According to the evidence of the three children of the accused, the father had threatened them with the direst consequences if they let anyone know what had been going on. One of the children had sent a note to the police at Hearst complaining of the treatment received and this led to an investigation, and the laying of the charges. After the one charge had resulted in a verdict of gulty being returned, the Crown did not press the charge in connection with the fifteen«yearâ€"old daughter. At the close of the sessions Judge Caron sentenced Lefebvre to fourteen years of imprisonment at Kingston, at the same time commenting on the hideâ€" ousness of the crime. Crown Attorâ€" ney 8. A. Caldbick conducted the case for the Crown in able way, while Mr. W. 0. Langdon made as good a deâ€" fence as was possible for the accused. On a charge of wounding and doing grievous bodily harm to John Wilâ€" liamaa, the jury found Avril Saari guilty, and Judge Caron imposed a term of not less than three months nor more than eighteen months at Burwash. The stabbing affray took place at a pulp camp, some seven miles from Connaught, on Oct. 27th. Williamaa was for three weeks in the Dr. Day hospital at Connaught as a result of the injuries received, and is understood to ‘be still affected to a small extent by the wounds. From the evidence it would appear that Williamaa and Saari had a quarrel while drinking together after a wrestâ€" ling match in which Williamaa was worsted by Saari. A fistic battle finâ€" ally ensued. Williamaa was the heavier man, and Saari in holding up his end picked up a knife from a winâ€" dow sill and jabbed Williamaa in the chest, the left side and below the left shoulder. Dr. Day described the naâ€" ture of the wounds, one of which piereed one of the lungs. Williamaa was;taken to Dr. Day‘s hospital at Connaught immediately after the stabbing and it would appear that the At the general sessions at Cochrane last week the heaviest terms of imâ€" prisonment imposed were upon E. Leâ€" febvre, of Hearst, charged with inâ€" cest, and on Avril Saari, on a charge of wounding and inflicting grievous bodily harm on a fellowâ€"countryman, John Williamaa. Have your Household Effects sold at GOVERNMENT WORKING TC CONSERVE FOREST WEALTH tages to be obtained from the mere existence of tracts of wooded land in the settled portions of the Proâ€" vince, Hon. William Finlayson, the Minister of Lands Forests, spoke in his recent address to the Canadian Club of . London. Mr. Finlayson reâ€" ferred to the disappearance of the hardwood forests that formerly clothâ€" ed a large part of western Ontario, and of the depletion of the pine forâ€" ests of ‘‘old‘‘ Ontario. He urged that advantage be taken of the opporâ€" tunities the Ontario Governmert oifers to individuals and municipalities to enlarge the woodland areas of that part of the Province. ‘*‘The Ontario (¢tovernment now has five forestry stations. It established some if not all of these partly for the purpose of demonstrating a method of overcoming conditions caused hy the removal of trees from a district. It founded the station in Norfolk Counâ€" ty to show that the planting of trees would check the encroachment of drifting sands on arable lands. It opened another station in the eastern part of the Province with the same idea in mind. Now it has in the forâ€" estry stations sources of supplies of young trees for planting in the Proâ€" vince. It is able under the authoriâ€" ty of statutes of the Legislature to use these supplies of young trees to help farmers to plant woodlots on land not suited for the cultivation of annual crops, or to plant shelter belts to protect their homes and farm buldâ€" ings from the winds. From the forâ€" estry stations the Department of Forâ€" estry has now from eight to nine milâ€" lion young trees for distribution anâ€" nually, and it hopes in the future to have twenty millions. In this way it is enabled not only to offer trees to individual landowners, but also to assist municipalities to plant demonâ€" stration forests to beautify the landâ€" seape, to protect water supplies and eventually to <produce timber and wood for sale. Forty townships have accepted the Government‘s offer and five counties have allied themselves with the Government in the work of establishing larger forests of one thousand acres each or more. _ The Provincial Government, too, has been studying the larger problem of pulpâ€" wood and other timber. At the last session of the Legislature the Governâ€" ment procured the enactment of legisâ€" lation authorizing it to enter into arâ€" rangements faonr the acquisition of large tracts of land that are unsuited for agriculture but that can be utilizâ€" The Advance has referred to a reâ€" cent address at London where Hon. Mr. Finlayson dealt in "detail with the forestry problems of Ontario,â€"a matter in which the North Land has a very vital concern. It may be adâ€" mitted that for this