Secretary, Box 1202, Timmins THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO. Board of Trade Discusses )A Freight Rates on Lumber, Etc In the last issue of The Advance space was not available for as exâ€" tended reference as desirable to the proceedings of the annual meeting of the Timmins Board of Trade, held on the 27th. Mr. T. F. King was elected president for 1926 hy acclamation, the selection of the other officers to be left to his selection. Question to be Taken up with the T. N.O. Rates from Timmins Higher than from Other Points Further Away. Still Working for Federal Building for Timâ€" mins. To Assist in Correspondence Course Plan. The chief question diseussed was the matter of the high rates on lumâ€" ber shipped from Timmins. It was shown that the freight rates proved a serious handicap to the lumber inâ€" dustry ‘here. Figures were quoted from the freight tariff sheets indicatâ€" ing that the rate from Timmins to southern points was higher than from other places in the North Land farâ€" ther away than Timmins. For inâ€" stance, the rate to Goderich, Ont., from Mattagami. Heights, is 27% cents, while from Kapuskasing it i3 26 and from Macamic 28 cents. Kapuskasing is 65 miles farther haulâ€" aze than Timmins and Macamic, Que., about 90 miles. To Toronto the rates are:â€"from Mattagami Heights, 25; from Kapuskasing, 24%; from Macâ€" amic, 26. In comparison with the Kapuskasing and Macamic rates Timmins rate to Toronto should not be more than 22% cents. Indeed, it was urged that there should be a reâ€" duction of 2 cents to apply to all Onâ€" tario points from Timmins. . Figures in regard to United States points were equally unfair to Timmins. The ‘Board of Trade had a copy of a letter and a table of comparison of rates submitted to the T. N. O. by the Fesserton Timber Co. The data thus available was endorsed by Mr. F. M. Wallingford, Mr. MeChesney and Mr. Fitzgerald, who were present at the meeting. The importance of the matâ€" ter not only to the lumber industries but to the merchants and the people of the town was made evident, and it was moved by Mr. T. F. King, seconded by Mr. Fitzgerald, and carried, that the lumber interests get together and secure all possitble data in regard to lumber freight rates, the president and secretary of the Board also to obtain any information ‘posâ€" sible, the whole question to be taken up again at the next meeting of the Board of Trade with the idea of preâ€" senting the same to the T. N. O. Commission for adjustment. On motion of G: A. Macdonald, seconded by H. J. Laidlaw, a resoluâ€" tion was passed urging the Governâ€" ment to commence work on the comâ€" ANOTHER OPEN DANCE BY SCHUMACHER CALEDONIANS The Schumacher Caledonian Society will hold an open dance in the Melnâ€" tyre Recreation Hall on Wednesday evening of this week, Feb. 10th. Best of music and a good time assured to all. \J t The first motor sleigh to make the trip from Chiminis to Rouyn and reâ€" turn went the course on Friday last. Two or three passengers were safely taken to Rouyn, and Mr. Harold Webb and another were the passengers on the return trip. The distance was made in a little over four hours. The motor sleigh was a Ford with caterâ€" pillar arrangement in front and rear sleighs. It cuts the time of travel considerably below half that needed for the journey by team. . The motor sleigh owned by a Cobalt garageman made the complete trip in good time and without misadventure, but had to go into the garage for repairs at the end of the journey. FIRST MOTOR SLEIGH TO ROUYN AND BACK FRIDAY. The Cornish Football Club again on Saturday evening last showed with what success they can provide pleasâ€" ing social events. _ The dance held under the auspices of the Cornish Football Club in the Hollinger Reâ€" creation Hall on Saturday evening. may well be set down as a success from every viewpoint. The attehâ€" dance was large, and all attending found the evening a pleasant one from start to finish. The refreshâ€" ments were up to the usual high standard set by the Cornish folk, and the music was an extra special. ~The music was supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins, violin and piano, and comâ€" ment on its excellence was general and enthusiastic. . These two gifted musicians certainly delighted all with the highâ€"class music furnished. _ It was a genuine treat. Among the ispecial dances during the evening were a Paul Jones and Military twoâ€" steps. The president of the Cornish Football Club, Mr. Richards, made announcement during theâ€" evening to the effect that a series of monthly dances would be held during the preâ€" sent season, theâ€"dances to be on the iast Saturday of each month. CORNISH FOOTBALL CLUB DANCE A BIG SUCCESS. pletion of the road to Wawaitin as early as possible in the spring. Appreciation was expressed at the action of the Ontario Government in ths establishing of correspondence courses for children in sparselyâ€"setâ€" tled districts where school facilities are not possible, the personal interâ€" ost of the Premier, Hon. 4. Howard Fergeuson in the matter being especiâ€" ally appreciated. It was decided that the Board should place its officers at the disposal of settlers in connection with the correspondâ€" ence course education plan, to asisist in giving information about the courses, sending in applications, ete., and that the principals of the schools be asked to act on the committee in this matâ€" ter. Also, that the Associated Boards of Trade be asked to have all its inâ€" dividual boards take the same posiâ€" tion so that the most possible good may be secured from the correspondâ€" ence course plan. ETe P A Theére was a general diseussion of the need for proper accommodation in Timmins for Government officers, especially the post office and the cusâ€" toms â€" office. _ Various suggestions were offered in the matter, Mr. W. 0. Langdon believing that the Ontario and Dominion Governments might coâ€" operate for a building to house all their officers, as such a plan would mean considerable saving to them. Eventually it was decided to have the secretary write to the Postmasterâ€" (General and the Minister of Customs urging that better accommodation be given the public at the post office and customs office at Timmins. The idea is to get the authorities interested in the very apparent need for better quarters for the Government officers. The customs office is inconveniently loâ€" cated, being upstairs and away from the post office and station. The post office is outâ€"ofâ€"date and out of keepâ€" ing with the progress and growth of the town. The Board of Trade inâ€" tends to keep after the question of a proper building for the Government officess. Another question that will likely be kept to the front in the presâ€" ent year is the need for a proper dock at the Mattagami Landing, Timmins. Traffic on the river has increased to considerable proportions and a dock for Mattagami is one of the live issues. f [ â€"I d %.% A"a ................... * #@ .0 #,,*, “.“.“.“.“.“.“ ¢, 4# #4 *# % *. .¢, * “.“.“.“ _ ¢..* s**s #4 # 6 LAST T ## + .“ t 42 H UQ C > #4 ¢, # “:“:oo frormurad # 4 *4 © 24 00,00,44 0\ @. j Ej t-l i4 byx# * 6 dee ectectoote «t 5 ow Jt C > rA ow o. esd “.“ @, *. .*, #4 00.“. # # “( A PICTURE SACRIFIC] +, #4 # # *4 @ 6 s s* . 2%, “.“.“.“ * # #4 + #4 64 #@. * * "® NEXT WEJ Po "LILY C WITH AN ALL N( + “.“ #@ © *4 *4 w € ¢#4. # * "® *4 * € *4 *# 4# *4 +. #© *4 *# ¢ *4 *# # *4 W *#* * # #, “.“ * € h **, _%. *%. * 42 282 2282 @ 00000000 00 000000000000000000000000000‘000000000 *..*,,* 000000.-000000000A 00000000000_00000000 0000000’000000000000000 2 4 4 T THE THEATRES * *4 #.
