George Ham, for nearly a third of a century a sort of Envoy Extraorâ€" dinary for the Canadian Pacific Railâ€" way, died last week at Montreal, old in years but young in heart, worn by life‘s burden but unwearied in spirit. He had the gift of eternal youth,â€" humoriz. To those who knew him the loss iz in his death. To those who missed his acquaintance, the loss was $n their lives, He was a many worth Enowinzg,â€"claver, capable, cheerful, the best of company and the most helpful of friends. For a generation he was the official reception committee of the Canadian Pacific Railway for all visitors to this Dominion. Every distinguished guest coming to Canada in thirty years past met George Ham, was entertained by George Ham, and counted George Ham as a personal friend. He had a wealth of all sorts of attractive knowledge, an everâ€" flowing fund of humour, a neverâ€"failâ€" ing cheerfulness and the happiest colâ€" lection of stories. â€" To all he gave wenerously from his rare treasure bhouse of gifts. Potentates from Asia, immigrants from Europe, scientists, simple folk, small farmers, big busiâ€" ness men, politicians, priests, teachers, children, newspapermen, royalty,â€" all met on common ground in appreâ€" ciating George Ham. They were all the same to George Ham, and he was the same to each and all of them. Born in Trenton in 1847, he saw Canada change and grow and prosper, and his part was no small one in making not only for advancement but for happiness. His was a rare petrâ€" sonality. He was an asset to the railway he served and the country he loved. IMPROPER ATTITUDE SHOWN TOWARDS LAW. One of the chief evils of laws that unnecessarily interfere with personal liberty is that the consequent lack of popular support leads to general disâ€" respect of law. The remedy, however, is for all the people to so respect law that they will refuse to perpetuate laws that can not be respected. Many a man, however, who seorns the Ontario Temperance Act, refused to take the trouble to even vote against it at the time of the plebescite on the question. No section of the O.T.A. should be broken. _ The whole thing should be smashed. Office 26 A Tew York newspaper quotes the wife of one of the Whittemore bandit gang as saying:â€"‘‘I did not know that my husband was a criminal. He gave me lots of money, but I thought he made it selling w hiskey." GEORGE HAM RESTS AFTER MANY WEARING JOURNEYS. Member of the Canadian Weekly Newspapers Association. Thursday, April 22nd, 1926 Originally a newspaperman,â€"and one of the brightest and best of his day,â€"he evidenced his shrewdness by getting into anther line of business. As a register of deeds at Selkirk, Manitoba, many years ago, he gave faithful and careful public service. But he did not like the work. ‘‘I would rather be a registrar of misâ€" g@eeds,‘‘ he said, and back he went to newspaper work. â€" From newspaper work he graduated into the service of the Canadian Pacific Railway Comâ€" pany, and he became one of the great institutions of that great institution. He escorted parties of all kinds across Canada. He was not a guide; he was not a publicity man; he was not an entertainer. He was all these and more. â€" His official position was always a sort of mystery that needed no solyâ€" ing. â€" Once asked as to what his exact position was he replied: **Obh, THURSDAY, APRIL 22nd, 1926 Canada â€" United States Published every Thursday by Owner and Publisher. Subscription Rates: Telephones : Residence 70. $2.00 $3.00 year year a friend telegraphed him in rather eurt manner to come to Winnipeg and address a public meeting there. George Ham‘s telegram in reply was pointed : ‘* Where is Winnipeg? Are the natives Christians or Grits?" Two years ago (George Ham was the prineipal speaker at a banquet at Iroâ€" quois Falls. Every man that heard him, every man that met him, counted (Georzge Ham as a friend. There will be scores of men in this North Land who will feel a genuine personal sorrow in the death of (George Ham. So will it be all through Canâ€" ada and hbeyond the Dominion. Georzge Ham had the rare gift of winâ€" ning friends everywhere. In years he was an old man. In spirit he was young for ever. His happy humour carried him through. And in newsâ€" paper cireles, where he had the staunchest friends, all will hope that the angel at the gate will have huâ€" mour, too, taking George by the hand and drawing him in, and saying :â€"â€" ‘*‘This is no Hebrew Heaven! Enter Ham!