Frank Y. Uttley ROOM 2, GORDON BLOCK A discovery that would cause a reâ€" duction in the price of praducing a cubic foot of helium gas, from $15.00 to nine cents, is entitled to rank amongst the outstanding wonders of the present century. There are many achievements attributable to men who lived in Canada and were in the true sense Canadians. In addition to other great discoveries and accomplishments recently recorded in the press, the following originated in Canada :â€" THE FIRST ATLANTIC STEAMBOAT CALCIUM CARBIDE THE SUBMARINE CABLUE COMMERCIAL HELILUM THE TELEPHONE STANDARD THE ELBOTRIC RAILWAY MARQUIS WHEAT THE ELECTRIC STOVE THE SLEDPING CAR Many of the readers of The Advance do not know Canada‘s part in these achievements. Those who have some knowledge of them will appreciate this interesting series of articles, refreshing memory and adding to a just pride in this country and its potential wealth of brains, awbility and determination. This was brought about, in Canada, by the.Canadian, Professor John Cunâ€" ningâ€"<McLennan. It was a triumph of. ~ the muchâ€"discussed _ ‘‘pure science,‘‘ a term. which has been the greatest obstacle to the securing of large sums of money in this country for extensive scientific research work. Professor MeaLennan did not start in to seek a method that would result in the commercialization of helium gas, he was merely making as systematic an examination of the radio activity of the natural gases of Canada as the PROFESSOR JOHN CUNNINGâ€" HAM McLENNAN, whose brilliant researches attending from 1904 to 1918 gave helium to commerce, with a reduction in price from $15.00 to nine cents a cubic foot. limited funds at his disposal would alâ€" low. From 1904 he followed this work, with several other tasks. Each experiment was talbulated and duly reported, with ‘the result that wihen, in 1915, Sir Richard Threlfall sugâ€" gested to the British Admiralty the great advantages of using helium against hydrogen for airship purposes the eleven years‘ work of the Canaâ€" dian scientist, suddenly became of tremendous practical importance. THE PORCUPINE ADVANCE, TIMMINS, ONTARIO The Admiralty turned the suggestâ€" ion over to the Board of Invention and Research, and they inivited Proâ€" fessor MaLennan to prepare a report on the helium supplies within the Emâ€" pire, and to determine if they could be commercialized. At that time the combined sceientific laboratories of the world had not collected more than about seventyâ€"five cubic feet of this much sought after gas. Finding It In Canada ‘Prof. MdLennan and his staff went carefully over the records of that period ‘from 1904. The first fruits was the discovery that large supplies of helium waere available from the naâ€" tural gas fields of southern Alberta and an unknown quantity from the natural gas deposits which supplied the city of Hamilton, Ont. Some preâ€" liminary tests and a report were made with the result that early in 1917, the British Board advanced eonsxderable money to procééed alons the liney which had been suggested by Prof. McLennan.. A French chemical conâ€" cetn, with a branch at Toronto, loaned some costly equipment free of charge to facilitate the work, with the result that helium in consideraible quantities was oObtained from the Hamilton gas with a purity of 87 per cent. With the new knowledge gained at Hamilton the experimenters removed their plant to Calgary, Alberta. These gas fields supplied the city of Calgary and the equipment was installed, so that the gas sought after could be exâ€" tracted without interfering with this supply. The experimenters were enâ€" abled to extract about seven hundred cubic feet of helium from every half million feet of natural gas passed through their plant. Shipments of compressed heliuim commenced to apâ€" pear in Britain and its use for airâ€" ships proved up to and beyond all exâ€" pectations. A plant was projected to cost six hundred thousand dollars, with a yearly yield of almost eleven million cubic feet of helium. When the war ended immediateâ€"interest was lost in the discovery and at the time of writing there is little or nothing beâ€" ing done to develop this great natural asset. Developments on the Way Holwever the scientists of the United ‘States Pave succeeded in inâ€" ducing their government to adivance money for the development of helium from the natural gases of that counâ€" try. Waking advantage of the work done in Canada, by Canadians, they commenced in 1919 to extract helium in large quantities from the gas of Texas. Recently a sum of three milâ€" lion dollars has been granted by the United States Government to further this work. 1 It is probable that within the next few years wonderful uses wil} be found for this gas, aside from airship filling. It may greatly cheapen the trangmission of electrical power and revolutionize modern ideas of illuminâ€" ation from electric lamps, as well as aiding in the development of many other fields of human effort. In their anxiety they appealed to the Salvation Army and Capt. Cornthwaite asked the coâ€" operation of The Advance. Ae deâ€" scription was published of the missâ€" ing man together with the information that he had last written home from Apparently Haileybury is assured of the construction in that town at a comparatively early date of a ‘big new hotel structure. The new hotel will cost albout $100,000.00 and will be modern in every respect. It wili be ample for the immediate needs of ‘the town and will fill a public need very apparent since the fire of 1922. The site has not ‘been definitely decided upon as yet but there is general acâ€" céptance of the fact that arrangeâ€" ments are noiw practically completed in the matter of financing, ete. it is understood that Mr. Morin, of Sudâ€" bury, and a number of Haileybury men are réady to provide the necesâ€" sary capitai and have arraihged for an early start on the buildin‘g.
