Monseigneur Latulipe, first Bishop of the Roman Cotholic Diocese of Haiâ€" leybury, died in Cobalt on Thursday evening last, Dec. 14th after a lengthy iliness. For some time past His Lordâ€" ahip had been in poor health. Some months ago it was neeessary for him to go to Montreal for special hospital treatment. At the time of the recent Central Temiskaming fire he was a patient at the Haileybury hospital and was one of the very last to leave that institution previous to its destruction by the fire. (The loss of the hospital and the Cathedral were serious blows to Bishop Latulipe. ‘Since the fire he has been eonstantly under the doeâ€" tor‘s eare. The late Bishop Elie Anicet Latulipe was the son of a farmer and was born at St. Anicet, Huntingdon County, Quebec Province, on August 3rd, 1859 He was educated at Montreal College and the (Grand Seminary of Montreal, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1885. His first curacy was that of the parish of St. Henri, Montreal. Later be was chaplain of convents in the Montreal district, and in 1894 he was appointed rector of the Cathedral paâ€" rish of Pembroke, remaining there for eleven years. In 1906 Father Latuâ€" lipe came to Haileybury to take charge of the work in this part of the North Land. A worker with energy and earnestness and an organizer of ability, suecess followed the efforts of Father Latulipe in the North as it had done in his other charges. In two years che had built a presbytery in Haileybury and chapels at Haileybury Cobalt, New Liskeard, Englehart and Latehford. In 1908 Father Latulipe ring heart trouble. Although he was known to be critically ill last week his death came suddenly and as a very seâ€" rious loss to the Diocese and to all who knew him. He was conscious unâ€" til a few minutes before he passed away. The tenure of office of Bishop Laâ€" tulipe saw great growth and progress not only to the eountry but to the Church he served with such zeal. In the Vicariate of Haileybury as it was in 1908 there were seven parishes, 14 priests, and about 15,000 members of the Churech. In the Diocese of Haiâ€" levyibury when Bishop Latulipe passed was named ‘Bishop of Catenna and Viear Apostolic of Temiskaming, beâ€" ing consecrated to these offices at Pem broke in November of that year. In ivio tuae Vicariate of Temiskaming was given the status of a diocese and Monseigneur Latulipe was made the first Bishop of the see at Haileybury March 28th, 1916.. Previous to the creation of the Diocese of Haileybury, the territory was under the jurisdieâ€" tion of the Diocese of Pembroke. In 1918 the northern part of the Diocese of Haileybury was erected into a sepâ€" arate Vicariate in charge of (Monâ€" seigneur Halle who established himâ€" self at Hearst on the Transcontinenâ€" tal. Previous to this division, Bishop Latulipe‘s charge extended to James Bay, and he made several trips to the far north, visiting the Indians and others under his charge in the disâ€" tricts north of Cochrane. south Porcupine, Ont. away, there were 46 ‘parishes, 63 priests and a membershipexceeding 40,000. New convents, hospitals and mphanave~ were built during his serâ€" vice in this district, and he showed himself always ardem; and untiring in his high office. His interest in the settlement and development of the North Land was also very keen and helpful. During Bishop Latulipe‘s reâ€" sidence at Haileybury the North Land made great strides forward in popuâ€" lation, settlement and general proâ€" gress, and all this meant a material increase in his work and care. Minâ€" ing camps sprung into existence at Poreupine, Kirkland Lake and other places; pulp and paper and lumber inâ€" dustries were established at various new places in the district; there was much new settlement of the agrieultuâ€" ral lands; and the extensions of railâ€" ways, etc., added to the general proâ€" gress and growth. So long as his health and strength permitted Monâ€" seigneur Latulipe was a regular visitâ€" or to all parts of his Diocese.. He paid Timmins more than one pastoral visit and was always affectionately welcomed here by the people of his Church. funeral of the late Bishop Laâ€" Instructions have been received from Toronto by the Northern Onâ€" tario Development Branch to lay out the extension of the Kirkland Lake Government (Road to Larder Lake, and the work is commencing at once. The Kirkland Lake!Swastika Board of Trade has raised funds for the purâ€" pose of cutting out this needed 1uvau and: have the work under way. The decision of the Government in the matter means that they will have the assistance of the Government finaneiâ€" ally and otherwise. tulipe will be held toâ€"day from St. Hiâ€" larion‘s church at Cobalt, the services commencing at 9 a.m. Interment will be made beneath the altar of St. Hilaâ€" rion‘s church. When the new Catheâ€" dral for the Diocese is erected, it is understood that the body of the First Bishop of Haileybury will be transferâ€" red to that sacred edifice. The remains lay in state in iSt. Hilarion‘s school until Sunday evening, when the body was taken to the chureh. A large numâ€" ber of the priests and people of the Diocese visited the school and the church to honour in death the First Bishop of Haileybury. FURNISHED SHACK TO RENT.
