~Coâ€"Operative Marketing, the Organization of Townships, Special Weekâ€"End Rates on the T. N. O., Coal Freight »~â€" Rates, Canada‘s Jubilee Year, and Roads, Roads and Roads, Among the Subjects. Mr. James Sinton, chief engineer of the Department of Northern Deâ€" velopment pointed out to the meeting that the Government had no power to foree townships to organize, but that they were doing everything in their power to encourage them to organize. In view of this information John Clark, of Englehart and E. H. Orser, of Swastika, reâ€"drafted the resolution requesting the Government to enact such legislation as is necessary to eteante stectactectacts Unorganized Townships There was considerable discussion on an item arising out of the minutes regarding the organization of Townâ€" ships. It was pointed out that Townâ€" ships at present failed to organize even when fully settled, being under the impression that they would get less from the Government than if they remained resoluâ€" tion at the previous meeting of the Boards was that such Townships should be forced to organize. It was also pointed out by one of the doleâ€" gates that an organized Township would get more money from the (Goâ€" vernment than an unorganized one, they would get dollar tor every dolâ€" lar spent on ~roads ete. t # *s #* # # *4 L d *4 # .# ## ## # # #4 *, # #* SA o *o 00}0’»’00‘ * "® ~% # “. #¢ *# * ## + + # “:“o ## # *# #* ## @ «# ## # # # ". ## *# Li #4 *# # #4 # L3 ## *# + #* # L ## # < #* 4. #. _# * " ## *# # #4 ## *# ~ #* # # ## # 4 #4 + J #4 # + #* @ L3 ##* +. 4 #4 # 4 #4, # ##4 # w #+4 + ,@ In the discussion Donald MeBachâ€" ren of Cobalt thought that an abattoir in the North Country was urgently needed and it was agreed that this should be laid also beftore the. Whereas the agricultural area of Northern Ontario already produces a surplus of farm products and is capâ€" able of tremendous extension and whereas there are situated throughâ€" out the North large consuming indusâ€" trial plants requiring farm produce in quantities and because it would be to the advantage of all to bring the Northern producer and the consumer as closely together as possible, be it resolved that we ask the Ontario (Goâ€" vernment to extend to a General Coâ€" operative Marketing organization the same terms and conditions as now apâ€" ply to certain Coâ€"operative Creamâ€" eries,. Among the matters dealt the meeting were the following.â€"â€" Coâ€"operative Marketing A resolution introduced by John Vanier, of TIroquois Falls in regard to bringing the farmer and the purâ€" chaser of farm products closer toâ€" gether was discussed at considerable Ienfl'th and C. W. Wright of Engleâ€" hdl‘ made a suggestion that a orgaâ€" nization for the disposal of farm proâ€" duce be formed similar to that of the creameriesgs. Mr. Wright and Mr. V anier redrafted the resolution, which in its final form was moved by C. W. Wright and seconded â€"by John Vanier as follows :â€" The quarterly meeting of the Northâ€" ern Ontario Associated \Boards of Trade, held in Haileybury June 28th, and 20th, developed some very imâ€" portant discussions in regard to matâ€" ters of direct interest to the North Country. A resolution from Iroquois Falls in regard to the reduction of motdr liâ€" cense fees was referred back to the Iroquois Falls Board, as the delegates felt that the greatest hardship on automobilists in the North Country was to get insurance or the excessive cost of insurance and. the TIroquois Falls Board was asked to redraft this resolution for the next meeting, bringâ€" Cochrane and South Poreupine, be doâ€" nated for the best bull or cow of any breed at the fair, the cup to be held permanently by the winner. â€" This was seconded by A. Orser of Swastika brought in a resolution that as 1927 will be Canada‘s diamond jubille year and that in Temiskaming and Cochâ€" rane the trunk road connecting with the South will be open, that all Boards of Trade, Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis Clubs and all other organizations of the district be asked to make Dominâ€" ion Day 1927 the greatest day the North country has ever seen. The reâ€" solution was passed and the secretary instructed ~to notify all Municipal Councils, Rotary Clubs, Local and Federal representatives and the Onâ€" tario (Government. Greater Annual Grant. There were some matters discussed at some length left over to the next meeting. _ Several times the Assocâ€" iated Boards have laid before the (Government the necessity of a greater annual expenditure in the North Counâ€" try, which would be in the nature of an investment as returns in revenue would more than justify it. This was referred again to the local boards for discussion, so that a strong resolution supported by details can be brought in at the next meeting in such form as to influence the Government to take action. snn Cups for Cattle In connection with the encourageâ€" ment for agriculture, J. D. MeDonald, of Haileybury, suggested that one of the biggest things that could be done was the encouragement of stock breeding in Northern Ontario and sugâ€" zested a small cup for each of the fairs at New Liskeard, Englehart, Charlton, Matheson, Porquis Junetion, bring about the organization of Townâ€" ships in the Temiskaming and Cochâ€" rane districts that are or will be setâ€" tled up to 50% of the total agriculâ€" tural land. _ Also that all Townships thrown open to settlement should have at least one road North and South and one Eastand West before it is thrown open to settlement. Ask Special Weekâ€"End Rates The Haileybury resolution asking the T. N. 0. to grant return weekâ€" end tickets as at single fare between points on the T. N. 0. to increase travel and a better knowledge of the whole North among the people living in the North, had the thorough apâ€" proval of the meeting. Coal Freight Rates A resolutionâ€"from Iroquois Falls, in regard to Albérta céoal was made by Jolin Vanier and seconded by E. H. Orser. The resolution asked that the (GGovernment make every effort to get the seven dollar rate on Alberta coal again in foree and that it apply to all points on the T. N. 0. which was e.\'clnd(;l from the previous agreeâ€" ment, until such time as the coal: of Northern Ontario is sufficiently deâ€" veloped to be on the market. Aid for Youth of North Another resolution fromâ€" Iroquors Falls was unanimously passed. _ It pointed out that in the three basic industries of the North, mining, forâ€" estry and agriculture, the experts reâ€" quired here had to be brought from other plaees and frequently from abroad. The Government is requested to encourage the youth of Northern Ontario to qualify themselves for such positions either by the granting of scholarships for courses or in any way they thought fit. SA as chairman gave the delegates a warm welcome. The feature of the evening was the splendid address by James SNinton, chief engineer of the Northern â€" Development Department, who dealt with the expenditures of the Province on roads in Northern Onâ€" tario, giving figures showing that durâ€" ing the past year the districts of ‘Teâ€" mwkammn and Cochrane had received 20% of the total amount spent in the eight districts of Northern Ontario. Mr Sinton also answered any quesâ€" tions not only at the meetings but in private conversation, which went to show that the Department was using every effort to develop the road sysâ€" tem of the North, keeping in mind at the same time that all the revenue of the Province could not be expended in that way. On Tuesday evening the delegates were the guests of the Kiwanms Club at Cobalt, when Mr. Hanlan gave a splendid address on agriculture in Northern Ontario, in which without minimising the hard pioneering work which was necessary, he painted a glowing picture of the future of mixed farming in Northern Ontario. Ansonville had a resolution in reâ€" gard to the organization of municiâ€" palities in the North Country someâ€" thing after the style of the County Councils of Southern Ontario. It was pointed out in the discussion that folâ€" lowed that there were only twelve organized municipalities, towns, and townships in the Cochrane Digtrict and of these only two were not reâ€" presented on theâ€" Boards of Trade. In other words, the Boards of Trade was at present a wider organization than the proposed counmcil. The resoâ€" lution was therefore dropped.
