Sunday evening, after the euurch services, the Goldfields Theatre was well filled for the ‘‘Cornish Night" programme, which was under the diréction of Bandsman W. 8. Johns. The programme as provided was a genuine musical treat, every number being interesting and pleasing and some of them being of outstanding excellence. On account of illness aâ€" mong the artists, some of the numbers announced had to be omitted, but a firstâ€"class programme was presented and all lovers of »*good music were well pleased indeed. ‘ Bandmaster Wolno and his bandsâ€" men did themselves proud, the band numbers being given with a talent and furnish that won many compliâ€" ments and hearty applause. _ The selections were attractive in themâ€" selves and were specially well preâ€" sented. The band numbers included : March, ‘‘Red (Gountlet‘‘; selection, ‘*Melodious Gems‘"‘; overture, *‘ Oberâ€" BARBER SHOP velestedtp» Basement, Gordon Block The piano solo by Mrs. Wilkins was an outstanding number and delighted all. Mrs. Wilkins is an musician of rare ability and her finished work at the piano Sunday evening, both in her pianoforte solos and as accomâ€" panist, was greatly appreciated. The tenor solo, ‘‘Friend o0‘ Mine,"‘ was exceptionally well given by Mr. A. Jenkin and won very decided reâ€" call, his responding number ‘being another favourite on the programme. Mr. Jenkin has a pleasing tenor voice and sings with feeling and effect. The readings and recitations by Mr. P. Varkar, of the Dome, were specially popular hits and delighted the audience. Mr. Varkar has rare skill as an elocutionist and his diaâ€" lect numbers were especially. talentâ€" ed. He has a, triendly, analfected way that immediately wins the audiâ€" ence. His opening nuimber, ‘‘Only a Dream,‘‘ with musical effects, was specially appreciated. This selection included verses from famous khymns and the audience joined in the singâ€" ing. \The effect was particularly pleasing, many fine voices ibeing notâ€" ed in the audience, one outstanding soprano of special sweetness and rich tone catching the nleased attention of many. ‘« 2 * Baths at all hours while the . shop is open. Johnston‘s talented work as acâ€" companist, this selection had partiâ€" cular appeal to all who enjoy gifted choral work. Last, but by no means least, may be mentioned the solo by Mr. K. THE RIGHT WAY TO FIGHT THE MAIL ORDER HOUSES. The next band concert will he on Sunday evening, Oct. 24th, after the church services, and will likely be ‘‘Lancashire Night.‘‘ â€" 3 Mr. I. E. Pedlow, general dry goods merchant and importer, of Renâ€" #rew, Ont., is one of the most successâ€" ful busitress men of Ontario. He has built up an unusual business for a town like Renfrew, and he himself credits his success to two factors that he would likely link as oneâ€" good business principle, and advertisâ€" ing. Mr. Pedlow neverâ€"had any use for those shortâ€"sighted folks who wanted merchants to try to counteract the mail order houses by raising the sentiment or loyalty ery. Mr. Pedâ€" low himself was always an ardent loyalist so far as Renfrew was conâ€" cerned, but he argued that no selfâ€" respecting merchant wanted to make anything approaching a charity apâ€" peal. ‘""It isn‘t good business,"‘ he said. The fact was, he argued, that the average town merchant could, and did, beat the mail order prices for the same quality~of goods. Where the average merchant fell down was in failing to tell the public about it. * must advertise,‘‘ he said * and you will find the catalogue houses soon throwing up their hands in surâ€" render when you turn on them their own type of rapidâ€"fire gunsâ€"live adâ€" vertising.‘‘ T‘wenty years ago, Mr. Pedlow fought and beat the mail order houses w1th their own weapon of advertisâ€" ing. ‘"‘It isn‘t a matter of symâ€" patln or sentiment or anything else. It‘s sound common sense. Here are the facts. Here are the prices. Can the mail order houses equal these?"" That is the way Mr. Pedlow adverâ€" tised. And he advertised generously. Timothy Eaton had nothing on I. E. Pedlow when it came to regular fullâ€" page advertising every week in the local paper. And Mr. Pedlow made it all pay. And he‘s still at it. Here is a paraâ€" graph from the last issue of The Barrie Examiner:â€" ‘‘Last week‘s Renfrew Mereury carried an advertisement that is worthy of the perusal of every retail merchant who feels the effect of the catalogue competition of the big city stores. In this advertisement, Mr. Pedlow (the man who put his busiâ€" ness on a strictly eash basis some years ato, holding that the people could pay cash to him as well as to the mail order house) gives a large number of items with his own price and the mail order eatalogue price in each case. The saving on the items if purchased in Pedlow‘s runs from 2.14 to 75 per cent., the average savâ€" ing on the items quoted being over 23 per cent. Mr. Pedlow states that hundreds of others equally convineing could be quoted. In order that there might be no doubt as to the accuracy of the figures and the fairness of the comparisons, a note is appended to the advertisement by the editor of the Mercury stating that, by request, he investigated the claims and certified them correct. Mr. Pedlow is taking an effective means of fighting city competition. Not only does he careâ€" THE +PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO. TORONTO KIWANIS LOOX FORWARO 1O VISIT HERE Will be Here Oct. 22nd, with New President for District. Report of District Convention There was no special speaker for the Kiwanis luncheon on Monday, but the report of the District Convention for Ontario and Quebec as held at Toronto recently was given by Mr. Jos. Weston, and proved unusually interesting and effective. Mr. Wesâ€" ton spoke of the various activities of the Kiwanis Clubs, with particular mention of the Boys‘ School moveâ€" ment and the sincere interest taken in this Government plan by the Kiâ€" wanis. Mr. Weston said that one of the specially interesting features of the convention was the presence of a group of Indians from fBault Ste Marie. These had honoured the new president for Ontario and Quebec disâ€" trict, Mr. W. Cockburn, by electing him a member of their tribe. They had also presented him with a beauâ€" tiful beaded tunic. The next district convention will be held at London, Letters from Toronto showed that the Kiwanis there are looking forâ€" ward with great interest to their visit to Timmins on October 22nd. They expect to come here a hundred strong and there will of course be a big time. The new President for Ontario and Quebee, Mr. Wm. Cockburn, is exâ€" pected to be among the visitors on the occasion. It was decided to have the Tuxis boys, winners of the junior football medals given by the Kiwanis, as guests of the club at an early date when the medals will be formally preâ€" sented. Mr. Bellsham was for a numâ€" ber of years a leading business man of the Silver Town, but has had conâ€" siderable ill luck at Cobalt, suffering no less than two robberies and being burned out five times, in each case the indifference or carelessness of others being very evidently to blams for this misfortune. _ Mr. Bellsham has just returned from a trip to the far W est, and is here with a view to locating in Timmins as the most prosâ€" perous and promising town in this North Land. Mr. Bellsham is underâ€" stood to be negotiating for the purâ€" terest. Mr. Bellsham has many interesting impressions to give relative to his recent visit to the West. Vancouver he classes as the richest and most prosperousâ€"appearing city of the vreat West. _ It exceeds Victoria in its wealth and progress. Edmonton, he thought, was much like Vancouver in many respects, and its evident prosperity and promise were most attractive. On his visit West, Mr. Bellsham was greatly impressed wth the sobrieâ€" ty and orderliness of the many towns and cities visited. He summed up his ideas on the whole temperance question with these words:â€""I saw more drunkenness in Cobalt the three days before I left Cobalt than I did the whole time I spent in the West." Mr. Bellsham is very sincerely of the belief that Government control is a much more effective and reasonable way to handle the liquor question than any specms of legislation such as the 0.