‘‘* (George would chuekle over that! And George Ham, who made so many merry in this life has earned the rigcht to his smile in the world to In the last issue of The St. Mary‘s Journalâ€"Argus, of St. Mary‘s, Ont., anâ€" nouncement is made of a change in the ownership of the paper. The matter is of special interest here because the former publisher and present publishâ€" er alike are known to Timmins peoâ€" ple, both having been visitors here of Mrs. Arch CGillies, who is the daughâ€" ter of the former owner and the sisâ€" ter of the new owner. There should also be general interest in the change because The Journalâ€"Argus is so exâ€" cellent a newspaper and has given such valuable service to its town and the Province by virtue of its outâ€" standing ability and enterprise. Unâ€" ter the ownership of Mr,. John W. Eedy, The Journalâ€"Argus has been a powerful influence for good in its community and has added to the standing of town weeklies by being so good a paper. The son, Mr. Lorne A. Eedy, B.A., will no doubt carry on the fine traditions established by his father. The new editor and publisher has shown his ability by the successâ€" ful conduct of The Walkerton Teleâ€" seope. In a message announcing the change Mr. John A. Eedy through natural modesty rather handicaps the son. He says the new owner comes to the task better equipped and more capable that the retiring one. This is difficult to believe, and sets a stanâ€" dard searcely to be reached, for The St. Mary‘s Journalâ€"Argus has been so outstanding a town newspapey that it is difficult to imagine it better. For thirtyâ€"one years Mr. John W. Eedy, with effective pen and earnest effort has laboured for St. Mary‘s and disâ€" trict and built a newspaper business that is something to be proud of. _ All will be sure that Mr. Lorne A. Eedy will worthily carry on the fine work and policies of his father, bringing to the task a wide knowledge, experâ€" ience and culture that will be of high come THE NUISANCE TAXES SHOULD BE FIRST TO GO Changes in the tariff that threaten serious disturbanee of industry in Canada and have already caused exâ€" tended unemployment may catch the votes of the unwary, but the thoughtâ€" ful man will not d‘])pl()\e them. The average man also will give but small thanks for a reduced postal rate at this time. Even the changes in the income tax charges will not be acceptâ€" ed as an unmixed blessing. The inâ€" come tax, at its worst, seems to be the most equitable of all the Governâ€" ment‘s methods of keeping the public humble in a financial way. The inâ€" come tax takes toll from the man who perforce is making money, and it atâ€" tacks him in proportion to what he makes. It "‘tempers the wind to the shorn lamb!*‘ The quotation appears to be an apt one. paper cIrcies, staunchest friend the angel at the mour, too, taking The late George Ham was a writer of merit and interest, many of his historical essays being of decided value. As an afterâ€"dinner speaker he had few equals. His addresses, like his writings, were full of information, philosophy, humour and wit. _ Few men had so choice a fund of happy anecdotes, and none could tell a story with more effectiveness. Probably he will be most affectionately rememberâ€" ed for his spontaneous humour. Once, There are a number of imposts, however, that have been very approâ€" priately temned ‘‘Nuisance Taxes.‘"‘ Some of them, like the Sales Tax, are a heavy burden. They cost the vicâ€" tim more for cost of collection than for the actual tax itself. These are the taxes that should be wiped out first. They burden, annoy and harâ€" ass the people. They do not bring returns to warrant their cost to the eople. They are an annoyance and a curse. â€" They are unfair and absurd. The (Government should do away with them first,.and experiment with postâ€" al rates and income taxes afterwards. soN wWILL CONTINUE THE WORTHY WORK OF FATHER. TUXIS LIKELY TO HAVE FOOTBALL TEAM THIS YEAR The sugzvestion has been made that the Tuxis might come in to take the place of the Town B. team this season. It was felt that this would keep the younger lads in touch with the game and aid in the training of players for days to come. As a consequence, there was a letter from the Tuxis beâ€" fore the meeting of the T. F. C. exeâ€" cutive last Friday evening asking the Timmins Football Club to sponsor the Tuxis team for this season. The exeâ€" cutive viewed the matter very favourâ€" ably, and asked the Tuxis to send a representative to the next meeting of the exeeutive to explain just what they desired and if there was any way in which the Timmins Football Club could help them along.
