TRIBUTE TO THE MEN WHQ WORK IN MINES OF NORTB B.â€"Rino Fables, Leo Montigny, Edward Spraggs, Olive Miller. _ Câ€"Sophie Donylchuk, Hazel Hanâ€" nah Mikeal Grentz, Noble Cousineau. Men Showed Wonderful Spirit and Courage in Recent Dissaster. ‘‘On the other hand, when volunâ€" teersswere needed to go down the mine in an attempt to rescue the entrapped men, the rescue parties were literally overmanned by workmen and officials, anxious to be of service. One of the touching scenes < in connection with the whole tragedy is said to ‘have been the.spectacle which occurred when the first instalment of resecue apparatus arrived. .. ‘"At one end of the machine shop,‘‘ said an eye witness who is closely conâ€" nected wth officialdom, ""I saw someâ€" thing which raised a lump in my throat. with smoke and poisâ€" onous gases still literally belching from the mine, were gbout thirty miners of every natlonahfty, each one trying to persuade the men in charge of the apparatus ‘"how good he was and actually pleading for a chance to go down the mine to rescue his comâ€" rades.‘‘ In an editorial article last. week The Sudbury Star pays the following trbute to the men who work=at the mines. of the North Land :â€" ‘*An arresting and amazing tribute to the character of the average man who works underground in the mines of Nonthern Ontario was reyealed last week when it was disclosed that an examination of all records in conâ€" nection with the recent Hollinger disâ€" aster fails to uncover a. single inâ€" stance where a miner or underground man raised the yellow flag. Officials of the mine and rescue crews alike unite in stating that not a single inâ€" dividual is known to have shown signs of fear in the face of emergency or tried to save hmiself at the expense of someone else. «‘Once again let it be emphasized, mining is a hazardous occupation. It is ‘hazardous from every standpoint. The man who speculates his wealth is running a hazard that is only surâ€" passed by the men who hazard their lives. ‘The life of a miner is one of constant contact with possible death, from the time he steps on the cage and thrusts his life to the strands of a cable, until he steps off the cage again at the end of his shift. In the interâ€" val he handles death every hour of the day in the form of dynamite which he works with a coolHly as a clerk might handle a pen.. Walking/ along the transport ways he sees t{xe red light fiash and steps aside while a car load of explosives whizzes by. There are many times in the course of a day‘s work that a false step or a false move would bring his life into inâ€" stant danger. ‘*Such experience breeds a spirit of fatalism among miners that in warâ€" time is described in more splendid terms as heroism. â€" No other spirit could haveâ€"made it possible for 2,500 odd miners, representing a dozen naâ€" tionalities, to come through the Holâ€" linger dlsaster with records 100 per cent. clean,‘ A number of curlers from Timmins visited Iroquois Falls on Friday last and report a very delightfui time. The Iroquots Falls curlers saw to it that the virsitors were well used and that they enjoyed the visit.fully. In the evening the visitifig curlers had the pleasure of seeing the hockey match between Iroquois ‘Falls and Smeit Ste, Marie, most of the cuxlers coming home again on the hockey speâ€" cial.
