CUT HEADS OFF DANDELION®S BEFORE THEY GO TO SEED A gentleman who is specically inâ€" terested in horticultural matters and the beautifying of the town, suggested to The Advance this week that special note be made asking all to see that dandelions on their lawns or in their yards do not go to seed, This can easily be done by simply cutting off the heads of the dandelions before they come to seed. Many in town have beautiful lawns that they attend to carefully, but their efforts are much hnampered because others allow dandeâ€" lions to seed and the seed blows all over carrying the weed to the carefullyâ€" tended lawns as well as elsewhere. Anyone going much around town will agree that the dandelions are a nuisâ€" ance and spoil lawns and other pretty places. If all would combine to eradiâ€" cate the pest, they could be done away with. At the very least everybody should give this measure of helpâ€"to cut off the heads of the dandelions beâ€" fore they come to seed. w d n t ts t m t t t o t t o Tt t e t t t t s i t t td t t t t in t 0n o t3 0 t3 i0 0 tC 00 3 C i 5 5 * + Moose Made Nice Win From Tuxis Last Night In one of tns most exciting games of softball of the season the Moose beat the Tuxis last night to the tune of 9 to 7. Tuxis, after leading with a score of 6 to 0, blew up in the first of the seventh, when the Moose came through with hits galore, including a home run. The good work done by the Moose made the victory a wellâ€"merited one. The Schumacher United Church choir is scheduled to give a musical programme in the Timmins Salvation Army citadel on Thursday, June 20th. The programme will feature local vocal solos, duets, part songs and anthems, violin and pianoforte solos also. The choir has put on a number of proâ€" grammes at the Army and it is expectâ€" ed that this vear‘s event will be well worth the patronage of the Timmins people. sCHUMACHER UNITED CHUKCH CHOIR AT ARMY HALL, JUNE 20 i In discussing the matter a despatch | from Montreal last week says:â€" \ _"In what dim age was this "law" born: in what circumstances; and how was it transplanted in New France to ibe handed from generation to generaâ€" *tion even to the 20th century? Such lls the question now occupying E. Z ANGIENT TRADITION SAID T0 HAVE CAUSED TROUBLE "Fortyâ€"Man" Law Alleged to Have Been Invoked in the Abitibi Disâ€" trict in Quebec Stories to the effect that there were riots threatened recently in the town of Senneterre, Quebec, have been curâ€" rent recently, and the cause of the trouble is an odd one. Senneterre is in the Abitibi section of Quebec and is a town frequented by lumberjacks on their way to and from the According to the reports, a group of lumbermen came out of the woods to Ssenneterre, claiming that their conâ€" tract had been broken. The men gathered at Senneterre and when offiâ€" cers of the law tried to get them to observe certain rules and regulations necessary in towns the lumberjacks quoted in reply what they insisted was an old law of Quebec, in force for cenâ€" turies, "that 40 men, grouped, and havâ€" ing the same view, or the same object, make law." Massicotte, court house archivist, who has before him data proving that the tradition has been widespread in the remote areas of this province. ing out of the bush, they united at senneterre, and, for a time, there was an ugly situation in the little Abitibi town. Officers of the law were sumâ€" mone@, together with officials from the department of lands and forests at Quebec. The wouldâ€"be rioters were soon told that execution of plans for making trouble would be quickly checkâ€" er, according to the laws of the land. Then came the occurence which has raised the question of the origin of the old "40â€"man law." "‘The Senneterre incident came A week or two ago. | It was based on comâ€" plaints from lumbermen that their contract had not been followed. Comâ€" "One of the government officials from Quebec has written to Mr. Massicote as follows: "I heard it affirmed by some of the men at Senneterre that 40 men, grouped and having the same view or the same object, make law. In around 50 years, this is the third time that the same affirmation, to my knowledge, has been made. I have nown of it around 1880 at St. Elie de Caxton (St. Maurice county); in 1918 at Grande Baie, Lake St. John, and now in 1929 at Senneterre, Abitibi. "I questioned those people, and they know nothing of the origin of the preâ€" tension, but their contention is that 40 men have all privileges and all powâ€" _A ABR _ 2s ers. One of them told men that his father had said this dated from the time of the knights of old France, who used this law to impose their views on their sovereign." "That is all the information Mr. Masâ€" sicotte now has before him. In comâ€" mencing his research, however, various suggestions have been made to him. That the tradition, or "law," is Euroâ€" pean in origin is taken as beyond quesâ€" tion. Whether it is a relic of the days when each province in France had its own "coutume," or code of laws; or whether it came from Britain in preâ€" feudal days or feudal days} whether it _A t . is a fragment of written or unwritten law, are all matters to be threshed out. And, as for the birth of the ‘"law" on this side of the Atlantic, search much be made to determine whether it came with the pioneers of New France, or whether it is one of those clauses of the unwritten "bush law" and study must be made to decide the possibility of its having possibly been transmitted to the old voyageurs by sScots traders, or by other Europeans of the early days." LOOKING AFTER OLD AND NEGLECTED CEMETERIES toâ€"day should, where it is necessary, look more carefully after the places where they wore buried." THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO BAYSIDE BEAGH RESORT OPENED AT BARBER‘S BAY Dancing, Boating, Bathing,~ Fishing, Tourists‘ Huts for Rent, Camp Sites, Etc. Red arrows have been posted along | the roads throughout the district pointâ€" ing the way to Bayside Beach, the new . picnic grounds and summer resort of the North Land. The new resort openâ€" ed this week and found it difficult to handle all the people attracted to this beautiful location and all who appreâ€" ciated the ideal site and the facilities afforded. The two enterprising genâ€" tlemen, who have started the »project, Messrs Hall, of Schumacher, have planned well to give the people of the district and all from a distance a conâ€" venient and delightful place to picnic or to visit. They have arrangements made now to accommodate all comers, and the ideal spot chosen should prove very popular. Dancing, boating, fishâ€" ing, bathing, etc., are some of the pleaâ€" sures available. Hot lunches will be served at all hours. There is a reâ€" freshment booth for the convenience of all. Tourists huts are available for rent, while camp sites may also be seâ€" cured. Every Wednesday night there is to be a dance, while there is also a special weekly dance on Saturdays. The site at Barber‘s Bay is one of the ideal locations in this part of the North Land, and as a picnic grounds and for children the new Bayside Beach proâ€" mises to be especially attractive. It would be well worth while for anyone to "follow the arrows‘" and sample the pleasures of Bayside Beach. T.
