Many in this Camp will be interestâ€" ed in the report appearing in outside papers to the effect that minority shareholders of the Thempson Powder Co. have decided to start action aâ€" gainst the directors who it is charged bave refused a reâ€"orgapization. worse on the part or a Government gress will be to suggest means and methods for future protection, rather than to provide material for charges and counter charges and useless areuâ€" building their businesses asked for a deferring‘ of the enquiry. â€" All ecan find sympathy with them in tms. They surely have their hands full enâ€" ough at this time, so far as demands on their energy are concerned. It is a pity that the enquiry could not have been left to a more conv@nient season for them. Promptness ot courâ€" se is one of the necéssary features of an enquiry, but the sessions at this time would necessarily be a great strain upon the Haileybury people. However, it is to be hoped that the final result of the enquiry still in proâ€" gress will be to suggest means and gerstill lingered. It is well to reâ€" member this fact for future use. However, howlinz at the Government about it is not hali as good an idea as to encourage the to such an interest and atteriion to the North Land that the bush menace will be reâ€" moved from the communities, up here so far as this is humanly possible. The people of Maileybury, harassed by their losses, worried by the anxiâ€" ties of seeking new homes and reâ€" So far the enquiry has developed the fact that the pressure at the Hailâ€" eybury pump station\ecouid have been increased about 350 per cent. on the day of the fire; that there should have been water even when the power failâ€" ed if the value at the reservoir had not been closed ; that fires were burnâ€" ing through the country for days beâ€" fore the disaster; that in some cases proper care had not (been taken in the setting of fires; that in some cases sufficient attention had not been given to fizhting bush fires; that some did not take the various fires in the disâ€" trict with sufficient seriousness,. All these things may be good things to know,. _ The knowing of them may bring good by suggesting ways to aâ€" vord danger in the future. But the overâ€"emphasis of these things is not what is needed. What is needed now is the emphasis of the fact that every means must be taken to avoid any fuâ€" ture disaster. Much has been made of the fact that the fire rangers were withdrawn in a dry season while danâ€" could have done more. Perhaps, the municipalities could have shown more carefulness and attention. Maybe, the settlers were thoughtless or reckless. But such theories will not bring back a single life lost nor repair a dollar‘s worth of damage. The idea should be to avoid a similar disaster by all possible means. To do this accusaâ€" tions and counter charges are lbest aâ€" vioded. _ No person, corporation or Government deliberately took action or neglected action with actual knowâ€" ledge or foresizht. _ Errors of judgâ€" ment or foresizht were no doubt reâ€" sponsible for the disaster, but little is gained and much lost by emphasizing gaine this. due one. TVernaps over the findin may be helpful it must be adn of ‘the enquiry little. _ There evidence seeme spirit of contradiction to this idea. Also the theory that the Government was primarily 1e.~,fiponalble has been em phasized because it has ‘been felt that there has been a tendeney to shouldâ€" er the responsibility upon the settlers and the municipalities. All this is of little poses could due to negiect on the | ous municipalities.