immediate disâ€" trict the mining industry is the mainâ€" stay of the country, but at the same time, lumbering is of such prime imâ€" portance that everyone should be inâ€" terested in this line. The forest inâ€" dustry is one of the three basic inâ€" dustries upon which the North Land rests. When Mr. Alee Dewar, of Iroquois Falls, was president of the Associated Boards of Trade, he used every occasion both here and in the south to emphasize the fact that forest, mine and farm formed the great triangle base of this great counâ€" try and its progress. While all may not agree with his placing of the forestry industries first and foremost all will certainly agree after considerâ€" ation that the forestry question is so undeniably important that it can not be overlooked. It is not only necesâ€" sary that people in this North should study the matter, and give the Deâ€" partment of Lands Forests every coâ€"operation and support in the good efforts (being made for the country‘s advantage in this particular, but keen interest must be roused also in the South. For this reason it is pleasing indeed to see The Toronto Mail Empire devoting almost a column to the editorial discussion of forestry matters. The Mail Empire says :â€" ‘‘Of the returns that Ontario has derived from the exploitation of its timber resources and of the advanâ€" Ontario Department of Lands and Forests Facing Problems with Courage and Intelligence THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO Electrical Repairs The Geo. During the month in which the Timmins interests held the option exâ€" tensive tests were made at different places on the claims, but no diamond drilling was done. _ The terms were somewhat similar to those given to the Nipissing interests, which conâ€" trolled the claims some time ‘before the Timmins people took an interest in it. Kozak got a substantial payâ€" ment and a considerable block of stock, and Timmins undertook to spend quite a sum each month in exâ€" ploration work. The deal for the Koâ€" zak option was made by the Timmins interests through the firm of Alderâ€" son, Mackay and Armstrong, of Montâ€" real, and immediately upon its concluâ€" sion, Mining Engineer A. He pointed out that under present conditions the timber resources of the Province were not inâ€" exhaustible, and intimated that exâ€" penditures of money would be requirâ€" The North Bay Nlaget last week Ssays :â€" Some week ago The Advance made reference to option taken in the Goudreau district by the N. A. Timâ€" mins interests. It was expected that following this option there would be very general activity in the area: ed to keep Ontario a timberâ€"producâ€" ing country. Most people will agree with him that an expenditure of money will ‘be justified if it procures the means of maintaining timber and pulpwood supplies in Ontario and preâ€" serving the lumbering industries and those other great industries that are dependent upon the forests for their raw materials."" ‘‘A solemn wedding was solemnâ€" ized at 5.30 Monday morning in St. Vincent de Paul Church when Rose, fourth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernâ€" est Gauthier, became the bride of Cleo, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Peltier. The bride was given in marriage ~by her father and looked charming in a beige crepe dress with hat and coat to match. After a breakfast served at the home of the groom‘s parents, Wylde street, the young couple left on the early train for Timmins and points north. The bride‘s parents entertained the immeâ€" diate friends and relatives Sunday evening at a fowl dinner. The many beautiful gifts received by the young couple denotes the high esteem in which they are held."" There are indications on every hand these days of the w idespread interest in mining and the mining market. One of the specially interesting indiâ€" cations was given last week when a Port Arthur church decided to raffle shares of a mining stock at a bazaar being held in aid of the chureh. As each â€" person enters the bazaar, a ticket will be received, bearing a number which entitles the holder to a chance on 100 shares of paidâ€"up stock in an Ontario mining enterpriseâ€"numbers to be drawn later. At a meeting held to decide on prizes the suggestion was made that mining shares would proâ€" vide excellent rewards. The idea did not meet with immediate approval, but a canvass of those present reâ€" vealed that 60 per cent. were proud (more or less) possessors of various mining shares. The question then reâ€" solved into what stock would be offered. It was settled that the stock which showed the largest gain overnight would be chosen. The following morning the shares of Potterdoal had taken a jump of almost 25 per cent., and this was the selection. The holâ€" der of the lucky number will, thereâ€" fore, received 100 paid up shares of Potterdoal, a stock which is already widely held at Port Arthur, as well as elsewhere.
