Understood to Have Counted Out of Bidding in Previous Case. According to a despatch from Cochâ€" ‘ane this week, another sale of leases on Northern Ontario timber lands will be held in October when hbids will be opened by the Department of Lands and Forests for timber in "the township of Buff, Ottawa and Marâ€" ven, about 20 miles west and 20 miles north from Cochrane. The total area comprises approximately 140 square miles, most of which is well timbered with spruce. The dimits lie contiâ€" guous to those held, by Mattagami Pulp and Paper Company. The terms of sale include a deposit of $25.000 in the case of the first two townshmips and a deposit of $20,000 along with other undertakings in the case of Marvin township. On Octoâ€" ber 11, the first mortgage holders of the Mattagamit Pulp and Paper Co. are causing the assets of this comâ€" pany to be sold at auction including some 1,500 square miles of timber limits obtained from the Ontario Govâ€" ernment by the defuncet company. The second mortzgage holders are presuâ€" mably laying plans for a bid an the assets including these leases. It is generally Anown that last fall when the Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper Company obtained the leases in conâ€" nection with its present operations at Kapuskasing, at least two bids were made by interests connected with the Mattagami Pulp Co. for the area conâ€" tÂ¥suous to and agjoining the Mattaâ€" gami limits which were higher than the Spruce Falls bid.. Owing to the pledges of Ontario ministers that no consideration would be given the Matâ€" tagami attempts to assign or secure additional limits until debts to settâ€" lers had been paid or guaranteed, these bids, it is understood, were reâ€" fused. _ Public opinion, in Northern Ontario is heartily in accord with the Government‘s action and there is considerable interest now as to what the Government‘s attitude will be toâ€" ward the transfer or assignment of the existing Mattagami limits to the purchasers at the sale on October 11. The general opinion here is that the Government will continue its attitude of looking first to the interests of the settlers and using every lawful means in its power to obstruct any plans that include any neglect of theé settâ€" lers and their rights.
