Season Closed With Good Balance on Hand. Report of the Secretaryâ€" Some weeks ago in referring to the annual meeting of the Poreupine Disâ€" trict Football League, The Advance promised to publish the report of the Secretaryâ€"Treasuren in full. This reâ€" port is now available. It is particuâ€" larly timely this week in view of the opening of the active football season, and also on account of the IP.D.F.L. Smoker: in the Hollinger Hall on Saturday evening. At this Smoker it is expected ‘that the two donors of trophies will ‘be present to make the formal presentation.. Mn Garrett, donor of the Garrett Shield, will be there all right ,and Mr. E. H. Bridger, donor of the medals, in answer to a query from the Secretary, has proâ€" mised to **do. his doggonedest to he with the boys‘‘ for the occeasion. He will only be able to make a flying trip, reaching here Saturday evening and leaving again on Sunday. The following is the neport of the Secretaryâ€"Treasurer, Mr. W. A. Field, as submitted at the annual meeting: To the Officers and Members cf P.JD.FP.L, With the greatest of pleasure 1 submit to you the First Annual Stateâ€" ment of this Association. ‘Going back less than one year ago to the organizâ€" ation meeting he‘d in Schumacher, recalls to my mind the fact that it was a hard and futile task to get anyâ€" one to accept ‘this position. So, beâ€" ing, I think I may say, the sponson of this League, I agreed to take it myâ€" self with the one idea of helping to make it a success. This is why it gives me greatest pleasure in submitâ€" ting this report to you, ‘because I think it was a great succeess taking everything dnto _ considenation. Of course we had some stumbling blocks which was a natural thing to expect in the first year, but if we are ail ready to profit by oun mistakes in the past a still greater success can be lJookâ€" ed for by this body. _ There was apâ€" proximately two hundred registered players with this Association last vear. Treasurer for Year. the medals. Trusting that this league will do the right thing along these lines before we go into new business, I would like to suggest a smoker some place and let us get as many of the boys together from all} teams As is possrble It would make a good beâ€" ginning fon the second year of the P. OPPOSITION CONTINUED TO RAILWAY EXTENSION Apparently opposition continues to the extension of the ‘Ontario Governâ€" ment Railway into the Province of Quebec. It was hoped that conferâ€" ences would smooth the matter over with the Quebec Government, but up to the time of writing this, success had not attended the efforts of the Ontario people in this direction. In Ontanio also there is developing~a body of opinion along the line of sugâ€" gesting, ‘‘‘Why not use the millions necessary for the railway extension for the building of roads in the North THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO JP QOUbULJMAL NAULLZ a a + + 4 + luding forfeit ...... mnueâ€"andâ€"All ... ... The Government naturally does not preâ€" tend to go on the principle of spendâ€" ing just so much money, and if one department does not use the appropriâ€" ation made for it, that the money is spent on something else, ‘The theory is that the Government plans to spend only what is necessary, and where it is necessary, and if money is not used for the purpose for which it is earâ€" marked, then it is not used at all, unâ€" til othen matters are passed by the Legislature and Government. To reâ€" turn, however, to the matter of the discussion on the proposed extension of the railway to Rouyn, despatch.s from Toronto last week say :â€" "*The Ontario govennment is realizâ€" ing that opposition by Quebec to the extension of the Temiskaming Northern Ontario Railway into the Rouyn mineral field in Quebec is more real than was thought. Geonge Lee, of the T. N.O., had a conference with Premier Ferguson this morning on the question. He stated afterwards that it had ibecome a legal question but would not state what attitude the Commission and the Ontario governâ€" ment intended to take. A huge aâ€" mount of supplies have already been taken in for the construction of the road and this effort may be wasted if the road is held up. At the same time, advice comes to hand that the C.N.R. is determined to serve the terâ€" ritory. One unofficial and unconffirmâ€" ed report reiterates former reports that private capital will clear the rightâ€"ofâ€"way and _ doâ€" preliminatry grading with the understanding that the C.N.R. will then lease the migatâ€" ofâ€"way and will itself lay the ties and rails. It is stated that this arrangeâ€" ment overcomes the restrictions which the Dominion placed upon the conâ€" struction of the C.NVR. branch. â€" It is believed that the C.N. R. has in mind a plan to complete the bnanch before snow flies in the fall.
