The comâ€" petitions were conducted in the Timâ€" mins Public School on Friday afterâ€" noon commencing at three o‘clock. An hour and a half was allowed the conâ€" testants in each of the three essays. All the schools were very well repreâ€" The total number writing reached the striking total ef 109. For the prize for the best essay on ‘‘The Heroes of the Long Sault,"‘ there were 35 entries. All pupils of the schools up to the Entrance uiuss were eligitole for this contest. Essay Contest Inaugurated by Local I.O.D.E. Proves Very Populatr. OVER A HUNDRED PUPILS WROTE IN GOMPETITION For the prize for the best essay on ‘*‘The Natural Resources of Canada,"‘ there were no less than 67 contestants. This was for Entrance ‘Class pupils. For the prize for the best essay on ‘‘‘The Porcupine Camp,""‘ there were seven writing. This was for High School pupils. There will be a good prize awarded for the best essay in each of these three classes. The prizes will be atâ€" tractive volumes of Canadian books. The three winning essays will be puâ€" blished in ‘‘Echoes,‘‘ the I.O0.D:.:E. quarterly, which has a national cireuâ€" lation. The Advance will also publish the winning essays next year, and perâ€" haps also some of the others that may have especial merit. The essays on the Poreupine Camp should have especial interest. A number of local men have been selected to judge the essays and make award for the prize winner in each of the three subjects written upon. All the essays are numbered and are withâ€" out name or school or other identifyâ€" ing marks, so that the judges will feel perfectly free in marking the papers there being no way of knowing the writers of any of the essuys and the work thus being judged solely on merit. So far the judges have not started their work so it will be severâ€" al days before any decisions can be reached. These are quiet and easy times at the Timmins Police Court. It is the season of peace, joy and goodâ€"will all right, up to date. There were only a few cases last week before Magistrate Atkinson and none of them very seâ€" rious from the standpoint of law, howâ€" ever serious they might be to the parâ€" ties concerned. ‘Most of the few cases were for breaches of the building byâ€" law of the town. The defendants had neglected to comply with the proviâ€" sions of the byâ€"law regarding restricâ€" tions designed for protection against fire. Eight were fined $2.00 and costs each for breach of the byâ€"law. One whose offence was more objectionable than the others was fined $10.00 and costs. There was another casé reâ€" manded to this week. Chief Greer also says that there are several others who will appear for breach of the byâ€"law unless they make immediate <compliâ€" ance with the requirements.
