Conditions vary too much for that. But occasions do arise when the possibility of annexation to the United States is referred to in the Canadian Press; and, I believe, is sometimes publicly diseussed. Neverâ€" theless, one of the most pronounced expressions of loyalty possible was given at a public dinner at which I wais present very recently. QUOTES TIMMINS CASE T0 CaNadn‘s LOvaLty ‘*‘Canada Reâ€"Visited.‘‘ This article deals in attractive way with the theme, ‘‘Jack Canuck and His Neighâ€" bour.‘‘ It also quotes an interesting incident of the visit to Timmins, though this town is not mention»d. The incident of the saluting of the flag, however, was at the banquet :n the Empire Hotel, given to the visitâ€" ing newspapermen by the Timmins Board of Trade and the Timmins Kiwanis Club. The following is the article by Mr. Chapter:â€"The comâ€" pletion of a second Canadian tour, comprising a visit to all the provinces of that great Dominion, naturally suggests a comparison between what I saw in 1911 and the conditions preâ€" sent in 1925. ‘©Do you think the people of Londâ€" on are loyal?""" a Canadian asked me fourteen years ago. ‘‘Why do you question such a thing?"‘ I replied. ‘‘Well,‘"‘ said he, ‘‘when I was in London last year I went to a theatre, and it was not till everybody was goâ€" ing out at the end of the performance that I heard a single note of the Natâ€" ional Anthem, and then only one verse was played by the orchestra. The audience didn‘t join in singing it!‘‘ It was not difficult to reassure my Canadian friend, but I wonder what his feelings are toâ€"day? Westminister Gazette, of London, Eng., Refers to Interesting Inâ€" cident at Timmins There has been, nevertheless, a very marked increase of friendship beâ€" tween Canadians and Americans since my former visit, due in a large measâ€" ure to freer interâ€"communication. Canadians roads have been much exâ€" tended and improved, coincident with an enormous new â€"expenditure upon motorâ€"cars. Many Canadians have thus visited the States who formerly did not go there, and the number of Americans who spend summer . and winter vacations in Canada has of late been multiplied many fold. Many Canadians cities make special provision for the accommodation of these visitors by the establishment of free automobile camping grounds within or near their borders. Thus encouraged, the . American has not been slow to take advantage of the facilities offered â€"him to visit the innumerable showâ€"places and holâ€" iday resorts in the Reâ€" ciprocity in the matter of motorâ€"car licensing and regulation has removed many obstacleq, and he pours over the Canadian border in thousands of the 18,000,000 pleasure cars now said to have, been licensed in the United States. To make this mode of travel still more easy, trail associations have been ‘formed, and he finds his way aâ€" long unfamiliar roads by the aid of coloured directors pointing out the Red Trail, or the Blue Trail, or what not. Among the British Press men visitâ€" ing Timmins somé weeks ago was Mr. J. F. Chapter, of The Westminster Gazette, London, England. A recent issue of The Westminster Gazette is to hand, containing the first of what promises to be an unusually inâ€" teresting series of articles entitled, ‘‘Gentlemen,"‘‘ said the Chairman, before the meal was served, ‘‘we will begin in our usual way with the salute of the flag.‘‘ Thereupon the entire company rose to attention, and turned to face the Union Jack displayed in one corner of the room. In formal military style everyone raised hus hand to the salute, and with one acâ€" cord the 180 men present sang ‘‘God Save the King‘‘ with true Canadian fervour. That did not look like disâ€" loyalty, and it did, I believe, express the feeling of the overwhelming maâ€" jority. No seenic attraction can well surâ€" pass the Canadian Rokies. They are proving a new. ‘‘eash crop,‘‘ the exâ€" ploitation of which will do much to em'lch not only the people of British Columbla but many cities and towns lying along the great â€"highway which now stretches from Calgary, *"‘the gateway to the grandeur of the mounâ€" tains,"‘‘ to Tampico, in Mexico. One natural outcome of all this newly developed intercourse between the two EnglisHâ€"speaking people of the North American Continent has been a great increase of neighbourly feeling between John Canuk and A doctor says that anger is caused by a tiny organism the size of a pin point. These . cireumstances will, I believe, hasten the development of Canada‘s resources more quickly and more thorâ€" oughly than for any other reason.‘‘ He declared. he had every cofiâ€" dence that future years for a conâ€" siderable time to come will cortinue to disclose new mineral fields in various parts of Canada no less reâ€" markable than the discovery of the last 25 years. SsSoOUTH TEMISKAMING CANDIDATE LOST ° DEPOSIT While being transferred last week to the Sudbury District jail to await trail for escaping from Burwash, Norâ€" man Weir slipped the handâ€"cuff from his hand and dissappeared over the C. P.R. tracks. Weir was being taken inâ€" to the jail.along with another prisoner and when he escaped, the guard, who had accompanied him from Burwash, could not leave the other prisoner to join in the chase. ® Dominion Has Chance to Make Up â€" for Exhaustion in Old Hands, SBays Dr. Camsell The police seoured the country for over a day before they were able to locate anyone who had even noticed the escaped prisoner, but eventually a message was received to the effect that he had been seen at Sudbury Junection. Weir had stolen some clothes and changed from the prison The world‘s everâ€"increasing need of material to meet the demands and the gradual exhaustion of Old World sourée of supply are factors driving towards the early opening up of Canâ€" ada‘s unfathomed mineral deposâ€" its, Dr. Charles Camsell, Deputy Minâ€" ister of Mines, Ottawa, declared in a comprehensive survey of the Canaâ€" dian mineral trade, before the openâ€" ing session of the annual convention of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held at Winnipeg, Manitoba, last week. Harold Welch, the Progressive party candidate in South Temisâ€" kaming, lost his deposit in the recent election. Any candidate who does not receive half as many votes as the successful candidate has to forfeit the deposit. This, of course, is to prevent expense through a multiplieâ€" ity of candidates running ‘‘just for fun,.‘‘ as the ~boys say..In . South Temiskaming Mr. Welch only polled 1965 votes, while Mac Lang had 4548, and Col. Armstrong, Conservative candidate was winner with 5,394 votes. After showing that Canada‘s imâ€" ports in the metals and mineral line was $124,000,000.00 in exceess of the exports for 1924, though the year as a whole had shown a favourable trade balance, Dr. Camsell, pointed out that tfie deficit was largely due to the fact that Canada‘s exports were of the raw and partly manufactured products, whereas the imports covered the finished manufactured articles in such fields as structural steel, maâ€" chinery, copper wire, gasoline and chinaware. garh and thus made a fairly easy getâ€" away.
