The Premier was able to show with ease not only that there was decided need for the expenditures, but also that such expenditures were really profitâ€" able investments so far as the Proâ€" vince is concerned. The Opposition missed the point upon which fair criticism might have been madeâ€"the fact that the approâ€" priation is inadequate in view of the pressing needs. â€" The whole prosperity of the Province hinges on the proâ€" gress of the North Land. During the past few years the develqpment of the North Land has steadied and asâ€" sisted Ontario through trying times. The wealth of the North in minerais, in forests resources and in agriculâ€" tural possibilities may easily mean the greatest measure of prosperity and progress for all Ontario., But to reâ€" ceive such dividends Ontario must make investments. [Phere can be no proper development in this new counâ€" try without roads. The need for roads is so extended, that the problem can only be approached with succeess in terms of big money. â€" The true criticism sof the five million dollar appropriation is that it does not apâ€" proach the problem in a big enough way. â€"With the Government demandâ€" ing of private enterprises the expenâ€" diture of at least eighty million dolâ€" lars in this North in the next two years, the Opposition assuredly would be warranted in requiring the Governâ€" ment to appropriate at least ten milâ€" lion dollars for the development of the North.
