ONTARIO OFFICE 26â€"â€"â€"PHONESâ€"â€"RESIDENCE 70 Member of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association Subscription Rates: Canada............ $2.00 per year United States . $3.00 per year Last year, on behalf of the settlers along the Mattagami river, The Advance protested against plans that were said to be under way to monopolize the water frontage of the settlers‘ properties along the river. Assurance was ‘hen given that the rights of settlers would be fully protected. According to the letter, elsewhere in this issue from one of the settlers, the deal to monopolize the water frontage has gone through, despite all assurances to the contrary. This is a matter that the Government should carefully consider at once. While all recognize the desirability of encouraging the lumber industry, no business is worth too high a price. For many months in the year the river is the only highway available to many settlers and others. As The Advance has persistently repeated, "the river should be kept free for In connection with the prosecution of the editor of the Finhish newspaper, "Vapaus," for seditious libel, the question of Bolshevik agitation and revolutionary talk and teaching by foreigners in Canada has been brought to atâ€" tention. In considering the matter, many take a very foolâ€" fsh and illogical attitude. When objection is taken to sediâ€" tion and Bolshevik agitation, there are some who say:â€""Oh, let them talk! Let them blow off steam! That is the way the British in the Old Country have handled the agitators.". The present conditions in the Old Land are not very flatâ€" tering evidences of the success of any viewpoint or zrame of mind. The truth is that the Old Land British have been simply "muddling through" in this as in some other partiâ€" #eulars. Tolerance can be carried to the point of absurdity and really work for intolerance. There is nothing tolerant about communism. . To tolerate it until it gains an upper hand is to work for eventual intolerance. When some alien, who had no liberty in his own land, abuses the large meaâ€" sure of British liberty in this country, in fairness to all other mliens as well as in justice to Rritishers, that ungrateful and shortsighted foreigner should be set right. There is no sense in calling out the parrot cry, "Where is your British Timimins, Ont., Thursday, Jan. 10th, 1929 GRAVEL AND SANDâ€"AND PLACER Che Yorruptne Anruance The death occurred last week at Ani «rbor, Michigan, of William C. The later Mr. Millman was born in Barrie, Ont., and was in his B8th year at the time of death. For a of years he has been a resident af North Bay, going there from Cochâ€" rane some eight years ago. He was one of the wellâ€"known and popular locomoâ€" tive engineers on the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway. He is surâ€" vived by three sons:â€"Roy, of Nakina; Albert and Clifford; and two daughâ€" ters, Lillian, in Toronto, and Arvilla. Mrs. E. Moth, of North Bay, and Mrs. H. Pierpont, of West Ferris, Ont., are sisters. The remains were brought back to North Bay for interment, the funeral being on Friday afternoon last under the auspices of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen. Rev.‘ J. C. S. Drew presiding. The new year opened in Cobalt, says The Northern News, with a heavy snow storm which continued practicalâ€" ly all day. About six inches of snow had fallen by noon. At the last meeting for 1928 of the Teck township council, held on Dec. s1st, a byâ€"law was duly passed confirmnâ€" ing the appointment of Meredith Egan as chief of police for Kirkland Lake and the rest of Teck township. ‘"Welsh Night" at the band concert in the Goldfields theatre on Sunday evening, Jan. 13th, after the church services, will provide one of the best programmes ever given in this series. The Welsh folk are noted far and wide for their musical ability, and they have prepared an extra special programmes for the band night event. Antonio Scappatura, for the past eight years one of the three brothers directing the Mackey House hotei at North Bay, died at his home in North Bay last week, aged 42 years. He was wellâ€"known in the North Land where he had many friends who will regret his death. He is survived by his parâ€" ents, both of whom are living in Italy, and his widow and six children. Complaints are too frequent of theft| from prospectors‘ camps and caches | and from lumbermen‘s camps. It is! too bad that this mean form of theft should occur. Recently lumber, stoves and a quantity of paint were stolen| from Kreisler‘s camp on the Coniagas‘ property at Cobalt. On his return from | a trip to the North, Mr. Kreisier found his camp had been broken into and the goods taken. ' This item is from The Sudbury Star of