At the annual meeting of the froâ€" quois Falls and District Board of Trade, the secretary‘s report showed the following noteworthy list of acâ€" complishments by the Board during the year past:â€"Agitation for a public library ; 24â€"hour telephone service; road to Monteith almost completed; other efforts in which much good was accomplished, though, perhaps, the particular object almed at was not obâ€" taimed. There are always new and striking suggestions for Xmas giving. ‘One of the outâ€"ofâ€"theâ€"ordinary â€" suggestions was made last week in advertising by the Hamilton B. Wills Co. ‘‘Give Standard Dividend Paying Stocks for Christmas,"‘ was the heading. That sort of a gift would be appreciated over and over again,â€"every time the dividends came along. A large pack of wolves is said to be roaming the bush in the Latchford dis trict. Two Latchford men have told of encountering the wolves one day reâ€" ecently. ‘The men were unarmed, but the wolves slunk away from the carâ€" cass of a deer they had killed and were devouring. The Town Council of Brockville, Ont., last week went on record as faâ€" vouring a Provincial levy, similar to the War Tax, for raising money for Northern Ontario Fire Relief. Severâ€" al other municipalities, inreluding Sudâ€" bury, have made the same suggestion. The annual Christmas Tree and Soâ€" gial Time for the children of the Presâ€" byterian church is ‘being held this (Wednesday) evening, and will unâ€" doubtedly be a pleasant and happy event for the children as in past years. A reader of The Advance suggests that this paper advocate the establishâ€" ment of a public library in Timmins. The Advance did that some many months ago, A byâ€"law was duly passâ€" ed in connection with the establishâ€" ment of a public library and other neâ€" cessary steps taken, but then the matâ€" ter seemed to drop from notice. It would ‘be a gcood thing if interest were revived in the matter of a public 11â€" brary for Timmins. Timmins merchants this year have unusually large stocks of seasonable merchandise, and the stores should be a pleasure to Christmas shoppers. Everybody should read the announceâ€" ments in this issue, see the fine winâ€" dow displays, and visit the stores where the big stocks are shown. A smal lboy in Timmins want to know how Adam and Eve could hang up their stockings on Christmas Eve., when they only had figâ€"leaves gowns. If this lad continues to worry himself in the same way when he grows up he will ‘be called a Tigher ‘Critic. Haileybury‘s fire engine, which saw active service on October 4th, for the first time in several years, and had to be abandoned on ‘Ferguson Ave. where it was ‘badly damaged during the height of the conflagration, is to ‘be repaired and put into commission again.
