Courses are herewith enelosed which you are asked to fill in and return to me. These Courses will be offered free of charge to those families reâ€" mote from schools, who wish to take advantage of them. **When the information asked for on the forms of application is receivâ€" ed it may be possible to send the apâ€" plicants the first lessons in eOnnection with the Correspondence Courses. The work given in these lessons is to be done by the children and returned to me. These lessons will be examined and new ones sent out. All bouks and paper required for the Courses will be furnished by the Department of Eduâ€" ‘ eation.‘‘ ‘*In view of the fact that you seem to be situated at a considerable disâ€" tance {more than three miles) from the nearest school and vour children have not the opportunity of receiving an education such as is desirable, forms of application forâ€" Correspondence ‘"As this enquiry reveals the fact that a considerable number of childâ€" ren are situated in more or less isoâ€" lated places, the Minister has decided to provide Correspondence Courses for these children, wherever the cirâ€" ecumstances would seem to indicate that such corrses could be carried on with a reasonable degree of success. \_The need for provision for the eduâ€" cation of children in the families of settlers and others in the sparselyâ€" settled sections of the North Land has been earnestly urged upon the consiâ€" deration of the Government. It is pleasing to note that the Government has given most careful consideration, and after due enquiry, has taken apâ€" propriate action. This pleasing reâ€" sult is largely due to the sympathetic attitude of Premier Ferguson, Minisâ€" ter of Education, who stands ready at all times to do anything to assist the North Land or the cause of education. In providing the ecorrespondence courses he has aided both. This week settlers and others have received the following letter, which explains itself : Toronto, Jan. 18th, 1926. ‘‘Dear Sirâ€"I beg to inform you that the Minister of Education has recently made special enquiry for the purpose of finding out the number of children of school age, in Ontario, situated in places so remote from a school, that for the greater part of the year they are unable to attend any school. “ A\ * *‘\;G l\"\l"!\;"\' “fl"fl.]lfl fl\n Pfll)" This is a sad world, a hard w orld a happy world and a pleasant worldâ€"â€" this North Landâ€"and here as throughâ€" out the globe the good and the pleaâ€" sant seem to far outweigh the unâ€" worthy and the miserable. GOVERNMENT‘S INTEREST IN NORTH AND EDUCATION. It is a splendid thing to know that business and professional men believe that success in sport is more conâ€" cerned with playing â€" the game with courage‘ and wholeheartedness, rather than with winning or losing matches. The banquet to the hockey lads by the Kiwanis is one of the encouraging incidents in the untoward situation. It is a matter for regret that some of the blows struck and the kicks that reached the fallen referee came from Iroquois Falls people who hoped to injure others,. But it is a compensaâ€" tion to good sportsmanship to know that many Irequois Falls people are generous in approval of the good sportsmanship and good citizenship of men like Walter Eccelestone and others, who _ deliberately â€"accepted blows meant for the referee and reâ€" ceived kicks that were intended to. injure the official who had gone down so hard. | It was a deplorable matter that anyone should so forget good sportsâ€" manship, as to assault a referee as was done in Timmins a week ago. There is the sincerest regret and the deepest shame in Timmins because of the occurrence. But it is pleasant to know that not a single player or anyâ€" one officially connected with hockey participated in the unfortunate misâ€" demeanor. It is gratifying to know that the players, the officials, the polâ€" ice and many others did what they could to stop the trouble. It is regrettable that Iroquois Falls with its winning team and everything in its favour should appear to be anâ€" xious to take advantage of every techâ€" nicality to make assurance doubly sure of winning the trophy, rather than considering the ideal of good sport. But on the other hand it was a fine thing to see the big crowd that went from Timmins last Monday evening to encourage and support a erippled and losing team. It was a cheering thing to hear some of the good sports of Iroquois Falls defend the Timmins lads and pralse their perâ€" severance. | As in everything else in this ugly and beautiful world, there appears to be a mixture of the pleasant and the undesirable in the present hockey situation in this district. 