On Friday evening last a very enâ€" joyable evening was spent in the Oddâ€" fellows‘ Hall, Timmins, it being the usual monthly ‘ social given by the Maccabees. Card games occupied the early part the evening, being followâ€" ed by dancing about 50 being present. There would have been a larger atâ€" tendance but for a slight misunderâ€" standing as to the arrangements f the event, but all present had a ver‘y pleasant time, and it is confidently expected that at the next social by the Order there will be a bhumper attenâ€" dance.â€" Music for the dancing was furnished by Mr. W. For the concluding matches last Saturday afternoon, the weather was slightly too warm for good golf, a thunderstorm coming up about three o‘clock interfering to some extent with the play, though this had a cooling effect on the weather, and gave the later entries a better chance to turn in a good seore. _ The following are the players who turned in scores for the four matches to decide the possesâ€" sion of the Geo, Lake shield, with the scores of each :â€" Auer, F. Apparently many at Widdifield are not satisfied with the finding of the Coroner and Provincial Police that farmer (Genereaux met his death in a battle with a bear in a shack near his farm a week or two ago. They assert that there are absolutely no. indications that.any bear or bears were near the shack, and they alsoi claim that the conditions under which the body was found wouldâ€" suggest that an explosion had caused the death. A neighbour asserts that he distinctly heard an explosion on the day of the tragedy. _ The claim is made that the man‘s hand instead of being bitten off by the bear was blown off by the explosion. It is thought. that Genereaux found some percussion caps in a tin ‘box and in some manner or another exploded them. _ Pieces of tin were embedded in the tableé, as were also parts of the man‘s clothing. â€" The upholders of the explosion theory also emphaâ€" size the fact that the suppositions regarding an attack by a bear are contrary to all general knowledge of the ways and habits of bears. From the tone of the protests sent from Widdifield to outside newspapers it would appear that the people of Widdifield feel that the bears have been unduly slandered. An inquest $Shas been requested by some to clear up the matter. WIDDIFIELD BELIEVES THE BEAR WAS SLANDERED.
