He earried with him some fine samples of coal _ taken about 100 miles north. He has a diamond drill working on the property and has met with remarkable results at a depth of about 71 feet, striking a 12â€"foot vein of as good quality coal as ever came out of Alberta, So far he has drilled at three places and the reésult he met with makes him enthusiâ€" astic of the future prospects of devel-f opment of the mine."‘ * The opening Social Evening of the recently organized Social Club is to be held on Tuesday evening, Oct. 13th. Frequently in the past there have been encouraging reports of big coal finds north of Cochrane, but nothing has yet come of these northern â€" coal fields. On one occasion some years ago The Advance saw beautiful samples of the finest looking coal _coming from north of Cochrane. About ‘the only trouble with the coal was that it was easier to look at than to burn. However, other prospectors are to have had better luck in locating beds of highâ€"grade coal in the North. A great many prospecâ€" tors and others who know the country north of Cochrane are confident that bhg coal fields will be developed there eventually. At the present® time northern coal fields would be very. acceptable in view of the way the southern coal supply has been kickâ€" ing up. In this connection the folâ€" lowing paragraph from the last issue of The Northland Post, of Cochrane, will ‘be of interest :â€"â€" 3 j ‘‘The deseased, wno was in his 86th year, followed the construction of the C. After marriage, he located at Webbâ€" wood, from where he moved to Masâ€" sey, where he acted as foreman for the firm of McDonald and Hall. Shortly after 1896, he started in business for hrmself, oonductmg a livery in Masâ€" sey,. s ‘*When news of the gold strike in the Poreupine went broadcast, Mr. Campbell followed the trail â€"further North and was appointed as Crown Lands Agent at the camp. Discovery of the Dome Mine brought him conâ€" siderable wealth as he held an interâ€" est in the property. ‘*A pioneer of the North, one who played an active part in the construcâ€" tive and industrial life of the country, was claimed by death yesterday afterâ€" noon in the person of John George Campbell, at his residence in Walford An .eventful career was that of the late Mr. Campbell. He came to the North with a C. P. The Sudbury Star on Saturd last, Oct. 3rd, says :â€" ONE OF PIDNEERS OF THE PORCUPINE PASSES AWAY Last week it was decided to proâ€" ceed with the Foster Cup competition while waiting on the Ontario Cup games. In the draws, Dome was to play Kirkland, and then Timmins to play the winner on the winner‘s grounds. . Dome defaulted. the match to Kirkland: Lake, so it was up to Timmins to play at Kirkland. â€" The game was arranged last week _ on short order for Saturday. The Timâ€" mins boys left here on the early train, Kirkland Lake seems to be the one team in this North Land that can always be depended upon to give Timmins Football Team a real close run for the money. Last year Timâ€" mins and Kirkland played three tie games bbfore it was finally settled that Timmins had the better team. This year, with one exception, all the matches between â€"Kirkland and Timâ€" mins have been close, and final vieâ€" tory for Timmins in each of the eups had to be won by battle. According to an article recently in The Pulp and Paper Magazine, in an interview, Mr. J. H. Black, head of the Spruce Falls Co., Limited, stated that there was nothing in the reported merger of his company with the Mattagami Pulp and Paper Co., of Smooth Rock Falls. Mr. Black said that he was at a loss to know how the rumour started, unless it was that he happened to be seen having a smoke and a chat with 8. R. Armstrong, general manager of the Mattagami Co. When asked for a statement concernâ€" ing the plans of the Spruce Falls Co., under chis direction, Mr. Black said that he would be in a position to give out an authorative statement within the next few weeks. MATTAGAMI CO., NOT TO MERGE IN SPRUCE FALLS CO returning on the late evening train. As usual, Kirkland put up a battle royal, and full time was played withâ€" out a score on either side.> The last half of the match is said to have been a little rough, with the referee, Mr. Meath, of Kirkland Lake, not holding the Kirkland lads down as closely as might have been done, according to some who saw the match. However, it was a lively and interesting match. Now, to decide the Foster Cup for this season another match will likély be ealled on Timmins ground. The Timmins team going to Kirkâ€" land Lake was as follows :â€" Goal, Elrick; backs, Liddle and Street; halves, Cooper, F. Cadman, short; forwards, Dunn, Sathrang, Peterson, A. Cadman, A. Roberts. It was a nice workâ€"out for the Timâ€" mins boys and put them on their toes for the game on Saturday here with Claremonts in the Ontario Cup semiâ€" finals.
