Carried Personal Mail. hours being taken up on the trip alâ€" though a stop was made at North Bay for dinner and to ship supplies, etc., As the stop at North Bay made more than an hour‘s time, the time for the flight may be set down as five hours from Ottawa to Hafleybury. From Ottawa the course of the Ottaws River was followed to Mattawa. From Mattawa a direct route was taken to North Bay. Leaving North Bay the sea plane went again to ‘Mattawa, following the Ottawa River to the Kippawa, Lake Temiswaming, etc., eventually landing at Haileybury. The sea plane party includes Mr. Clyde Leavitt, chief Forester of the Commission of ‘Conservation; Dr. J.! M. Swaine, Chief of the Division of Forest Insects, Entomological Branch, Dapartment of Agriculture, Ottawa ; working with Moessrs. Capt. P. Wickâ€" ens, Roland D. Craig and Major G. H. Edzecombe, of the Commission of Con servation, who have been studying the fores{s in the North Land for some time. â€" The ‘Commission of Conseryâ€" ation is conducting a survey of th forest resoureces of Ontario, with a view to finding out the present and. possible future supplies of timber from which the pup and lumber inâ€" dustries of the province can he supâ€" plied. This work is under the direcâ€" tion of Mr. Roland D. Craig who conâ€" ducted a similar survey in British Columbia. (Major Edgecombe and Mr. A. V. Gilbert are also engaged in colâ€" lecting the necessary information for this survey. The sea plane is expectâ€" ed to tbe of particular helpfulness in the work. Dr. Swaine is making a special study of the injury caused by the spruce budworm which is spreadâ€" ing from Northern Quebece forests into the North Land of Ontario. The inâ€" jury is to the balsam and spruce timâ€" ber and is caused by myriads of caterâ€" pillars devouring th@ foliage. The inâ€" jured trees turn red and may easily :be distinguished from the air. It as planned to map the infested area, and the timber owners can then be advised of the rate and direction of the spread so that they may salva‘ge their timber in advance of the outbreak. In addition to the baggage carried in the sea plane there was mail matter for Capt. Wickens and Mr. ‘Craig, the first to come to the North Land from Ottawa by sea plane. The Government sea plane has a 12â€"cylinder ‘*V * type 330 horse powâ€" er Liberty motor, and can travel at the rate of 75 miles per hour. The machine is equipped with tanks that will hold 100 ke{Tons of ; gasoline, which will last about 4 hours flying, as the amount of gasoline used per hour in flying is 28 gallons. The visit of the sea plane to the North Land will create much interest. It is to be hoped it will do much more, â€"that data and information gathered through its use will be of benefit and advantage to the whole North Land. The affairs of the New Ontario Colonization Company whose land is in the Clay Belt, Cochrane district, were before the Riddellâ€"Latchford Commission at Toronto last week. In 1912 Mr. W. K. Jackson, of Buffalo, (after whom Jacksonboro is named) secured from the Hearst Government two townships on the understanding that within two years at least 2400 acres would be prepared for settleâ€" ment, houses and barns built, and at least 16 bona fide settlers be brought in each year for tiree years. The evidence went to show that from 1912 to 1920 only 20 settlers had been settlâ€" ed on the land for any length of time and that only seven were on the land now. Only 250 acres had been clearâ€" ed and settled. The war had been one of the drawbacks to the plans of SETTLERS WOULD NOT STAY ON LAND IN NORTH. 1€ THY+», »pOLCUPINE ADVANOERE racilitâ€" out of 4J Windsor. The former had carried on the negatiations with the Government. Later he disposed of his interest for $17,000. ‘Wigle also dropped out, and Jackson, with Mr. Tyndall, took over the contract. After conferences with the Government the New Ontario Colo nization â€" Company, which has been carrying on since then, was organized. Mr. Jackson said the Company had endeavoured to live up to its contract. He said the Company now had 89 conâ€" tracts with prospective settlers. He said the Company had not made any money. â€" Only two dividends had been paid on the preferred stock and none on tlie common stock. The clearing of the land had been carried on, desâ€" pite the lack of settlers. There had ben 19,000 cords of pulpwood, 32,000, 000 feet of lumber and 10,000,000 feet of logs cut and sold.
