Famiâ€" ly Have to Escape in Night Clothes Word from Hearst last week tel]s; of a fire that took place at a home about five miles from Hearst. The lady of the house, Mrs. Vandette had. just gotten up to prepare breakfast and attempted to get a fire going too speedily. For this purpose she used coal oil, and there was the resulting explosion that ocurs soâ€" frequently when coal oil is used for fireâ€"lighting. In a minute the whole house seemed to be on fire. There were five childâ€" ren in the house and Mrs. Vandette had no time to properly dress herself or the children. It took her utmost effort to rescue the children and get them out of the burning house. _ In the work of reseue Mrs. Vandette was badly burned, and is now in the hospital. The children were practiâ€" cally uninjured by the fire, but sufferâ€" ed much from the cold and exposure, though it is not thought tHhat they will be permanently hurt by their terâ€" rible experience. The flames spread with such rapidity that apart from the saving of the children, Mrs. Vanâ€" dette was not able to rescue anything else from the flames, and the house burned down to the ground. Neighâ€" bours seeing the fire came along with help and the family was taken to Hearst as soon as possible and all possible care and attention given them. At the time of the fire Mr. Vandette was away from home on business. Just as a warning the case of Elton Stewart, of Calgery, may be cited. Stewart was last week sentenced to six months definite and six months indeterminate at the industrial farm. He had posed as a married mans with four children and had been given food, clothing and other help. As a matter of fact he had come alone to Sudbury after a woman he desceribâ€" ed as his housekeeper, and had been living for some time on the assistance won bx his pitiful stories. * PP PA C P P pire : l PS l DP C J. ffl[fl VERKER PASSES â€" AWAY FROM HEART FAILURE Wellâ€"known Official of the Arthur E _ Moysey Co., Called Suddenly by Death On Thursday evening last at his home in Toronto, Mr. J. Fred Verner, of the head office staff of the Axthur E. Moysey Co., stock brokers, passed away suddenly from heart farlure. He had been apparent good health during the day. and collapsed sudâ€" denly just as he reached home after the day‘s work. The late Fred Verner had wide cirâ€" cles of friends in the North Land, where he was well known and highly regarded. He was an authority on mining matters and for some time past had been in charge of the pubâ€" licity department of A. E. Moysey Co. In his work he gave intelligent and helpful publicity for this North Land, and his able pen was of benefit on many occasions to the mining inâ€" dustry and the mining areas, includâ€" ing this Poreupine camp. The late Mr. Verner was born in Inniskillen, Ixreland, coming to Canaâ€" da with his parents when a few years of age. He was educated in Toronto, attending Upper Canada College. He started in newspaper work in Toronto ahout 30 years ago, and went to New York, where he became a member of the New York World staff. Upon his return to Toronto he specialized in musical and dramatic eriticism on the old News. With the opening of the Cobalt camp he interested himself in mining. Mr. Verner was an enthusiastic @rler and golfer, an active member of the Dufferin School Old Boys‘ Asâ€" sociation, and promixe@ent in Masonic circles. He was a member of the Granite Club, the Thistledown GoIf Club, and an officer of Rameses Temple Mystic Shyriners. In other fraternal and social circles he was also prominâ€" ent, and his circles of friends were as wide as his large acquaintanceship. The funeral took place on Monday from Christ Church, Toronto, to St. James‘ cemetery. And then there is the glue maker who went home and pasted his wife. Montreal skiâ€"jumper, who will repâ€" resent Canada at the Olympic skiâ€"ing contests to be held in Switzerland early in the new year.
