Bull ~0â€"14, Some Questions to be Taken Up by the Associated Boards At the annual meeting of the Asâ€" soctated Boards of Trade being held in Cochrane toâ€"day (Thursday) there will be the election of officers for the ensuing year, and a number of imporâ€" tant resolutions will be considered. Among those of which the Timmins Board of Trade has received notice fhre the following :â€"â€" Resolution from Iroquois Falls reâ€" garding lots held by persons who are not living on them and have not done their homestead duties. In some cases these lots are held at exorbitant prices,, although they are not patentâ€" ed. The result is naturally the handiâ€" capping of settlement in any district Unimproved Lots Holding Batck Settlement. Burning of Slash Important. Supplementary Tests Required for Middle School Examinations. Associated Boards Holdâ€" ing Annual Meeting at Cochrane This Week. concerned. The Government is urged to take action to remedy such a situaâ€" tion where it exists. Resolution from Cochrane Board of Trade as follows;â€" _ **WHEREAS the abnormal climate conditions prevailing during the past few years have prevented the general seasonal work of disposal of slash on settlers‘ clearings through burning; ‘‘AND WHEREAS this accumulaâ€" tion of slash throughout the district has taken such alarming proportions as to threaten to become a serious menace to settlements and towns whenever a dry spell sets in ; ‘*AND WHEREAS a continued dry spell either this Fall or next Spring, will inevitably start an unprecedented conflagration which may quickly beâ€" come uncontrollable and bring on a holocaust sueh as will overshadow all previous â€" similar eatastrophes â€" and calamities here; A despatch last week from â€" Port Arthur says:â€"‘L. Hodgson, Canaâ€" dian Pacific Railway roadmaster at Schreiber, with jurisdiction exténdâ€" ing over the Port Caldwell District, was arrested Friday morning «on a train near Schreiber by Sergeant Inâ€" gram of the Provincial Police, charged with the murder of, Edward Hewitt, at Port Caldwell, an Friday â€" night, Ath. It is said that Hodgson confesâ€" ,sed his guilt to the sergeant, and the provmclal police at Port Arthur conâ€" firm this report. Hodgson was taken "to White River toâ€" day and given a hearing before Magistrate Depew, who remanded him to the Port Arthur jail, _ Suspicion has been directed against Hodgson ever since the inquiry at Port Caldwell on Sunâ€" day, â€" Septmberâ€" 6th, : conducted by Coroner Laurie of ths city. : Hodgson was the only witness who swore that Hewitt had been drinking and the postâ€"morten conducted here on Monâ€" day last by Dr. Crosier showed that there was trace of aleohol in Hewitt‘s stomach. Hodgson gave eviâ€" dence that Hewitt had called at the section house where he (Hodgson) was playing cards, and that he had walked with Hewitt as far as his shack. Hewitt was last seen alive at 12.10 midnight Friday night, when an employee named Johnson, going off duty, saw him standing on a cliff borâ€" dering on Echo Lake. +~Sitting beside him was a man whose head was buried in his shoulders, his face hidden Johnson said **goodâ€"night""‘ to both Hewitt and the other man, but got a reply only from Hewitt. The unâ€" known man had a khaki cap on, reâ€" sembling one worn by Hodgson, Johnâ€" son said at the inquiry. Hewitt" was in the habit of carmying a large roll of money on him and on that m«rht while cashing two cheques, he had e\hlblted a large roll containing between $400 and $500. He had nearly $4,000 to. his credit in the Schreiber branchk of . the Bank of Montreal. Hodgson has been with the C.P.R. as roadmaster at Schreiber for three years. He is a married man and his home is at Schreiber."! "*THEREFORE BE IS RESOLV ED that the Cochrane Board of Trade go on record as strongly urging upon the Ontario Government the advisability of enforeing a systematic and compulâ€" sory burning of slash from now on till winter sets in, and at such points wherever the danger of surrounding bush, settlements or towns is particuâ€" larly pronounced, and that such burnâ€" ing be done under the supervision of the present fire ranging staff and that the Government be requested to retain all Chiefs and fire rangers beyond the usual time this Fall and until suffiâ€" cient burning of slash has been done to eliminate the #ost threatening It is also likely that there will be a resolution asking the Government â€"to have examination results published earlier. As it is, the late date at which the Departmental examination results are announced makes it very inconvenient for the pupils. A resolution from Timmins asks for supplementary tests in connection with the Middle School Examinations. There have been a number of striking cases where the present regulations seem to work unnecessary hardship. If a pupil fails on eten one subject it means that another year must be spent before Normal School can be attended. This means in â€"many cases that the student is unable to carry on and educational work has to be dropâ€" ped altogether. If supplementary exams, were permittedy as they used to be, a pupil could continue with the educational programme, taking the subject or subjects on which failure had been made whrle the course was being carried through. *‘ ‘‘Why what‘s happened to that nice little green one?"‘ ‘‘Oh! HANDSOME CUPS GIVEN FOnâ€" TOWNSITE PREMISES This summer it has been noted that there are a large number of beauti-1 ful lawns, flower beds and gardens on the Hollinger Townsite. A trip through the Townsite this year, with its wellâ€"kept and pleasing home surâ€" roundings is a genuine . pleasure to those who love flowers: and beauty. The householders, of @ourse, have been caring for their premises beâ€" cause of their own innate love of flowers and beautiful surroundings. But they are also being rewarded in another â€" way. To encourage the beautifying of homes in the Townâ€" site the Hollinger has given . three handsome cups for the three best kept and most beautiful premises in the Townsite. The judges were Mr. H. Hatton, President of the Tlmmms Horticultural Society, Mr. F. C. H. Simms, a wellâ€"known lover of flowers and expert in the care of lawns and flowers. and Mr. J. H. Bacon, the Townsite manager. The judges made a careful inspection and review of the many fine places in the Townsite. No doubt the task of judging was a difficult one, there being so many atâ€" tractive and wellâ€"kept lawns and the judges gave their findings of the prize winners, as follows :â€" AT THE THEATRES T #4 ¢ * AI n *4 #% 44 *4 # + #4 * + td + 4 * 4 # 3 t * + + < C #* © # +4 %2,> e**s #4+ # 4 #+* #* *# *# %#4 #@ € #+ # #% 44 * 4# *4 *# + #4* # ¢ 44 @ #4 * 4 #4 # < *4 @ 4+ #*% @ Cns *# 4 *4 @ L #* @ h #4 @ # #4 #@ * #% #* # # Cnd *# #% AIT ANIMI *4 #@ * #4 * © *4 @ L 44 @ % *#+ # * *4 # bat *% 00““:01 @ %.% d C -y'ou must kick, then kick in the direction of the goal. / Road.
