Question Discussed with Minister of Mines, Premier and Local Member. Miners‘ Union Takes up Matter of Silicosis\Compensation .000000.000 00 00.0 .0000000..0000.00900000 ’0.’00'0"000000 .’.00000’0.00’ THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS. ONTARIO Whereas, we the members of the Timmins Unit, Mine Workers‘ Union of Canada, believe that certain aâ€" mendments to the Workmen‘s Comâ€" pensation Act are‘necessary in order to protect all underground workers who have, or may contract, that disease known as silicosis, and that such aâ€" mendmenits as proposed are reasonâ€" able. To the Editor Poreupine Advance, Timmins, Ont. And be it further resolved that ithe Provincial Government be asked to establish a Medical Board for the periodical examination of all mine workers in lieu of the present system whereby doctors employed by the mines have authority to make xeports to the Board. And be it further resolved that the Provincial . Gvernment be asked to petition the Federal Govenment to take immediate steps for the estabâ€" lishment of a Federal Commussion to détermine the responsibility of the said Federal Govenment in relation to Silicosis and Compensation amongst mine workers in the various Provinces of the Dominion. silicosis problem. _ The Government has also gone, perhaps, as far as pracâ€" tical for the moment, but nothing is to 'be lost and much may be achieved by friendly consideration. The Governâ€" ment has remarked on the coâ€"operaâ€" tion given by the mine nranagements in the efforts to overeome the situaâ€" tion and conquer silicosis. If the complete coâ€"operation of mines, Govâ€" ernment and men can be achieved,, there is little doubt but that eventiaâ€" ally silicosis will be no longer a seériâ€" ous menace, and the very best solution will result for all concerned. The 5â€"year clause is no douwbt deâ€" signed to protect Ontario from being made to carry the burden that should be borne by other provinces. _ For this reason it is not likely to be alterâ€" ed at present, but in this respect the suggestion relative to the Federal reâ€" sponsibility is well worth consideraâ€" tion. The burden of silicosis is no less real to the worker, no matter what province the disease may have been contracted. _ In handling the problem the coâ€"operation of the Doâ€" minion seems essential, The Province of Ontario and the mines of Ontario have gone far in tackling the problem. They have set an example to the Doâ€" minion Government> The next adâ€" vance may come from Federal interest in the matter. | mm ommc w m im oo m n ons In the meantime, it is not discourâ€" aging to know that the Ontario Govâ€" ernment, the mines and the men emâ€" ployed are seriously studying, from different angles, perhaps, but still in earnest way, to overcome the silicosis menace. â€" The following letter was reâ€" ceived this week by The Advance from the Timmins Unit of the Mine Workâ€" ers of Canada, and is given im full, as received :â€" The resolutions outlined have been forwarded to the Hon. Howard Ferâ€" guson, the Hon. Chas. MeCrea, and Mr. A. F. Kenning, M.L.A. And further, that in relation to Section 100, Clause 7a, Paragraph 2¢, Page 53, the rate of compensation be increased from $1000, to $1750 or as a alternative ito pay the existing rate reâ€" lative to total disability under Section 37, Page 28 Bo it therefore resolved: that the Provincial Government of Ontario be asked to increase the amount of comâ€" pensation from $500 to $1000 in reâ€" lation to Section 100, Clause 7a, Paraâ€" graph 2b, Page 53, Workmen‘s Comâ€" pensation Act, 1926, or as an alternaâ€" tive, to pay the existing rates as outâ€" lined in Section 38, Clause 1, Page 29 Timmins, March 29th, 1927 Buchanan can also play halfâ€"back ; Muirhead also plays forward.
