NO MUBDER GOMMITTED NORTH OFf ISLAND FALLS During the past couple of weeks there have been all sorts of stories puwblished in the daily papers in reâ€" gard to a supposed murder or series of murders north of Island Falls. These stories are practically withâ€" out any foundation. Where was uo murder and, broadly speaking, no exâ€" cuse for suggesting there had ‘been a murden. After the tales of this alâ€" leged crime had been brought to Cocaâ€" rane, it was of course necessary to inâ€" vestigate the reports. It was found! that at the place designated there was: no dead body of any murdered man or anything like that. So ifar as can be learned and surmised the story originated in the following way:â€"â€" An Indian in the course of his travels happened to pass a shack in front of which two white men were engaged in a quarrel; just as the Indian came aâ€" long. The two white men were trapâ€" pers and had been accussing each other .of trying to overâ€"reach. One of the tnappers was sitting in dfront of the ca‘bin wonking on a ipelt, with his rifle allongside ‘him. The other one came along and thought his partâ€" ner had *‘swiped‘‘ one of the first men‘s pelts.. Words were spoken in anger, and then the one trapper made a tush at his partner. The partâ€" ner picked up his rifle and swatted the rushing man across the head. The blow was a sturdy one and the man struck collapsed for a minute or two. The Indian saw the ‘blow, he saw the man who was hit drop oven, and he jumped to the conglusion that the man was killed. Aefordingly, Mr. Indian: hastened to civilization to tell the story of what he took to be a crime. However, the man who was struck with the barrell of the rifle was nbt only not killed, but he was searceâ€" ly even injured. . He was able at least to get up afterwards and walk about six miles to anocther location. The imagination of the Indian ind of some others, however, succeeded in making the lively story that has caused so much talk and discussion. THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO tory Started Through® Excitement of Indian Who Witnessed Quarrel Between Two Trappers. In the report of the doings of the Legislature last week there appeared in The Mail Empire the following paragraph :â€" ‘M. Lang (Lib., Cochnane) said it would look from the Attorneyâ€"Genâ€" eral‘s argument as though representâ€" atives from wet ridings should vote for the amendment. He would alâ€" ways vote against the Conservatives, anyway, he remarked amid general hilarity.‘‘ # That was a mather mean attitude for Mac Lang to take, in view of the fact that he owes so much to Conseryvâ€" ative votes. Most people will be ready to admit that it was really Conservative votes that elected him in the first place. Since then he has always received quite a numben of Conservative votes. Still, ‘he Bays, he‘ll always vote against the Conseryvâ€" atives, and the House laughed. But he also received a lot of ‘‘Wet‘‘ votes in this riding, yet he vyoted, ‘‘dry,"‘ and both the Liberals and Conservâ€" atives can laugh at that, if they like. _ Band concert in the Goldfields Theatre after the church services on Sunday evening, April 12th.
