Simcoe Reformer:â€"The Civil Serâ€" vice Act has been abused. The King Government is suffering abuse at the hands of its critics for this very reason. The logical step for the Government is the institution of a judicial enquiry directed towards making effective the provisions of the Act according to the true intent of its framers. Hon. P. J. Veniot cannot be condoned for his flagrant disregard for and intentional violation of this Act. The King Govâ€" ernment can at least render itself imâ€" mune from further accusations in this connection by the step mentioned. The idea underlying this annual event is to stimulate patriâ€" otism and to encourage Canadian and other British trade. ‘Trade is the foundation of national prosperity ana for all parts of the Empire to trade together is to increase ‘the general prosperity and progress. During the week of May 25th to June 1st it is proposed to specially feature British goods, whether the products of Canâ€" ada or of other parts of the Empire. To make this Empire Shopping Week a success it is necessary to secure the coâ€"operation of all. In Canada the Canadian Manufacturers‘ Association is giving the most wholehearted asâ€" sistance for the success of the week this year. The wholesalers in general are also giving hearty support. / number of retail associations are pledged to work to make the event a success. Individual merchants are inâ€" terested and with all working together Empire Shopping Week should "go over big‘" this year. The newspapers are going in strong with the movement and it is expected that the interest of the general public will be roused so that a very notable impetus will result for Empire trade. Within the British Empire it is posâ€" sible to secure goods of almost any kind, and there are few, if any, lines in which the British goods are not superior to any obtainable outside the Empire. British goods are famous the world over for superiority. It is good business for the individual to purchase British goods, and it is also good fo:r the nation, helping as it does the prosâ€" perity of the various parts of the Emâ€" pire. In each section of the Empire it is likely that the particular goods of that part will be specially held in mind during Empire Shopping Week, but the innumerable other lines specialized m other divisions of the Empire will be featured as well. It will be found that there are few things that are purchasâ€" ed that cannot be bought within the Empire to the decided advantage of all concerned. It is all a matter of knowâ€" ing the facts and through such mean» as the Empire Shopping Week giving the information about British products and their superiority. In previous years the merchants of Timmins have coâ€"operated in the Empire Shopping Week, and this year still more interestâ€" ed and extended assistance is promisâ€" ed to make the event a helpful sucâ€" cess. This is a proper way of looking at the matter and will be found to be the reasonable one. The Ottawa Journal‘s editorial reads as follows:â€" "Sspeaking before the South Ottawa Conservative Association on Tuesday night Mr. Charles McCrea, Ontario Minister of Mines, said: "Irrespective of what the stock tickâ€" ers may say, there is abroad an enâ€" thusiasm and mining development that has not been exceeded in any preâ€" vious year. From Hudson Bay to Optimism the Proper Attitude on Mining Now The mistake made by some in judgâ€" ing the mining industry by the condiâ€" tion of the stock market is dealt with in an editorial last week in The Ottaâ€" wa Journal based on an address by Hon. Chas. McCrea. Hon. Mr. Mcâ€" Crea savs that "there is a mining and vIOUuSs_ YCRT.>â€" »RFTFOIMY PX North Bay there is a m pecting activity that is very substantial results of Ontario. Our mines to three and four thot ore bodies of great w plotted and blocked. . now ahead in copper a ing, particularly in th trict." "This is wholesome optimism. It is a profound mistake to judge the conâ€" dition of the mining industry, or, inâ€" deed, of any industry, by the fiuctuaâ€" tions of the stock market. In the case of mines, too many people have failed to make a distinction between mining prospects and mines that are being operated and producing conâ€" crete results. In other words, they have confused speculation with investâ€" ment. "The consequences of this mistake, reflected by the ups and downs of the stock ticker, have not affected the proâ€" duction of mines. Today, more than ever before in our history, Ontario‘s mines are richly productive, yielding treasure undreamt of twenty years ago, in a fair way to make this province and this country among the richest in the world. ‘"This does not mean that there are necessarily great ore bodies wherever eager prospectors may stake a claim, or that all we have to do to get rich is to buy a mining stock. What it does mean, however, is that, no matter what the tickers may say from day to day, there is great prosperity in store for Ontario and for Canada, and that wise investment in mines of demonâ€" strated value will ultimately bring subâ€" stantial results.
