At time of writing the roadside has a hedge of old burdock stalks which would do credit to any grower if the burdocks were any kind of merchantable grain. Just who is responsible for allowing this disgraceful condition of affairs to exist we know not; but we hope that the hint is all that is necessary to have the nuisance removed from eyesight, at least before outside visitors begin to make extensive use of the highway. ‘Ten minutes of the time of a man would have destroyed these burdocks before they had the opportunity of scattering millions of seeds around the ground." sOME CROP OF BURDOCKS ON THE FERGUSON HIGHWAY Blairmore (Alberta) Enterprise:â€" They have a new brand of liquor south of the line and it is knownr as "North West Mounted," because it alâ€" ways gets its man. Timmins, Ontario PLOT OF PIGTURE BASED QN THE HAILEYBURY FHRE "Talkie" Movie to be Produced in ‘MAmâ€" mins and District a Real No Land Feature, Many recent referenc# have been made in The Advance to the motion picture film, "Breed of the Pioneer," to be produced in Timmins and district this summer. In view of the fact that it will be the first allâ€"talking picture made in the British Empire as well as the first motion picture drama in this part of the North there is very general interest in "Breed of the Pioncer." Further, it may be noted that the auâ€" thor of the story on which the motion picture "talkie" will be based is a North Land writer of distinction, Leslie Mcâ€" Farlane, formerly of Haileybury. Mr. McFarlane has moved his family to Haileybury for the summer to be able to be here to assist in the production. In referring to the matter last week The Haileyburian said:â€" "Preliminary work on the motion picture production of "The Breed of Pioneers," film epic of the North Counâ€" try, has already been started, according to Leslie McFarlane, author of the short story from which the picture is being made. While there are many details to be taken care of, more ceâ€" tails than usual, as a matter of fact, because "The Breed of Pionesers"is to be a talking picture, it is confidently exâ€" pected that the film will go into proâ€" duction late in June or early in July. It will be the first allâ€"talking picture produced in the British Empire. "Mr. and Mrs. McFarlane and their infant daughter arrived in Haileybury on Monday from Toronto, where they spent a few days after their departure from Montreal. They are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. McFarâ€" lane, Marcella Street, and plan to take up residence here for the summer. Leslie has been retained by the comâ€" pany producing the picture to assist in an advisory capacity during the flming of his story. "I‘m particularly pleased that the first of my stories to be purchased for the motion pictures is a North Country yarn and that it will be produced in the North Country,‘ . he said; ‘It. will probably interest Haileybury peonle to know that the story is really the tale of the Haileybury fire. As it appeared originally in MacLkean‘s Magazine, I was obliged to altar my background considerably, for technical reasons, in order to play up my characters, but the descriptive passages and the general theme rise directly from the disaster. The plot has been elaborated somewhat for the picture version." "It will be a ‘talkie,‘ of course. Siâ€" lent pictures are on the way out. I think the sound and dialogue effiects will enable us to get a great deal more authentic Northern atmosphere into the picture than we could do otherwise. The fact that it will be the first allâ€" dialogue and sound picture produced in the British Empire lends added interâ€" est." 10 7 3 and up at the factory Touring. . . . . $1075 Hoadster . ... . . 1073 2â€"Door Sedan . . 1075 Business Coupe . 1075 4â€"Door Sedan . . 1120 De Luxe Coupe . 1120 (with rumble seat) 4â€"Door Sedan De Euxe . ... 1205 All prices f. o. b. Mr. McCall is very anxious to hav» a production that will be accurate in every fdetail and will probably be in Haileybury this week for a conference with the author. Practically the entire picture wilt be photographed in the North Conr:try, although the lack of sound stages in Canada may make it necessary to take a few of the dialogue interiors in New York. "George McCall, who will direct the picture, has directed many feature proâ€" ductions of Hollywood motion picture concerns and has earned an enviable reputation in this field, critiecs paying him special tribute for the artistry of his productions. Recenitiy ne hnas been with the Ontario Government Mction Picture Bureau. Having had both stage and motion picture experience, he is well eqauipped to turn out a picturr that should rate highly from both dialogue and photographic standards. His aim is to make ‘"The Breed of Pionscers‘"‘ a picture truly reflective of the North Country. "The picture will be made under the British quota act which requires that 12% p.c. of all pictures shown in Creat Britain must be produced on British soil and by British talent. Under this quota act, pictures must be produced with 100 p.c. British capital, 75 p.c. Briâ€" tish workmen, 75 p.c. produced in Briâ€" tish soil. Canadian capital is backing the film and more than the required 75 p.c. of production will be in the North Country. The fact that the picâ€" ture comes under the quota ensures its presentation field in the Old Country, and inasmuch as the supply of good talking pictures falls far short of the Canadian and American demand, leading distributors on this continent have already shown interest in the proâ€" dauction. "It is planned to fim a number of scenes at Golden City while the major part of the location will be near Timâ€" mins, in the Kamiskotia area. There will be many "extras‘ employed and all "sets" will be made in Timmins. "While a number of motion ni¢cture companies have invaded the North Country in past years for the purpose of shooting scenes for various producâ€" tions, "The Breed of Picneers" will be the North Country‘s own picture, a triâ€" bute to the builders of the Northland, conceived and written by a Northern Oontario author, and produced in the country which inspired the story." L. had been making good progress up to this point, but he laughâ€" ed so heartily he pretty nearly came a cropper. There was a good joke on L. R. Wilâ€" son, Managing Director on his recent visit to Smooth Rock Falls Mr. Wilâ€" son likes to carry a cane and always does in the City; he does not carry it to attack the people with whom he has a difference of opinion, but just because he likes it. Usually when he visits the mills he does not carry his cane. probâ€" ably because he thinks that the fellows might think he. was puting on "dog," but at Smooth Rock there wasâ€"a little ice on the sidewalk so he carried his cane to use as a sort of a third leg on the way from the mill back to the siaff hnouse. As he came down the street three little gaffers, total age about 18, stopped from their play and watched him as he came down the slippery sidewalk, and this is the greeting he got from one Oof them : « FERGUSON HIGHWAY NEEDS sSOME LITTLE FIXING UP NOW The New Liskeard Speaker last week says:â€""During the latter part of last week the Ferguson Highway some thirâ€" teen or more miles north of New Lisâ€" keard was in very bad cond‘tion. Winter gravelling which doees not apâ€" pear to have been graded down, toâ€" gether with heavy driving and the apâ€" parent passing over that section of a tractor has played havoc with the road bed. Wherever the road was left last fall in a wellâ€"graded state the road is invariable in firstâ€"class shane. Travelâ€" lers from the south say that with the exception of the section between Latchâ€" ford and Cobalt, the road to Toronto is pretty good. In the section referred to gangs of men and teams are at work widening and improving the oriâ€" ginal "trail" which connected the lumâ€" bering centre with the silver camp." "What‘s the matter foot?"
