NEW BYâ€"LAW MAKES THIRD AVENUE THROUSH STREE! l’lll\/’ Â¥ EL T. MJ ho \.u ® 7 ate Â¥ 0 e alle s 2628 M W Mr. A. McDonald asked pernnssmn of council to erect a taxi office for his own use near the station. The matâ€" ter was referred to the Police Comâ€" mittee and the Board of Works. A letter from the Provincial Seeâ€" retary‘s Department was considered in regard to assistance in financing the erection of a new Jdll and mum- cipal building. Earlier in the year the present council had pxactlcally turned down the offer of the Departâ€" ment for coâ€"operation in the erection of a new jail and municipal building. The clerk was instructed to write the Provincial Secretary‘s Department calling attention to the fget that the prévious letter had been answered but no reply to it had been recéived, here. The . Provincial Secretary‘s Dept. had practically asked Timmins to say what it was ready to do in the matter as a new jail was badly needâ€" ed at Timmins. The council had takâ€" en the stand that the town could not afford to go into building municipal buildings tlns year. Councfllor Epâ€" lett had opposed even askint the Deâ€" partment what they were read\ to do, but Councillors Longmore, Drew and Bacon had stressed the fact that the idea of the Department in the matter should be obtained, as it would cost nothing to find out and would not oblivate the town. Some rebates in water rates were granted where the water not been used. Instructions were given the Town Engineer authorizing the purchase of pipe, valves, ete., for work in town. On motion of Councillors Bacon and Drew the clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the construction of sewers and waterworks as per Byâ€" laws 319 and 320. Byâ€"laws â€" forâ€" waterworks ~extenâ€" sions, sewers, cement: walks, etc., were formally passed in accerdance with previous decisions by the counâ€" cil. The byâ€"law making Third avenâ€" ue a through street and the byâ€"law forbidding the use of sirens on veâ€" hicles were also duly read a third time and passed. Routine accounts, payrolls, were passed for payment. One of the Items of Business at Last Meeting of Town Council. Other Resolutions Passed. The chief item of business at the meeting of the town council on Thursâ€" day last was the diseussion arising from the petition from nearly four hundred ratepayers asking that the services of the present town engineer be retained in the interest of the town. This matter is dealt with at some length elsewhere in this issue. There were a number of other matters beâ€" fore the council some of them of more than passing interest. There was a petition submitted to council, signed by a number of rateâ€" payers, against hmmcr a Wednesday halfâ€"holiday the year round As the petition for a byâ€"law to make the Wednesday â€" early closing a year round affair had not been submitted to council as yet, the counter petition was laid on the table for the present. The clerk was authorized to reâ€" fund $60.00 paid for a house sewer connection, the sewer not being inâ€" stalled. (On motion of Councillors Brennan and Eplett it was decided to make the rock ecut on Fourth avenue 48 feet wide, instead of 39 feet, on east side of Elm street; A rebate on 1925 taxes for exempâ€" tion on three children was referred to solicitors for ruling as to whether it was according to law or not. ONE THIN WOMAN GAINED 10 POUNDS IN 20 DAYS Tt was moved by Councillors Eplett and Brennan, that Mr. Horne be paid $50.00 on account of damage to proâ€" perty from water from the street on Wilson avenue and Preston street. It is in the preâ€"Cambrian â€" formation that the Rand of South Africa, the Mysore Mines of India, and the mines of Aus- tralia are located."‘ These few paragraphs indicate the scope of the booklet when it is reâ€" membered that each section of the North Land of both Ontario and Queâ€" bee is fully dealt with as regards minâ€" ing and power. Among the illustrations, the followâ€" ing titles may be noted:â€"‘‘Abitibi Mills and Iroquois Falls,"‘ ‘Hollinger Gold Mines at Timmins, Poreupine District, Ont.,‘‘ ‘‘General View of the MceIntyreâ€"Poreupine Mines, Limâ€" ited,‘‘ ‘‘International Nickelâ€"Copper Smelters at Copper Cliff, Sudbury District,"‘ ‘*‘Wrightâ€"Hargreaves Mine at Kirkland Lake,"‘ ‘*On the Way to the Red Lake Gold Fields,"‘ ‘‘Red Litke District,"‘ etc. The maps include:â€"Northwestern Quebec_ Copperâ€"Gold area, Chimbougaâ€" mau Lake area, Que., Sudbury Goldâ€" Silverâ€"Nickel. area, Tashotaâ€"Kowkash Mining District, Eastern Manitoba Gold Area, Red Lake, and last, but by no means least, the C.N.R. ‘*Power Map,"‘‘ showing developed and undeâ€" veloped water power resources in the North Land.
