Messrs. H. Laidlaw, G. A. D. Murâ€" ray,. D. Laprairie, S A. Caldbick, Councillor F. M. Wallingford, F. Byck, N. Ansara and Fire Chief Borâ€" land were asked by President T. F. King to speak on the question, and they responded briefly,. Mr. Wallingâ€" ford gave very hearty welcome to the! Fesserton people, and pointed out would be glad to see them establish their mdustry here. The question was all whether the proposed site would be a menace or not. Personally he did not . think under modern conditions that.a lumber business was a particuâ€" larly hazardous fire risk. He pointed out that other sites were available, if the company were willing to pay high for them.. He had had himself to pay, and pay more than its worth, for the site on which his own mill was located. He thono'ht the Fire Chief‘s opmion should be secured on the question of the fire menace. Chief Borland said that if the Fessertons had 3 to 8 milâ€" lion feet of lumber piled up on the ground as sug gested by Mr, Carter, the town‘s equipment would be inâ€" i (Continued from pace 1) the fact that all wanted to see the industry started here. The question was whether the proposed site would menace the town water supply, Perâ€" sonally he would be pleased to see the Fesserton‘s on another, location, but he did not think that the menace would be great if the provisions of the agreeâ€" ment were carried out. It would be necessary to bridge over the main, he mentioned. i WEDNESDAY. MAY 16th., 1923. (i. A. Macdonald suggested that the Board of Trade should consider careâ€" fully ‘before making any recommendâ€" ations in the matter, in view of the fact that those in charge of the waterâ€" works plant and responsible for its maintenance were convinced that the putting of the proposed lumber plant at the pumphouse grounds would be a menace. He also pointed out that the towns mentioned by Mr. Carter as having lumber industries centrally loâ€" cated had all been visited by disasâ€" trous fires, not necessarily starting in the lumber yards, but the lumber piles proving feeders for the flames and spreading the fire throughout the town. He thought the Board of Trade should follow up the idea suggested in Mr. Wallingford‘s address, and coâ€" operate with the Council in securing a suitable site for the Fesserton Lumber Co. without possibility of menace to the town water supply.. was not prepared to say that the proâ€" posed mill would be a menace if proâ€" per regulations were followed. â€" He did think, however, that the finding of the Underwriters should be the guide in the matter. If the Underwriters objected, the question could, ‘be conâ€" sidered as settled, and if they approvâ€" ed it would apparently be all right for the town ‘to go ahead with the proposâ€" al. . ndequate "to. oopewlth a ï¬rege t ‘pany. _ _ headway there. The President also mentioned reâ€" cen ing an anonymous letter suggestâ€" ing matters that might be taken up by the ‘Board of Trade. No attention could be taken to anonymous letters, he pointed out, and he suggested that those wishing the discussion of public matters should call attention to them in the proper way. «. . Omar Lamere was fined $10.00 and costs at Thursday‘s police court, the fine ‘being imposed on the charge of resisting arrest. ‘His troubles arose in the first place from his neglect to move on when Constable Gratton askâ€" ed him to do so. The police are makâ€" special effort to keen the sideâ€" walks clear for traffic and the public can assist in this by not blocking the walks by gathering at corners and other points in groups. The aowt.h' of the town and the heavy traffic nowâ€" adays on the streets and walks make it impossible to allow the gathering.of groups at corners and so on. Timmins is out of the country town class. The man in question did not realize this and he did not think he had to move on, or that the Constable could arrest him. He was proven wrong on all counts. Gco. Dileo, on the charge of illegally having liquor, was fined $200 and costs. R. Franchette, on the charge of keeping liquor for sale, paid $300.00 and costs. For driving an auto without lights a fine of $2.00 and costs was imposed on a local citizen, and a Schumacher automobilist also paid $1.00 and costs for breach of the trafâ€" fic byâ€"laws. The usual fine of $10.00 and costs each was imposed on one drunk and the same number of disorâ€" derly persons. ‘ % a * e The total expenditure this year for Tisdale Township.roads will be $26,â€" 000.00, half of this amount. being borne by the Government and half by the Township. ; The Arlie Marks Stock Company played to good houses both here and at South End and provided a clean bill of entertainment that pleased the crowds. They were two days in each place, being in Timmins Monday and Tuesday of this week, evenings and matinees. ‘The plays presented were of the usual Marks typ and were well received.
