made, with loss of time and satisfacâ€" tion, to earry on operations despite the weather. _ The season for roadâ€" work in this North Land is not any too long. An early start on the roads that are to be built or repaired is practically imperative. _ During the months that are past, the Governâ€" ment has had ample time and opporâ€" tunity to make decisions and arrangeâ€" ments regarding the roads necessary to be built or repaired. Everything should be ready so that as soon as weather â€" conditions permit, active operations may be commenced. This is the only practical and economical way. The Timmins Board of Trade, the Associated Boards of Trade, the Timmins Conservative Association and other North Land organizations have passed resolutions earnestly urging ‘‘an early start on road work in the North Land.‘‘ It is to be hoped that the present Government will follow the idea behind these resolutions. An early start on road work will be alike to the advantage of the country and the credit of the Government. In the House of Commons at Ottawa last week Mr. H. C, Hocken, one of the Toronto Members, while speaking on the budget, strongly advocated duties on the export of power ifrom Canada. â€"He also advocated impsoâ€" siticn of an emhbargo or export tax on the export of pulpwood, so as to develop the papermaking industry, as he phrased it. An export duty on pulpwood would ‘be O.K., perhaps, if it did not apply to pulpwood from the lands of settlers. _ Will the peop‘e who are advocating an embarâ€" go on pulpwood agree to exem,){ting the settler? If so, there will be little objection to their proposal, The setâ€" tler, howeve has to cut the pupwood to cglear his ‘zand. The pulpwood has tler, howeve has to cut the pulpwood to clear his ‘zand. The pulpwood has to be soid or wasted. It is simply a question of a fair price., Experiâ€" ence this year suggests that without United States competition the settlers will not get a fair price for their pulpâ€" wood. _ The question of conservation does not enter into the matter, as the pulpwood _ simply has to be ~cut to dlear the land. _ As for the establishâ€" ment of new pulp and paperâ€"making plants in Canada, why not wait until the Mettagami Pulp .Paper Co. has paid the settlers for the wood secured four vears ago?. In years past, it would appear that the Ontario Government authorities concerned have made a practice of so, wasting time in the early part of the season that road work in this North Land has never been carried through with the despatch and econâ€" omy that it might have been. _ The season is always so far advanced beâ€" fore actual work is undertaken on the roads that either work is suspended before completion on account of the weather conditions, or else attempt is C Messrs Ludford and Skelly have opened a new genergdl painting busiâ€" ness at 134 Spruce Street, South, and are prepared to furnish the very best in sign, auto, and house painting Interior decorating is to be a speciav'lt}:} TOO LATE FOR CLASSIFICATION.
