Lights. water and other conveniences are to be installed. and signs are to be erected to direct visitors to the camp. The town coun- cil. the board of trade and the motor league are working in conjunction in the matter, just as they have done in Timmins and other parts of the North. It would appear as if it would be a good idea that the town councils. the boards of trade and the motor leagues and everybody else in all the towns of the North should get together to see if something could not be done to assure good roads for the motorists to get in this cuntry and its tourist camps. -â€"Ida Rekala, Sandra Wesa. Master Harry Martin is still in the hospital but the latest reports are that he is beginning to recover nicely. Our South Porcupine Fire Depart- ment journeyed to Cochrane in four motors on Monday. The roads were not very good but they got there just the same. Messrs D. McLellan, W. Farren. C. Jemmett and M. Cybulski drove them up. And they got the ï¬rst prize for being the best looking brigade on parade. Of course their wives have known that all along but they are very pleased that the public is now taking cognizance of that fact. They came fourth in the wagon race, there being only four seconds between them and the winners. In the ladder race they have been making it in 17 seconds right along at practice but a fluke in their ï¬rst coupling put them out of it. The following shows the times made by the different teams. Although the streets in general were rather muddy the portion ï¬xed up for the sports was in splendid shape. Fire chiefs' racyâ€"18L J. Matheson, Kirkland Lake; C. Mongeon, Anson- ville; H. June 30th. when Mrs. Fred Starr died at the Toronto General hospital. Mr. Starr had been called to her bed- side a week previously. when her con- dition became serious after an opera- tion. With her at the end were her sons. Harvey and his wife. of Peter- borough; Milton and wife and child. of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. P. Starr, a bro- ther; Mrs. J. Braund. a sister, and Mr. and Mrs. Clark (niece), of Oshawa. The late Mrs. Starr was born sixtyâ€"five years ago at Pleasant Point. Southern Ontario. Thirty-ï¬ve years ago she was married to Mr. Fred Starr at. her home town. In the autumn of 1911 with their family they moved to South Porâ€" cupine and have lived here ever since. There is left to mourn her loss, three children by a ï¬rst marriage:â€"â€"â€"Mrs. U. Bennett. Timmins. Mrs. Ernie Roy, South Porcupine, and Norman Starr, Lindsay; also the three sons and daughterszarvey Starr, of Peterbor- ough, Miltpn, of Detroit, is. Asa Lafï¬n, South Porcupine. and George at home. The funeral was held at the United Church at two o'clock on Wednesday. Rev. E. C. Moddle re- maining here to take the service. The late Mrs. Starr has been a faithful friend and neighbour to those who knew her best. While her health per- mitted she did much work in the Unit- ed Church and also in her own way was ever ready to help where there was sickness or trouble. During the Great War her work for the Red Cross was wonderful. We have been asked by several who worked with her, then, if we could ï¬nd out how many pairs of socks she knitted personally for the soldiers but no deï¬nite count was kept. Those who were helping then say that she was indefatiguable in her efforts for the boys overseas, among whom were her sons. Mr. A. Chief Borland and his men had four calls to answer in two days last week. Three of the calls were on the one day and two of the responses were for the one place. Thursday last. June 27th. there was a call for a chimney ï¬re on James street. No particular damage done by this blaze. At 2.30 pm. the same day there was a call to 337 Pine street. south. owned and occupied by R. Armand Dalphe. At the time of the ï¬re there was no one in the house. The blaze started ap- parently in a clothes closet. but the cause for the starting of the ï¬re has not been determined. The ï¬remen us- ed a water line and got the blaze out. The house is a long structure with ï¬lling in the walls for protection from the weather. and ï¬re once getting in the walls is difï¬cult- to completely ex- tinguish. As the building is outside the town limits the ï¬re chief did not care to leave one of the ï¬remen on duty there, so told the pe0p1e of the house to keep a watchful eye to see that ï¬re did not again break out from the walls. In about an hour later. there was an- other call, fire having started up again. This second blaze was duly extinguish- ed. The total damage would be about $300.00 to the building and around $500.00 to the furniture. About $2200 insurance was carried on furniture and house, so the loss was fully covered. While in town last week Mr. C. G. Williams, who during his long residence in Timmins always showed so keen and helpful an interest in Children's Aid Society work, paid a visit to the Shel- ter that he had done so much himself to establish. He was well pleased with the evident progress and success of the work there. and left behind a gift of cash to assure a treat for all the young- sters. They elected to attend Palmer’s shows and the youngsters certainly had a big time there on Wednesday evening; last as a result of Mr. Williams' gener- ous treat. Fire Brigade Answers Four Calls in Two Days TEMISKAMING AND NORTHERN ONTARIO RAILWAY On Friday, June 28th. at 2.30 a.m.. there was a call to 11 Balsam street. owned by the McGrath Estate, and George Zasina being the tenant. When the alarm was turned in the whole interior of the place, which is used as a shoemaker shop. was in flames. The origin of the ï¬re is not known. When the ï¬remen arrived they found the key in the door but no one near the building. except those at- tracted by the ï¬re. The contents of the building were destroyed by the ï¬re and the building was gutted. There is no insurance on the building. but the contents carried insurance of $250.00. Brian Lynch. Lympia Carien.