last week:â€"*"Scantily clad and no place to go, unable to get work and in need of food, Allan Kingston and AIâ€" ber tPhilion were both anxious to get the friendly shelter of Burwash ana pleaded guilty as voluntary vagrants. Each was given a three months‘ term." Items like this are scarcely a creditable comâ€" mentary on the boasted civilization of toâ€"day,â€"the jail is the only refuge in this country for the innocents who are unfortunate. At last week‘s meeting of the Cubalt Kiwanis Club, the new officers of the Silver Town‘s Kiwanis Club were duly installed. The new president is Dr. H. H. Abell, T. J. Haughton is viceâ€"presiâ€" dent, R. S. Taylor is again secretary and Frank Murray remains as treasurâ€" er. Larry Stadeiman, the retiring preâ€" sident, was made the recipient of a past presidaent‘s button. There was a merry old time at Sudâ€" bury last week when two policemen atâ€" tempted to investigate a pitcher they thought had alcohol in it, while they were serving a summons on one of the occupants of the house. One man, after demanding a search warrant, started a scuffie with one of the officers and two women in the house are alleged to have hit, bit and scratched the offiâ€" cers. Two more police were telephoned for and the men and the two women were eventually locked up. They were remanded to this week on charges of obstructing the police, assault, etc. ~â€"HMCAL.F d ~ dn drttbctatint Ave., Timmins. For right party, terms canâ€"be arranged. Box 869 Timmins, F. M. If a man came into your house, slapped the faces of your children, attempted to break up the furniture, and abused all the occupants of the house because he said the food and the furnishings should be in Russian style, what would you think of the byâ€"stander who would say, when you objected to such an evil attitude on the part of the visitor, "Ah, where is your British hospitality?" The man who permits his guests to smash his house is not hospitable. He is simply plain foolish! This is the land of gold! But these days it is also the land of diamonds! Millions upon millions of diamonds glisten on the roads, the walks, the yards. On the gripping cold days when the sun shines, the diamonds in the snow may be seen in all their sparkling beauty. No one who has seen theis jewelry of the snow, no one who has watched the Northern Lights play across a North Land sky, or noted the grace of the trees in winter as in summer, can ever believe that this country is anything but a land of beauty not quite equalled elsewhere. A good New Year‘s resolution for all business places in town would have been to resolve to close their stores every Wednesday afternoon all the year round. Some of the sults. It is a benefit to merchants and their clerks and practically no inconvenience to the public. The halfâ€"holiâ€" business places are following the plan with satistactory reâ€" day makes a break in the long hours of the staffs of stores and the increased efficiency and interest that comes to the staffs is a benefit to the stores and the public alike. Every days is a new year, and it is not too late to add the benefit of the halfâ€"holiday each week to the blessings that are comâ€" ing in 1929. "Workers have to pay for such pranks," is one comment| M by a Finnish newspaper, The Finnish American, published !¢" at Fitchburg, Mass., in referring to the recent articles in Y° "Vapaus," the Finnish paper printed at Sudbury. The Finâ€" nish American refers to another incident as an illustration‘ .‘ of how the workers are forced to pay for the tricks of thosei tin who exploit them. This was the case of a Finnish newsâ€"| a paper at Worcester, Mass. ,this paper printing a story about‘ 56 a Congregational minister something along the same line' I as one printed in a Canadian Finnish newspaper about a| be United Church minister at Kirkland Lake. The Congregaâ€";| da; tional minister started a suit of libel, and won. It cost the| 1 Finnish paper some $30,000, and this amount was collected | from the workers by means that The Finnish Amercian did| not consider altogether desirable. The workers should make, the exploiters pay for their own pranks. 1 ng ne man FURNITURE FOR SALEâ€"Radio table, warrant, l dressing table, etc. Apâ€" e officers: ply to 37 Kirby Ave. S The New Liskeard Speaker last week, _ Hamilton Block, Timmins, Ont. says : â€" Phone 501 P. One wellâ€"known resident of the Temagami district, a man who has livâ€" ed there for years, has alâ€" ready won one wager about tnce weather and has taken up a second. He bet a friend that cars would be running on the Ferguson highway up to New Year‘s Day, and he collected on that; now, he has backed with his money his view that there will be less snow this winter than in any year of the past eight.
