Drivers should exercise the greatest care, and the public should be ever watchful. Yet under the most fayâ€" ourable cireumstances, and despite the createst carefulness, accidents still may occur. In any case the public is entitled to the fullest protection. At present the public has not the proâ€" tection it should have in case of serious accidents. Too often the perâ€" son injured has no remedy or recourse possible for the fact that life must be borne hereafter in maimed or disâ€" abled conditiotl. Hundreds of men have automobiles, and that is perhaps all they hbava, or more. What remeâ€" dS’ has the injured man against the automobilist who buys his car on the instalment plan and who has no seizâ€" able property of value? In addition to the burden of the injyury the unâ€" fortunate man must pay his own medical and hospital bills. The law should fix the responsibility clearly upon the CAR. Every car that traâ€" vels the public roads should be comâ€" pelled to carry indemnity insurance. In case of accident then proper recovâ€" ery of damages would be possible. Such a plan would not make motorists careless; the indemnity insurance companies would see to that. It would not make the public careless either; again the indemnity insurance companies could be depended upon in this regard. Compulsory indemnity insurance would protect the public. For some time past The New Lisâ€" keard Speaker has been earnestly adâ€" vocatingz this measure of protection for the public, and The Advance has beén earnestly supporting the plan. The man who will continue in charge of an automobile while in the slmhtest measure under the influence of liquor is a type of eriminal that should be shown no merey. To opâ€" erate a car toâ€"day requires a clearâ€" headedness and keenness that preâ€" cludes all contact with liquor, and particularly the poisonous. decoctions so common these days. It would appear that no one should be allowed to drive a car without first passing* a (111111it')'i11g examinaâ€" tion and securing a license to drive. Some plan like this seems to be neâ€" cessary in the interests of the publi¢. There are careful examinations now to assure competency in those operatâ€" ing boilers, hoists, etec. Engineers of tlus class menace the safety of few, compared to the number endangered by an incompetent in charge of a motor car. What an uproar would be provoked if it were found that the operator of a boiler or haist were subâ€" ject to seizures that might leave him liable to contribute to fatal accidents! Yet recently excuse was made for the driver of an automobile along this very line, when a death was caused through a car getting out of «@ontrol. There should â€"be rigid laws to provide that all persons operating cars on the public highways are sufticiently skilled to minimize the danger of unâ€" necessary accidents. Compulsory indemnity insurance on every motor car operated is badly needed indeed, for the publie proâ€" tection. This year, however, accidents in this nnmedlate dlstrlct are likely to impress upon the people here the lesâ€" sons that need to he learned in regard to the safety of the public amid the everâ€"increasing automobile traflie., Recently there has been an appalâ€" ling number of automobile accident‘s in this North Land. Men and women have been killed, others have been seriously injured, and there has been great monetary loss through damage done by these automobile aceidents. In years past Timmins has been termâ€" ed ‘lucky‘‘ in being more than orâ€" dinarily free from serious automoâ€" bile mishaps. Good judgment and good sportsmanship on the part of the majority of the motorists, and the careful watchfuiness of an adequate and effective police foree have no doubt had more effect in preventing serious accidents than any mysterious element of fortune or chance.