8t FOiQUPint Owner and Publisher. In view of the very heavy traffic to Alaska during the short season available it would be well to make early reservation as demands for acâ€" commodations are sure to heavy. +â€"3 Atrrangements for anâ€" allâ€"expense, personally conducted tour to Alaska have now been completed, starting from Toronto via the Canadian Naâ€" tional Railways, early in July, visitâ€" ing enroute important Western Canaâ€" dian cities, Wainwright Boffalo Park, Jasper National Park and Pacific Coast points. Teevins also was laid out during the game, being ratlfer badly cut back of the ear. He bad to be assisted off the Levine was rather badly hurt when a speedy shot went down behind his breastpad and causing a rupture, as was learned after the game. He made a quick recovery from the injury and carried his good work through to the end of the game. For the Falls Melntyre and Lever were perhaps the stars of the evening with Mills in goal as a superâ€"star. He stopped all kinds of them and his second name is Good Luck. And he‘s good enough not to need so much luck. On account of the action of the N. O.H.A, in suspending Greco and Couâ€" | ture without defence or investigation, the game was played under protest. However, a team was gotten together without the suspended players, and this team put up a good line of hocâ€" key. _ The Falls had no walkâ€"over. Indeed, while it may be admitted that the Falls was the better team on the playâ€"with speedier skating and betâ€" ter combinationâ€"it must also be adâ€" mitted that the score did not indicate the play. Timmins missed two or three excellent chances to score, one muflfed by Boyd being a particularly provoking one to let slip by. The third goal counted was a straight offâ€" ide by three feet. ‘The referee did not see it. QOuimet, of Liskeard, was a great improvement over Bousquet. He was fair ahd apparently counted them as he saw them. He did not consciously favour side, but Timmins had no luck, suffering in penalties and in other ways from the breaks of the game. But all the Timâ€" mins boys played wellâ€"gave all they had,â€"so no one will object. Levine in goal stopped a lot of hard ones. The first two he let in were the kind that get by the best. Another of the goals was wellâ€"earned indeed, a dandy. Boyd and Ganton on defence put up a good game, thoughtful and steady. They each scored a goal for good meaâ€" sure. The forwards played well, and with their combination working well will yet make the Falls sit up and take notice. The Falls must be afraid, or they wouldn‘t be so anxious as they they appear to be to load the chances against Timmins. Lawrence, as usual was a hard, earnest and effecâ€" tive worker, tireless and steady. Charâ€" lebois did well, but did not get going in his best form. Teevins, Arundel and Monoghan played their parts with snap and judgment. The soft ice made the going hard, but it was a good game to watch. Mrs. L. Santouche, on a charge of Monday night for the fifth time this season Timmins lost out to Iroquois Falls in the Junior N.O.H.A. series. The matech was at Iroquois Falls, and a crowdâ€" of around 250 went over from Timmins and the stations along the branch to cheer the Timmins boys along. The big turnout on the special train showed fine sportsmanship. It was a certain tip to the boys that, win or lose they will have support as long as they plm their best as they have been doing. The third period started fast and furious and penalties were handed out freely. Part of this period was fourâ€" menâ€" aâ€"side hockey.. On a pass from Little Duffy got the nicest goal of the game a real dandy. Less than a minâ€" ute after Rowan got another. About six minutées from the end Boyd‘s good work got the second count for ‘Timâ€" mins. Timmins dug in with «ourage and snap, the team working like Troâ€" jans, but there was no more scoring. General satisfaction was expressed by both Timmins and Falls with the work of the referee. The second period opened with Timâ€" mins well on the offensive. Ganton eventually went through for a dandy goal. _ Then Mills was fairly bomâ€" barded, but he stopped them all. The Falls was the next to be allowed a score, but it was offâ€"side just the same. Duffy and Rowan tried the same game again in the same way but this time the referee caught the offsidevand it did not count as a goal. Plgy. had gingered up and roughened up though it was a pretty clean game throughout. It was 3â€"2 at the end of the second: period. s There was such close checking in the first period that the forwards on neither side could get going. Porky stopped a couple of good ones. : Six minutes after the start Mcelntyre got a nice one by, duplicating the trick before another six minutes had passâ€" ed. Timmins made desperate efforts to equalize but failed each time.
