It is understood that anwearly start is to ‘be made on the replacement of these buildings. ‘ The pians for the court house show that the new building will be considerably larger than the preâ€" vious one, provision ‘being made for the offices of the mining recorder, the division court clerk and others, which were not included in the old building. Although ever since shortly after the fire last Fall the town had the assurâ€" ance from the Provincial Government that all public buildings would .be reâ€" placed, people of Haileybury will be gratified to know that definite steps towards a start on this building proâ€" gram have been taken. With the reâ€" placement of the court house the, main section of the town will soon begin to take on its old appearance, and it will be a great help along educational lines to have new and upâ€"toâ€"date school buildings to replace the temporary ones now in use.‘‘ Assurance has ‘been given Haileyâ€" bury that the Government will remove the bush from the west side of the T. N. 0. tracks at Haileybury to protect the town from the bush fire menace, work to be started in.the imâ€" mediate future. ‘Wholesale Fruits, Vegetablbes, Confectionery, Tobaccos. 3/ Spruce St. 16,271.91 FRANK C. EVANS8, _ Maps and further information may 1,562.32|he obtained at the Department of DAN‘OB AT SCHUMACHBR . oN MONDAY, MAY 14th. â€" Recently there have been a number of weekly papers in Ontario go out of business because of the impossibility of profitably conducting journals in fields too limited. It was at one tims the rule for a town of two or three thousand to have two or more newsâ€" papers. Now a town as small as that is lucky if there is one newspaper to serve its needs. Changed conditions have resulted in a reversal of the oldâ€" time policy of starting a new paper on any excuse at all. ~ The tendency nowâ€" adays is to reduce the number of week ly newspapers. This tendency has been forced by circumstances and conâ€" ditions. It is a tendency that is resultâ€" ing in fewer but better newspapers. A. modern newspaper is a costly proposiâ€" tion. It used to be that a man with a couple of hundred dollars could ‘‘start a newspaper.‘‘ Nowadays even .a country weekly newspaper plant means an investment of around twenâ€" tyâ€" five thousand dollars. People with: that much money usually have more sense. Several recent amalgamations of country newspaper plants show that publishers are being forced by circumstances to give attention to the business aspects of improper compf-"’ r tition. Advertising is the main sourte of revenue for the country weekly just as it is of the city daily, and only a few of the larger towns can afford the duplication of advertising expenditure required by the publication of two newspapers covering the same field. One good newspaper, making sufficient revenue ho give firstâ€"olass service, is preferable to two newspapers splitâ€" ting the revenue and consequently unâ€" able to give as good a service as they would desire. the slightet provocation or without | ( ( ( | ! l The purchaser of a corner .lot must erect a building thereon costing gpt less than $1,000 within, eighteen: ‘months from the date of sale, and pur chasers of other lots nrust erect a building ‘costing not less ~thar $500 within the same period. TENDENCY OF COUNTRY , WEEKLIES TO AMALGAMATE One of the latest amalgamations caused by changed conditions is that of tlie two Renfrew, Ontario, newsâ€" papers. ‘The Renfrew Journal was amalgamated with the Renfrew Merâ€" cury on May lst and so henceforth there will be no more Renfrew Jourâ€" ral. <‘The Journal ‘has had a career covering around forty years of service to theâ€"public. The Mereury is still older, and usually has been the more influential paper of the two. The passâ€" ing of The Renfrew Journal will be much regretted by all who remember its ‘efforts to. build up the town, but the hard fact has to be accepted that toâ€"day in newspaper cireles business conditions all seem to be joining to force out unnecessary and unprofitâ€" able competition among newspapers in the ‘smaller towns. â€"Toâ€"day it is too costly a proceeding to support a newsâ€" paper that bhas not a sufficient field and a wide enougch source of revenue.
