Brutal Murder Committed In Smooth Rock Falls On. Monday momning of last week on returning to the shack he occupied with ‘Petrus Van Gheluwe at Smooth Rock Falls, after a visit to his farm at Shillington, Mr. James Fillier was shocked to find that his friend Mr. THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO Van (G@heluwe had been murdered in the most ‘brutal fashion. ‘The police were notified at onece and Provincial Officers at once took up the case with Keen energy. Van (Gtheluwe had been battered about the head, evidently with the blunt end of an axe. The skull was broken through in several places and the head and face,. shamefully smashed and pounded. The victim was tied hand and foot and had also been gagged. MHis hands were fastenâ€" ed together with a nope, and hayâ€"wire was wound around his legs. A gag was tightly bound around his face to silence any cries he might attempt to make. There was also a strip of cloth wound around his neck, with the evident intention of choking him so as to interfere with any resistence he might attempt. From information coming from ‘Cochrane it would apâ€" pear that the police are on the track of the murderers. ‘The police theory is understood to be that the terrible crime was committed by two men who visited the shack on Sunday evening. It is thought that they approached the shack after securing an axe from a shed nearby. _ Then, it is thought, they knocked at the door and when V an (Gheluwe opened the door he was smashed on the head with the axe. The axe was found ‘behind some boards and ‘hay with evidences indiâ€" cative of the use of it had been put to It appears to the police that Van (Gheluwe put up a desperate resistance and that the men were so afraid of him that after getting him down they tied and gagzed him before completâ€" ing the battering of him to death. Van ‘Gheluwe was a big man, and powerful, and even with the odds two to one and with the axe used against him, was able to hold out fon some time against the men attacking him. Investigation ‘by the police turned suspicion against a couple of men: and arrests in the case are likely before Petrus Van Gheluwe Found With His Head Battered In Apparently With Axe Head. Victim Was Tied and / Gagged, and Head Pounded in Horrible Fashion. / _ Provincial Police Busy on the Case. The erime occurred some time beâ€" tween noon on Sunday and 9.30 Monâ€" day morning. ‘The men committing the murder apparently acted with considerable deliberation after their victim had ‘been killed. There were evidences to show â€"that the men had wiped off the axe and hid it, and also that they had washed their hands to remove traces of blood, the towel used being _ thnown â€" carelessly _ down. Finger marks on articles in the shack are likely to prove helpful factors in bringing to justice those guilty of this brutal murder. The police adâ€" mit it to ibe one of the most ‘brutal murders they have ‘known for some time. The late Petrus Van Gheluwe was a Belgian and was 59 years of age. He had ‘been sevenal years in this North Land and was highly esteemed by all who knew him. So far as known he had no enemies, and the motive that appears to account for the brutal murder is the fact that he had drawn $100.00 from the ibank a day or so previous and there was no trace of this money when the body was disâ€" covered. Some small change on his person, however was left untouched. There did not appear to be any other evidences of theft or robbhery from the shack. Messrs. Van Gheluwe and James Fillien were keeping house together Mr. Fillier went down over the weekâ€" end to his farm at Shillington and in the shack at Smooth Rock Falls, his partner, Van G@heluwe accompaniâ€" ed him. Mr. Fillier wanted him to continue on at the fatm until the two would return on Monday to Smooth Rock Falls, but the late V an Gheluwe decided to return ahead of his partâ€" ner. He was accordingly back on Sunday < and met his death at the shack sometime between noon and the followine morning. The bank in Belgium with whish the late Van Gheluwe had an agccount has been communicated with so that relatives and friends in his home land may be notified of the tragedy. An inquest was held into the death sof V an Gheluwe.
