Officer Simp- son was pictured by The Star in the act of putting up the printed notice forbidding the public to interfere with the Steamer Nancy. Recently there have been so many souvenir hunters taking mementoes from the Nancy that it. looked for a time as if every- thing would he carried away. Accor- dingly the authorities acted, so that something might be left, and The Star photographer snapped Officer Simp- son while he was putting up the forâ€" mal notice in the matter. A number of formulas for such mixtures are given in a pamphlet on the methods of protection against mosquitoes, and black flies, just issued by the Ento- mtiilogical Branch of the Dominion Department of Agriculture. A mix- ture recommended by the author is composed of 3 ounces of oil of nitro- nella, 1 of spirits of camphor, 1 of oil of tar. 1/4 an ounce of oil of penny- royal and from 4 to 6 ounces of cus~ tor oil. Another mixture consists of 12 ounces of oil of citronella. 13» an ounce of pcnnyroyal and 2 ounces ol.’ castor oil. The ’astor oil is included to prevent injury to the skin. Tallow may he used inslead if it is desired to have the mixture in the form of a paste. . . s 'Q J» \Vhen the insects are abundant. it is neeessary tin apply the mixture at least unee every half hour. using lib- eral quantities and rubbing it tlmr- nughly over the hands and face. Care should be taken to have a sutlieient quantity of a mixture when on an ex- tended trip in the woods. At least an nunee per persnn per day is neces- sary if the flies are anyway abundant.
