H. McCarthy Married Recently. All in Timmins and district will be interested in the wedding that took place at Echo Bay, Ont., on Sept. 15. The bride, who was Miss Helen Hurâ€" ley, was on the staff of Simms, Hooker Drew, Timmins, for a considerable time, and made large circeles of friends here. The groom, Mr. J. R. H. Meâ€" Carthy, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McCarthy, is one of the most popular young men of the Camp. Innumerâ€" able friends in Timmins will extend very sincere good wishes to the young couple. ‘‘A very pleasant event took place at the home of Mr. Wan. Hurley, Echo Bay, Ont., on Tuesday evening, Sept. 15th when his daughter, Helen May became the bride of Mr. John Richard Holden MeCarthy, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. MceCarthy, of Timmins, Ont. The ceremony was performed out ofâ€"doors, the wedding party standing beneath a large maple tree. which togcther with green vines and rose shrubs, made a very effective backâ€" ground. â€" The bride who was given away by her father, looked charming in a gown of white duchess satin and fleurcrette with bouquet of. sweetheart roses, lilies of the valley, and maiden hair fern. She was attended by Miss Ruby MeCarthy, sister of the groom, who was gowned in shell pink georâ€" gette, carrying a bouquet of pink roses. KEARNEY WING ARGT PRIZE 1N ESSAY CONTEST In Competition With Essayists From All Over the Dominion, Timmins Optometrist Takes First Place Some time ago the Imperial Optical Co. inaugurated a competition open to all opticians in Canada for the writâ€" ing of an essay on Perfex Lenses and Imperial Kryptoks. â€" There were hunâ€" dreds .of essays submitted and the general »standard of the contribution was so high that the judges had conâ€" siderable difficulty in making _ the award. Last week, however, the judges reached their decision, which awarded the first prize to Mr. H. W. Kearney, of the Curtis Optiecal Co., Timmins. A cheque for $100.00 acâ€" companies the honour of first place in the contest. Second prize ($50.00) was won by Mr. J. N. Waterman, Collingwood, Ont. There were also 15 prizes of ten dollars each, awarded as follows:â€"C. R. Nimnio, Stratford, Ont.; Mr. Ross Sauvage, Seaforth, Ont.; Norman Foy, Toronto;, M. S. Annis, Lindsay, Ont.; Miss Geraldine Woods, Toronto; W. L. MceGill, Galt, Ont.; F. Bryans, Hamilton; H. K. Kirkeonnell, Toronto; Roger Barker, Leamington, Ont.; A. E. Mallette, Cochrane, Ont.; W. H. Currie, Hamilâ€" ton; R. M. Mitchell, Bowmanville, Ont.; Gordon Shaw, Vernon, B.C.,; Alf. Hipkins, Hamilton; L. A. Bartâ€" lett, Calgary, Alta. In making the awards, the judgesâ€" Messrs W. H. Lewis, mention that the essays on the whole were of such uniform excellence that they found ereat difficulty in making the awards. The papers were numbered and the names of the writers were not known until the awards had been made. To compete in this contest sucessâ€" fully it was not only necessary to be able to write in attractive literary style, but also a very wide knowledge of optical matters and a grasp of the technical details of the profession were essential. In winning first place Mr. H. W. Kearney not ouly has done credit to himself but he also has reflected a certain amount of honour on the town where so outstanding a leader practices his profession.
