjoy. Yours very truly, J. LANNING. Forst of all The Advance is tempted to say to Mr. Lanning:â€""Deah fellah, for the love of mud, do keep your shirt on!" If the matter is so inconsequenâ€" tial and Lilliputian why waste so many gigantic expletives upon it, and such a fiood of sarcasm to drown so tiny a thing. 2. That said tourists be compelled to visit the Disposal Plant, the Town dump, the Chinese Laundry and at least three other points of senic and national interest. To which the following rider is apâ€" pended ;:â€" |reads their resolution, the councils | chief objection is to the idea that Onâ€" tario Government officials at the last |minute unfairly and improperly perâ€" ger Oof the Eaton Groceteria, Main street,» east of Wyld, has been proâ€" moted to *the position of supervisor of Eaton Grocsterias in Northern Ontario with headquarters here. Mr. McDonâ€" ald‘s territory extends from Pembroke to Sault Ste. Marie and from North Bay to Kapuskasing. HMHe succeeds T. G. McGaw who has been transferred to London to be supervisor of the Western Ontario district." G. Howard tario and a to insure t. Cochrane a between Amos and Cochrane and to and from James Bay; And whereas the Chicago Tribuns announced right along that their plane, making a trial trip over the Northern Circle route last week, would refuel at Cochrane, coming up from Sault Ste. Marie and only in the last minute changed the route to refuel at Remi Lake, being persuaded, according to nress inferences, to this effect by Onâ€" Patrol is most unsuitable for any comâ€" mercial route, being inaccessible and cannot, in the least, be compared with Lillabelle Lake as a refuelling station; Therefore be it resolved that the Municipal Council of the Town of Cochrane respectfully request the Onâ€" tario Government to make investigaâ€" tion why the Town of Cochrane was thus sidetracked and on whose advice the route was changed from Cochrane to Remi Lake and to prevent a recurâ€" rence of sidetracking Cochrane for fuâ€" ture flights; And be it further resolved that copy suaded the airship men to change their route. If this were actually done, the Cochrane council would be fully justiâ€" fied in any protest made. If the counâ€" cil were wrong in their inference in this regard they were at least entitled to a denial or explanation in the matâ€" er. Of course anyone determined to find fault with the Cochrane council could easily feature the fact that the council attached to their protest some publicity for their town as an airport, but the average loyal man will not hold that sort of thing as any very serious matter for condemnation. As a matter of fact, the Cochrane council would have been derelict in its duty had they failed to reg:sster a protest, believing, as they appeared to believe, that Cochrane had the most suitable airport and that its use was prevented on the occasion by improper pressure brought to bear from official or semiâ€" official circles.> The Advance does not pretend to weigh the advantages of the two fuelling stations; that is for the experts to decide. The Advance does not presume to say whether or not any official or semiâ€"official pressure was wrongly brought to have the air flight route changed at last minute. But The Advance does believe that even a town council is entitled to a fair deal. Town councils give enough good service to a community that they are entitled to courtesy, consideration and some measâ€" ure of fairness from all. To give readers the side of the picâ€" ture not covered ‘by Mr. Lanning‘s clever letter, the actual resolution passâ€" ed by the Cochrane town council is given below:â€" Whereas Cochrane is in direct line on the Northern circle air route of the intended commercial air flights via Greenland and Iceland between the industrial centres of the United States and Central Europe; And whereas the relative position of Cochrane for airflights to and from all large cities of the Dominion of Canâ€" ada and the United States is the same as Reykjavik, Iceland, holds for the cities of Europe and this must necesâ€" sarily develop Cochrane into the eastâ€" ern terminus of the Northern Circle And where Lake Lillabelle, just north of the town limits of adâ€" mirably fitted as an air station for seaâ€" planes and has been and is now being continuously used by the General Airâ€" ways planes in their commercial flights between Amos and Cochrane and to and from James Bay:; ern Rou And whereas Cochrane now has a runway which has been found imminâ€" ently satisfactory for landing and takâ€" ing off of land planes as demonstrated during last year‘s trial flight over the Northern Circile Route: North Bay Nuggetâ€"KLEPTOMANIA loses much its thrill when called sneakâ€"thieving by the London merchâ€" ants: there is too much tendency to whiteâ€"wash ugly things by pretty And whereas R â€"the trol is most un rcial route, be it10V 15A CS CUO s i District Managersâ€"Mutual Life of Canada 4 Sullivan Newton Save money by calling on us before you insUre your car or truck. ww _ qs mt Goldfields Block Phone 104 AUTOMOBILE OWNERS rences, to this e ernment official t further resolved that cop )lution be forwarded to Hor Ferguson, Premier of On ilso to the daily press so a he suitability and safety C McD mi Lake air S Goverment iitable for any 1g inaccessibl: spade I1s prett Refnements ma 1gget iA nas been proâ€" f supervisor of orthern Ontario :.
