THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO THIRD PRIZE (By Hugh Train) How Can I Best Fit Myself to Become a Citizen of Northern Ontario. The thing that should be considered first is to keep healthy. If a man‘s health is gone, he is gone. He can easily keep good health if he takes care of himself. As winter is the longest season of the year in Northâ€" ern Ontario, and as this season brings along with it certain dangerous diâ€" seases, he should fit himself to meet these diseases. But, winter brings him health, too, Especially, the nice, cold winter of Northern Ontario! The air is so dry and invigorating, that if he wears warm clothing and takes plenty of exereise, he can easily avoid these diseases. He should eulâ€" tivate simple living, keep clean, and take part in the various Northern Ontario sports. Sports, such as skatâ€" ing, sleighâ€"riding, skiâ€"ing, and tobogâ€" ganing, will be a great benefit for him in keeping his health. Besides sports, he should do plenty of work. â€" He should go to bed early and get up early in order to get a good rest. Staying up till late hours decreases the length of one‘s life. He should not eat foods that disagree with him. The next thing that is considered is getting a good education. _ If he is educated he will have a wider outâ€" look on the world, and he will have the capability of speaking intelligentâ€" ly with any of his fellowâ€"men. He should acquire a good sense of geoâ€" logy, because Northern Ontario is rich in minerals. He should get all information concerning mining or any other important industry of Northern Ontario that he is interested in. He should pay attention to rock formaâ€" tions, this being essentially a mining camp. | He should know the different ore bodies, for very often opportuniâ€" ties are presented, and particularly in a new and unsettled country like this. $151,000 RAISED FOR NEW HOTEL AT HAILEYBURY The campaign to raise $150,000.00 for a modern hotel in Haileybury closed last week, the objective aimed at ‘being exceeded by $1000.00. The gaining of the objective was celebrqâ€" ted by a dinner in the 1.0.0.F. Hail, where there were happy speeches, conâ€" cratulations and so on. The speech of the evening is reported as being made by Mr. W. A. Gordon, who proâ€" posed the toast to the Hockenbury System, Incorporated, and Mr. F. L. Campbell, who had charge of the campaign. Ontario. SUGGEST ESTABLISHMENT NORTH BAY FISH HATCHERY Representations have been ‘made to | the Department at Foronto for the establishment of a Fish Hatchery at North Bay. The North Bay Board of Trade has taken a leading part in forwarding the idea and active coâ€" operation is ‘being given by (Mr. H. Morel, M. L. A. for Nipissing, and by the _ Liberalâ€"Conservative Assoâ€" clation of North Bay. One of the arguments advanced is that at the present the nearest hatchery is at Sault Ste. Marie and that the trave! from there to North Bay causes a big loss in fry due to the confinment in cans for so long a period. If there is -force in this argument (and there cerâ€" tamh appears to be), the establishâ€" ment of a fish hatchery at North Bay would prove of general advantage to the North, making the distance necesâ€" sary to ship for restocking of rivers and lakes so much shorter than at An Ohio woman has served her husband a pie every day since 1904. The remarkable thing is not the pie but the husband. DURABLE MAN Exchange A person who knows is always in a better position to choose a winning proposition when offered. Many peo-‘ ple make easy money this way. This: country is also very wellâ€"timbered and by knowing and observing conditions pertaining to agriteulture, he can often do well by taking up a piece of land. In the winter he can get this cleared and dispose of the timber to the paper industry. â€" In summer he can do his farming. â€" This is quite a considerâ€" able industry in Northern Ontario, and he could do very well at this kind of work. This is also a good place for furâ€" bearing animals and by observation he can soon get familiar with the difâ€" ferent furs that are in demand. Then he can easily learn, and it would be interesting for him to know, their habits, and to know how to trap them. He should also learn how to travel in the woods by means of the sun or compass or other signs used by the Indians, because he mlo'ht lose his way while out fishing, hunting or trapping. He should also pay attention to his religion, as rehglon will console him and helpâ€" him in all his difficulties. He should know the most important parts of the Bible and also attend church regularly. He should not forget good manners and politeness. He will be regarded as a clean man then. The public will show him respect if he shows them respect in return. He should respect his superiors and treat his inferiors the same as himself. Another important thing for him to do is to seek good company, for he will be known by the company he keeps. If he does this, he will learn useful things that he doesn‘t know: If he seeks bad company he will only go with them, and everyone knows where that is. He will learn their haâ€" bits and become more broadâ€"minded. He should always be optimistic and cheerful. He shouldn‘t look on the dull side of things. _ Smiles will do him good, too. As an old saying is: SSTfE., A bllllle make â€"a \\rlnkle, God bless that sort of wrinkle.‘ He should take an interest in the afâ€" fairs of his town, township, and Norâ€" thern Ontario as a whole. He should study the different problems pertainâ€" ing to municipal affairs, so that he will be able to use his influence in the right way. If a man considers all these things that I have mentioned and explained as good as possible, he will have a pretty fair idea of how he can fit himâ€" self to become a citizen of Northern Ontario. MEMBER FOR RIDING ON REDISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE. The ~committee of the Ontario House to consider the details of the proposed redistribution measure wi‘l include ten Government supporters, three Progressives and two Liberals. The member for this riding, Mr. Mac Lang, M.P.P., is one of the two Libâ€" erals appainted. It is understood now that the only new seats to be added will ‘be in Toronto, and perhaps, one in the North Land. The Jdatter will likely take care of the territory at the north and west section of this riding, though, of course, there nothing definite in this respect. / The casting vote of the Speaker, necessary for the first time in the hisâ€" tory of a Dominion parliament, saved the MacKenzie King Government from technical defeat in the House of SPEAKER‘S CASTING VOTE SAVES KING GOVERNMENT Commons last week. A motion reâ€" garding the rules of the House had been made by a private member. The Government declined to accept it and it was taken to a vote. The division was a party one, all the Government members voting in the negative, all Conservatives and all agrarians, with two exceptions voted in favor. The result was a dead heat. Speaker Lemieux then gave his casting vote. He voted with the Government, in the negative, and the motion was thus deafeated.
