TIMMIN®, ONTARIO OFFICE 26â€"â€"â€"PHONESâ€"â€"RESIDENCE 70 Member of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association Published Every Thursday by: GEO LAKE, Owner and Publisher Subscription Rates: Canada........... $2.00 per year United States.. $3.00 per year Last week The Toronto Mail and Empire published a special section devoted to extolling the advantages of Onâ€" tario as a place for tourists to visit and giving particulars of its outstanding summer resorts and camping grounds. Naturally, special attention was given to Northern Ontario, and this section of country should benefit materially froni this cort of publicity. One article, published elsewhere in this issue, deals exclusively with the attractions for tourists along the Ferguson highway. It is to be regretted that in this interesting article there is only a bare mention of Timâ€" mins. Timmins should offer very special attractions to the summer visitor, and so might well be given extended menâ€" tion. Timmins is a city built where only a few years ago there was virgin bush. The town acreage includes the Holâ€" linger Mine, recognized for years as the greatest individual producing gold imine on the continent. Other mines of almost equal importance are in the immediate vicinity. The modern type of buildings here, the size and grace of the school structures here, the importance of the wholesale and retail businesses in town, and the fact that the town is most modernly equipped in water service, sewerage, fire protecâ€" tion, streets and walks, all make the centre of particular interest. The monrey spent here for education, $1,500,000.00 being invested in the schools, and the importance given by the people to the finer things of life, make the town of especial interest. Visitors will not fail to be interested in Timminsâ€"a modern city of 12,000 people, situated the casual visitor would scearcely expect to find a new town of such progressive and attractive type. ‘Dr. George, District Officer of Health, is credited with saying that unless quarantine is properly cbserved in Cochâ€" range where there is at present an epidemic of a mild type of measles, police court cases will follow and penalties will be awarded for breach of the regulations regarding quaranâ€" tine, rules that are designed to protect the public generally. It might be of advantage to the public if there were a numâ€" ber of prosecutions for ccntempt of the safeguards planned for the protection of the public heaith. Cochrane is not the only place where quarantine is disregarded and the public welfare thus needlessly jeopardised. In the past there have been some flagrant cases of the same evil in places much closer to Timmins, despite the care and watchfulness of the health authorities. It is regrettable that there seems to be an inability on the part of many to realize that the pubâ€" lic in general have rights and that it is the duty of every citizen to guard these rights. An honourable observance of quarantine in most cases will avoid the menace of an epidemic and in all cases will prevent the epidemic from being as widespread and as serious as it would be without such safeguards. ‘Throughout the whole world there will be sincere regret and sorrow at the death this week in England of General Bramwell Boofth, for many years in command of the Salvaâ€" Timmins, Ont., Thurs GRAVEL AND SANDâ€"AND PLACER .fl’é?fif’éfllfflszllfflfff’%ffiff?fllfl%fill’?ffifffffi * *4 * 44 4 > * %¢ Thursday, June 20th, 1929 s ... s . s s s s s s i i i i i i i i in n i in n id i5 i5 i5 i5 15 05 15 1515 15055 355 45 45 3 jo11}SI(] F/flowfif.fl/zrl///li //lzfllfffflf/fllll”l’llf/’lllf/f’/’f/’ 41 Obe Yorrupine Advance MAY REPRESENT CANADA IN ALONE" INVESTIGATION Eugene Lafieur, K. Experienced Mechanic Car Repairing Charges Reasonable Orange Celebration FRIDAY, JULY 12th Will be held in Timmins once again June 20th, 1929 Rear of 156 Eim St. South Phone 609â€"] l Despatches from Toronto this week would suggest that the purpose of the delegation from Timmins interviewing lPremier Ferguson on Tuesday was to protest against the idea of asking any guarantee before the railway should be started. A much fairer way to state the case would be to say that the Timmins town council and the Timmins board of trade are extremely anxious to have the railway constructed for the good of this town and for the early deâ€" velopment of the Kamiskotia area. With the opening up of the new mining area they vision advantage to the whole province. They centre their ideas on having the railway built at once for the general good. Their protest is against further delay in the building of this railroad. There is a ‘general opinion that the building of the railroad to "Kamisâ€" kotia is fully warranted by the prospects of the new camp ‘and that it will be completely justified by the development |achieved after it is constructed. tion Army. The Salvation Army is established in 80 differâ€" ent countries, preaching the gospel in 53 languages. Its social service and welfare work is a blessing and a help to every country in which the Army fights evil and uncleanâ€" ness. Bramwell Booth played a great part in making the Army successful. The world owes him a debt of gratitude for great service joyfully given. The mayor of Toronto and the mayor of Kingston are conducting a sprightly debate as to which of these two sclemn cities is the more loyal to the Empire. Figures in regard to recruiting for the recent world war, money conâ€" tributed for pzstriotic purposes, and the history of the founders of the two cities are being quoted to prove that one or the other of these two cities deserves the laurel for loyalty. The truth is that both Kingston and Toronto are loyval cities, but judged by facts of actual contributions to the welfare of the Empire, there are scores of small towns and villages and other communities that considered proporâ€" ticnately have displayed much greater loyalty than either of the cities that now argue their merits. The rolls of the regiments and the books of ths Red Cross and Patriotic societiecs would prove this point. To the welfare of the nation the smaller centres have made magnificent contriâ€" bution of talent, effort and service, and in those things lie the better test of loyvalty. ticnately have di of the cities that regiments and thi would p nation the smalle bution of talent, 6 the better test of Chief McLauchlan is to be complimented on the plan he has adopted this week for dealing with minor breaches of the traffic and highways acts. It is the sort of method The Advance suggested some weeks ago when there was considerâ€" able illâ€"feeling harboured by many good citizens against a neighbcuring municipality because of the imposition of small fine and large costs for technical breaches of the law, these breaches in most cases being due to no more than thoughtlessness or oversight. Chief McLaughlan‘s plan is to give a ‘"card" to any motorist who breaks any of the mincr clauses of the traffic laws. It is recognized that all the clauses must be observed, but twelve dollars seems too high a penalty to pay for a moment‘s oversight when no one is endangered or even inconvenienced. In cases of minor offences, such as wrongful parking that does no serious harm, perhaps in the particular instance noticed, a card is given to the offender requesting a call at the police station. If the motorist fails to obey the call naturally a summons to court will be a matter of course. If the offender calls at the police station the necessity for observance of the law is impressed without undue cost. In the case of good felâ€" lows, The Advance believes this type of warning will do more good than irritating fines. The man who offends once through thoughtlessness or carelessness, will pay more atâ€" tention in the future, and the whole purpose of the law be thus advanced. I‘s a harder than hoein‘ turnips an‘ A easier than diggin‘ potatoes." There will be very general regret at the fact that at the end of this school term Mr. Boyce, assistant principal of the Central public school, will leave here. Mr. Boyce is taking the princiâ€" palship of the Schumacher public school in succession to Mr. J. A. Push. During his stay in town Mr. Boyce has done ‘exceptionally fine work here and his influence over the boys under his care has been very helpful indeed. Farmer (to friend): "I hear, Bert, that while ye were in the city ye took up this here golf. How‘d ye like it?" Thre will be very general pleasure at the fact that the move means romoâ€" tion for him, and also that his new school will be close in Timmins where he has so many friends and admirers among the adults as well as among the boys.
